2020.11.28 03:20 signuper My notes about optimizing G14

I bought G14 several weeks ago, and generally is satisfied with it, but there does exist some annoying problems. I finally resolved most of them and would like to take a note and share with you guys.

My model is GA401IV (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-zephyrus-g14-14-gaming-laptop-amd-ryzen-9-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060-max-q-1tb-ssd-moonlight-white/6403816.p?skuId=6403816). One thing to notice is that this model doesn't use Intel 660p SSD, instead it uses WD SSD, I guess this is some kind of upgrade. Maybe only newly produced ones use WD SSD.

1 Install/update drivers via MyASUS to make sure everything is up to date.

2 Fan control
the default Silent fan mode of G14 is still too loud for me, especially compared with MacBook series. Now ARMOURY CRATE allows you to adjust the fan speed curve in manual mode, but it has two problems: a. it doesn't allow you to use manual fan speed curve while using battery; b. if setting the fan speed too low in the fan curve (such as 1%), the fan keeps spinning up and down for almost every 4 seconds, which could be quite annoying.
According to [1] and [2], and all I care about is to adjust fan speed, so I just uninstalled ARMOURY CRATE and use atrofac instead. And this also allows me to keep the customized fan mode even when I'm using battery, because ARMOURY CRATE Service forces the system to change fan mode when using battery. If you don't want to uninstall ARMOURY CRATE, you can just stop ARMOURY CRATE Service before unplugging to keep the fan mode unchanged.
Currently I didn't find a good solution for the fan spinning up and down after setting to low fan speed. But I do have a workaround: try putting it into sleep mode by pressing the power button(closing the lid doesn't work well) and wake it up for a few times, it generally should fix it, normally I only need to put it into sleep mode once to make it work.

3 Coil whine
The root cause of coil whine is still not clear, and no solution is provided by ASUS, But there exists a workaround: turn on the keyboard backlight and set it to the highest level. (I forgot where I read about this, but I think it's from one of the posts here)
In order to prevent the system from turning keyboard backlight off automatically, I changed the Registry as presented below:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ASUS\ASUS System Control Interface\AsusOptimization\ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys set TurnOffKeybdLight to a big value (timeout in seconds)
Then restart "ASUS Optimization" service to make it take effect immediately.

4 Clean the bloatwares from ASUS
According to [2], I stopped and disabled services starting with "ASUS" except "ASUS Optimization".
I also uninstalled softwares related to "ROG Live Service", "Lighting Service", "RefreshRateService" because I thought they're no use for me.

5 Mitigate battery drain by AMD Radeon Settings
According to [3][4], instead of uninstalling AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin (2020-20.11.2) to fully resolve it, I kept the software just in case I need to configure AMD Graphics sometime. And I disabled the auto-start tasks of AMD Radeon:
open the Task Scheduler and disable the "StartCN" and "StartDVR" tasks
After restart, I didn't see the power draw from Nvidia GPU in idle anymore.

So far, my G14 is working well, but all the effort in order to make it work properly is still frustrating, and the quality of built-in softwares from ASUS is just terrible. I can't believe ASUS just put those craps in the products without testing sufficiently. It feels like the customers paid a lot just to be recruited as QAs for their products. If there are any other problems raising up, I'll definitely return it.

2020.11.28 00:20 tjaylea I'm a Pathologist who performs autopsies on nightmares. This autopsy talked back.

Death is a taboo topic for so many of us. Something we shy away from, beat it over the head with a stick and scream at it to go sit in the corner until we’re ready to deal with it. It permeates every aspect of our daily lives without us often even registering it, yet we still run from it.
Because despite our various faiths, practices and beliefs; we don’t truly know what is beyond this existence. And that’s terrifying for so many.
Not for me, though. For me, it’s just work. Over here at Death May Die, we have a system that has remained unchanged for all the years I’ve worked here. It’s one I will apply to every entry in my strange life that I share with you.
Every 3 days, a new body winds up at my morgue with its own story about how it got there.
Every 3 days, I'll report back to you all with what I find.
Some corpses are contorted, misshapen from the decomposition, rotted or burning. Yes, still burning when I finally dump them on the cold table. Ritual deaths are tricky and require big rubbery gloves. Mine have a few fun stickers from the local music scene, gotta represent.
But they all have one thing in common;
Every single one of them is a product of nightmares. Literally and figuratively.
Now I’ll say here for those of you already rolling your eyes so hard they’re already prepping to become billiard balls; I’m not expecting you to start up petitions for nightmare integration or to start on your creature feature dating sim. It is not my job to convince you. Sturgeon is a weird fuckin’ place.
I’ll lay it all out now; Sturgeon has a serious nightmare problem on its hands. We all know they walk where we dare not tread and the folks like it that way. Unless you’ve been sentenced for crimes that shall go unmentioned or it’s near the end of their life, you are never likely to meet any of their various ilk.
A barrier separates Sturgeon’s denizens or “Daywalkers” from those who inhabit the darkest corners of our fears and those who came long before we stepped out of our caves. Cryptids, Nightmares, Beasts and so forth. They have their own histories, legends, infirmities, fears and flaws. Most importantly; they all die. That means someone must tend to them, set their bodies right and perform whatever practice they held dear to them.
Being the only mortician that is willing to cater to their final rites, it falls to yours truly; Fala McNamara, to do what needs to be done and provide them with their last rites, maybe learning something about them along the way.
With the latest iteration in the Tournament of Nightmares now over, my business has been… busy, to say the least. Bodies coming in covered in cuts, limbs totally eviscerated and organs simply gone. They love to keep a girl busy, that’s for sure.
But that’s not why we’re here today.
We’re here today because of the nightmare of the forests that was hauled in last week.
And what was inside of him.
-
I always hated early morning calls. Let it be known that Dr. Fala McNamara is not a fucking morning person. Not in a cute “don’t talk to me until I’ve had my coffee!” type of way, either. Miss me with that bullshit, I enjoy the quietness of night where the sun cannot expose my exhausted face and dishevelled frame like the judgmental bitch he is. Makes me love the Winter all the more.
As my bones rattled in the early morning chill, my mind wandered to a familiar question; Was med school really worth it? To become Sturgeon’s sole nightmare pathologist AND mortician? Looks borderline comical on a resume. Well, not like I could quit now…
Hobbling downstairs from my apartment, Khali hands me a glass of something with a cheery grin and nervous hands.
“Mornin’ chief! Sorry to get you up so early, our next client wasn’t scheduled until after dinner, but you know how it is… I hope you’re not mad?” They fumbled with their hands and flinched as I took a sip before nodding at nothing and rushing to clean the reception counter. Khali was sweet, more nervous than a shelter animal meeting a foster owner and easily the most alive thing in this entire building. They were good at their job, though, and always thinking of new ways to bring efficiency to the business, so I would always tread lightly when they had a nervous spell.
“You know you don’t need to call me chief. Morgues just have Morticians. Don’t worry about the early start, I’ll nap after. The hell did you give me, though?” I feel the kick in the back of my throat and my eyes widen, my feet feel lighter. Khali shouts back as they go to answer the door.
“Mellified Man! Vendor told me it’ll wake anyone up pretty damn quick, enjoy it, chief!”
I was halfway through a mixture of confusion and anger when the door opened and a burly man towering over us both sauntered in, a friendly smile over his face as a cold snap hit me and I rushed for the nearest coat or blanket.
“Hey, hey! Khali you little scoundrel, thanks so much for opening up. Wouldn’t have called if we could’ve waited, but uhh…” He turned his head back outside and waved for his subordinates to wheel in the body. “This one was special. Figured you’d appreciate it when you saw.”
The man standing in my funeral home was Detective Chino De La Sturgeon, head of the L & M Nightmare Detective’s establishment that handled relations and issues between the two groups. Cavalier, fiercely loyal and, at times, tactless. He was a reliable colleague and the sort of guy you could rely on in a pinch, even if…
“Oh GOD Chino, what is that under your fingernails?!” Khali recoiled as he went in for a hug before looking down at his hands, bemusement written across his face.
“This? Ah, it’s just corpse pieces, stiff got a little uhh.. “mulchy” when moving him, but you’re not gonna let that stop a refreshing morning hug, are ya?” He grinned and let out a bellow as Khali jumped over the counter to spray themselves down, repeatedly muttering “nope,” under their breath.
“If you’re done terrifying my staff, shall we get down to business? I’ve suddenly found my morning zest and I wanna get this started before I find myself passing out with a hacksaw in my hands. I don’t need another Christmas party incident.” I walked down with my arms still draping a nearby blanket around me like a makeshift cape; hardly professional, but Chino was a friend. He nodded and shook my hand as we escorted the body to the main room.
The building was built in such a way that accommodated both the funeral and more grisly research aspects; The greeting room Khali handled was small and dignified on the street level, portraits of animals in admiralty uniforms and nightmare creatures or Cryptids looking peaceful in their caskets or atop funeral pyres were also commonplace and brought a sense of peace to those with families that sought us out.
I’m not going to go cliche and postulate the notion that “what if HUMANS are the monsters?” because that would imply absolutism and to be frank; it’s fucking stupid. But if it exists; it has kin and those kin need closure. I provide that first in the reception area and the bulk of my preparation in “the chamber” that is situated behind and below. It is an area the size of a small warehouse, fitted with lockers of all shapes and sizes for all manner of creatures, a workstation with a speaker attached for both music and communications from the front desk, a slew of my own personal oddities in jars, antique collections for both enjoyment and ritualistic purposes.
A small alcove in the corner was dedicated specifically to what I called the meeting room. It housed my taxidermy animals from my earlier medical days and my council of spiders a dear friend had gifted to me some time ago. The council were superb soundboards for particular queries, concerns, or general advice I needed. Two dozen spiders ranging from the polarising Madame Rumble (Aphonopelma chalcodes) to the always comical Duke Strassburg (Theraposa Blondi) and last but not least; my near-constant companion jumping spider (Phiddipus Audax) Minerva with her blue striped and iridescent abdomen, piercing eyes and constant desire to nest in my hair. They all provide excellent advice in exchange for good feeds and decent space.
It was my own personal safe haven from the world above. Where the main companions I kept were either solitary like me or unable to respond at all. Immediately I felt the safety blanket envelop me and I got to work observing the basics of our new resident;
The body was seven foot, nine inches and weighed 272 pounds. An XL tray accommodated him decently, and the smell of burnt wood and moss filled my nostrils.
As soon as Chino unzipped the bag and the deer skull popped out, antlers mid-shed and the right stalk snapped in half, I knew what I was looking at. Folks called them many things; lords of the woods, forest devil, the woodsman and even master protector.
But whether he was revered or vilified, he was respected under one unifying name across the western world;
Leshii.
-
I gathered the tools and studied my grimoire for the area depicting forest beings, their anatomies, and their burial practices. “Mister Woodenhuser’s Guide To the Mythically Dead and Magically Charmed: a One Stop Guide For Every Ritual and Anatomical Blunder” I found the damn thing in a yard sale when I was six, it’d never steered me wrong before, even if the name was a fucking eyesore. Flicking through the thick and yellowing pages, I found the section on woodland beasts and how to both conjure them and bury them.
This was going to be rough.
Since he was found with no next of kin available, it’d fall to me to send the body off after I was finished finding out what happened to him. Joys of being both coroner and mortician, hoping nobody came to claim him in case we fucked it up. While I rummaged for the right tools, Chino told me what happened;
“It was nine minutes past six in the morning when we found him. His body was hanging by the ankles from opposite sides of a tall gate bordering on the Williams’ Estate. Shit was nasty… I think some passers-by spotted him, but they damn sure didn’t say anything.” He shook his head and sighed, running his hand across his five o’clock shadow and an incessant scratching noise echoing around my sanctum that set my own hairs on end.
“Chino… we talked about the noises, remember? We had a whole discussion about how they make me feel.” I felt my teeth grinding as he put his hands up and walked back.
“I don’t recall a talk, just you screaming to get out with a scalpel to hand.” He smirked wryly. “You mentioned something about castration and I promptly left.”
“Then you know not to make the mistake again, don’t you? Was there anything else? Or can I unwrap my present before this mellified man turns me inside out?” I wheeled myself over to the table and began unwrapping the Leshen from his plastic bag, laying out the tools I’d need for the procedure.
“Nah, nothing else. I’ll go grab a coffee with Khali, but uhh… Fala? Do you ever think about your future?” I looked up, and he was leaning against the door, arms folded and concern on his face like a big brother or a father figure ready to give the lecture of a lifetime. “I mean, y’know, beyond this place?”
“Get hotter. Get older. Learn more. Die. Feed the ground. Become particles and travel unconsciously. All pretty standard to me. Why?” I thumbed the pages of my book and looked at where I’d need to start, most likely the chest cavity, figures. But should I crack the ribs first or cut it open and see what happens?
“Don’t you want a family? Maybe someone to do this with you? Someone to come home to?” His voice dropped an octave. “I worry about you here. Five years I’ve worked with you and never seen you with anyone. Well, not since…” He let the moment hang in the air like some mistletoe I was expected to saunter under, but I gestured around me without looking up.
“There’s over 200 bodies in here, each of them with their own stories, loves, fears, hates and passions unfulfilled. I’m with them every day, they’re just as much my friends as you are.” I shook my head and gave him a blank expression, hoping the message would sink in. “Everything else is just white noise. I like it that way.”
From the council in the corner I could hear murmurings of agreement and phrases such as “Solitary hunters are kin too.” and “You truly WILL be on your own if my mealworm is late, child.” I chuckled and when Chino met my gaze, he shuddered.
“Alright, alright. When you start talking to The Council, I get unsettled, so that’s my cue to bounce. I’ll be upstairs so just call me when you have anything, I believe in you chief!” I couldn’t even retort before he chuckled and headed back up to the reception, the thick steel door slow to close and Chino’s voice booming out with a triumphant “Hey, Khali! Wanna see what partial spontaneous combustion looks like? Little demons really have no control, so the first thing to sizzle is their-” while Khali screamed their goddamn lungs out in protest. It was like having two grown-up, hairy children.
Nevermind, distractions are removed. Time for work. I put my dictaphone on play and left it on the side table as I slipped on my apron and began walking around the body.
Patient #621b - A Leshii. Male. Middle-late aged, most likely in their late 500’s. The thick black chains at the joints were seared his green, moss covered flesh. The branches and foliage that adorned his body had been pruned, ripped out or cauterised. Not a single leaf was spared, every edge was furled in plastic. Over his head was a thick bag with a hose attached to a car exhaust, still running when discovered by passers-by. A black substance oozing from the sides of his mouth, ears and eyes. Cause of death…
Look,. I don’t think I need to tell you that you can’t suffocate a plant, but you can certainly put it to sleep with enough deprivation. Some sick bastard decided to let the poison do its work while our Leshii was in a barely conscious state and unable to fight back.
Leshiis come in all shapes and sizes; some are able to adopt the visage of tall humans when they’re still powerful, but many lose their abilities as they get older, instead looking similar to towering trees with oak limbs, a broad face with thick antlers forming a small crown. Regardless, they are revered all around the world as defenders of the forests, sometimes even violently if they feel they or their kin are threatened. I once dealt with a scorched female Leshii who had tried one too many times to reason with deforestation workers in a small Slavic town. They thought her a demonic entity and “cleansed her” with fire. Her son looked upon me with bright, amber eyes and told me every tree would know of what she had done.
This particular one was still in his armour when he died, the deer skull still affixed over his head, defensive abrasions across his forearms and legs. Clearly trying to defend himself against something but ill-equipped to do so.
Nothing more for it, I suppose. I picked up the scalpel to make the Y incision. For those of you morbidly inclined; it starts on the shoulder, running to the lower end of the sternum and then downwards in a straight line over the abdomen to the pubis. Cutting through with some degree of effort, noxious fumes rising up out of the cavity, I set the scalpel down and gripped both sides of the incision on the shoulders and pulled.
When I let go and looked down, I had to stifle a scream as I backed away to the safety of my meeting corner, the council of spiders all crawling out of their burrows to either console me or get a better look.
“Is it food? We would appreciate food, very much so, yes.”
“Is the chairwoman well? We do not wish to lose our primary feeder.” My chest tightened and my legs shook, I was used to all manner of oddities when dealing with these kinds of creatures. But to imply I was desensitised to the unusual would betray the human elements I still harbour within me.
Taking small, tentative steps back to the operating table, I pulled the movable desk around and craned the light down over the section where his organs should be. Strange, green and filled of fauna they would be, yes, but the grimoire was never wrong.
Instead, I was staring down at a sprawling, densely packed city running from pubis to clavicle, the spires on top of houses and municipal buildings jutting up to just beneath the last layer of skin the Leshii had, their black brick design reminiscent of Victorian era housing, but with an immediately far more uncomfortable atmosphere surrounding them. I peered down and saw small creatures cavorting in long flowing robes, their faces hidden and only small spindly appendages coming out where hands should be. Some spoke openly on the streets, others were ferrying large carts of foods, pieces of the Leshii’s organs, from one place to another. I saw small picnic tables where these things gleefully tore pieces off of the Leshii’s flesh, spewing a viscous black liquid around their dwelling and pasting it to the walls.
Wherever the black liquid touched, the internal walls would start to grow a vile mould that sizzled as it spread.
In the centre of this strange, macabre town, lay a pedestal atop a series of brilliant marble steps. A pair of statues depicting two figures in black robes and painted skulls for heads gripped a pair of obsidian shovels with pride, standing on either side of a pyre that connected to a thick black pipe. A larger cloaked individual stood in front of a crowd, speaking impassionately in a language I couldn’t understand, but his hand signals and accompanying imagery certainly explained his agenda.
Sacrifice.
I could do nothing but watch as a small, screeching individual was brought forcibly by members of the crowd, now chanting eagerly as the poor soul was thrown at the preacher’s feet, struggling to get up and staring around for help from someone… anyone.
But nobody came to their aid. They simply pointed to the pyre.
The dark flame was lit and I swear my own operating light flickered, I was enraptured in the worst of ways as they shoved this person onto the fire and sang a chorus. The hood fell down, and I felt my eyes widen in an even greater fear. That of inaction.
It was a little girl, by all accounts human and with only small deformities that were transfiguring her hands into the same spindly limbs her contemporaries had. She begged for clemency, for help. In any language, that’s universal.
Eventually, her resistances ceased, and the body fell limp over the pyre before being pulled into the black pipe. A guttural whooshing sound filled the body as it travelled up through the city and past the throat of the Leshii.
I was at a loss for words. No amount of medical training or living in this town prepared me for this. I furtively glanced down at the Grimoire and hoped for some information. Unfortunately, little sentient towns living inside woodland beasts were not among their vast swathes of knowledge. Goddamnit.
In a flash, the bulb on my light fixture burst and shards of glass rained down on my head, plunging me into an imposing darkness. I cursed, but remained thankful I had a surgical cap covering my black hair.
A light erupted from the body, a horrific & forbidden colour that I was never meant to see; that no person should ever gaze upon. Minerva, my jumping spider, crawled out of my chest pocket to perch herself on the top & stared intently at the sickening hue, her little pedipalps shaking.
Casting my eyes up & away from the glow, I saw something that days on is still haunting me.
The Leshii was awake.
His eyes glowed a strong Amber, and the jaw encased inside his deer skull grew slack, as if accommodating a great weight trying to pry itself free from his gullet.
Then, he spoke.
A booming voice that bounced around the walls of my building, growing in ferocity and power as the observation windows above threatened to shatter & my ears rang, my skull splitting.
“I see a place housing the dead. A realm where the barrier is broken down and all that remains is flesh & unresolved business.” His head jerked and snapped, the deer skull following me as I moved, desperately trying to get out of his purview. “I see shadowy figures taking this vessel and putting it to work for their greater purpose. I see… I see…”
The voice grew discordant, manic even as the body regained life and it too began to jerk and thrash.
“I see Sturgeon bathed in twilight, the unliving standing tall on the bodies of the greeter and the keeper. The dead will come to greet the living and all secrets will go to the grave. I see all things unravel, an endless spiral of decay and death. Fractals upon fractals.”
Something began to manifest in the back of the room, arms gripping either side of the near 100ft wide span and propping itself up as it took shape. A blackened, featureless representation of the corpse laying in front of me, still bleating out unhallowed prophetic drivel as my nose started to bleed.
“The Orders will clash and brothers will spill their blood in the place with no name. The devourer of sins will be brought to her knees and there will be no more spaces in between. All will converge under the light of the dusk walkers before falling silent.”
My vision was swirling, and this shape started crawling towards me, featureless save for a hungry, gaping maw of a mouth, locked in a static expression of apathy that set me more on edge than any wide smile or angry grimace ever could. I backed up into my corner with the council, but there was no room left to maneuver. I didn’t even notice Chino bringing down an axe on the throat of the corpse, severing the head from the body in one swift motion. The splitting of wood and the screeching of so many living things at once put me in the fetal position as it ripped through the room. After a few seconds, I looked up and saw Chino covered in sweat and staring at the spot where he’d made the strike. Mustering up what little courage I had, I got to shaky legs and walked over, Minerva cowering in my pocket. The spectre from the back was gone, a thick cloud of ash hung in the air where it had reached out, some 10 feet away from grabbing me.
The Leshii’s eyes still shimmered and the deer skull started cracking, the twitching less pronounced. Eyes shifted from Chino to me before fixating on a spot above us and espousing one final proclamation;
“In time, all the stars will go out. One by one. And we will remember.” With that, the light faded and a thick pungent smoke left the mouth, making me gag at the first whiff. Adjusting my mask and exchanging a look with Chino, I stared back down at the city of creatures in the chest cavity.
Every single one of them was staring at us. Red eyes like fireballs glistened behind dark hoods. Smaller children hid behind their parents and frail members shook with fear, but the rest simply looked at us as a threat.
A single voice rang out from the town hall, a small shovel in his hand that he brandished with authority and they turned their backs to us, some shutting themselves in their homes while others huddled together. The two statues glowed bright as black smoke running through the town and enveloping the entire town until nothing but the spires were visible.
When the smoke cleared, only the cloaks remained.
Every single one of them had vanished, and now only the empty city remains.
“I’m guessing this is not what you usually find in a forest lord, huh?” Chino remarked, breathing heavily and letting the axe drop with a thud, wiping his brow. “Any ideas?” I didn’t immediately reply, the fear of my own mortality still sending shock waves through me. Though I am for the most part at peace with my calling and the idea of death, there’s something to be said for not going out on your own terms and the terrifying idea of being here one moment and gone the next. I just about avoided making a fool of myself and passing out by clutching the edges of the steel table and letting my breathing slow.
“No. No, that’s not normal for a fucking forest lord, Chino. Flowers, moss, bugs, even small pure water deposits where the bladder should be. THOSE are normal. An entire city of little people complete with still alive corpse? Yeah, fuck that. Fuck that right in the ear. Jesus christ…” I pinched my nose and took a breath, thankful the man in front of me understood my hot-blooded nature and lack of social decorum. “I need to finish the job, hand me the circular saw, would you?”
He blinked in surprise before obliging and taking a step back. “You’re not even going to take a break? Seriously? Nobody would blame you, y’know.” He frowned as I grabbed it with shaking hands, gripping the handle tightly to steel my nerves, taking my mind back to the lessons I’d learned over the years and finding my footing once again. I would not let this beat me.
“I’m here. I’m alive. I’m well enough to continue. Plus, for his burial ritual, we need to be done by first light in some 90 minutes, so less chattering and more skull scattering.” The deer mask now crumpled away and the frightened but definitively dead face of the Leshii staring blankly up at us, his hazel eyes, humanoid mouth and thick nostrils caked in the black substance that had spewed from the town in his chest. Some kind of poison. I scooped a portion up from the saliva, ocular, nasal and what remained of the bladder to put it into a vial for toxicology testing. Whoever did this had wanted him unconscious with the plastic wrapping and ensured maximum suffering upon waking up. Poor bastard…
First making a triangular incision on the top of the scalp, stretching from one ear to the other and ending at the crown, I used the saw to cut through the bone and protect the soft tissue, not wanting to cause any more of a mess than what already existed.
When putting the circular saw down, however, I noticed a brand on the back of the Leshii’s neck, just above the vertebrae and still clearly visible in spite of the clean cut Chino had made. I scanned my Grimoire fervently in the hours following this and came to find a match for what I saw;
It was a circular sigil with three distinct rings. In the centre lay the earth, rings running out, and each circle means something new. The central circle represents death, next life, outermost birth. The skin peeled off the middle circle, making it abundantly clear that this was no ordinary murder; it was a message.
Instead of finding a brain, however, I found something far more disturbing. Something that would ultimately set me on the path I find myself on now.
In the place of any kind of brain was a mass grave of the creatures in the Leshii’s chest cavity. So many of them were malformed, frozen in agony and charred. Thousands of them spilling out onto the table and disintegrating the moment they came into contact with the steel.
I marked the cause of death as poisoning and a homicide. Unable to remove any of the now ruined city from his body, we instead sewed him up and prepared for the ritual.
A Leshii is tied to the forests they inhabited, and while they have physical forms with lifespans, they are more spiritual than we could ever imagine. Their births, lives and deaths are indicative of that. A new Leshii is born every five years on the 20th of March, the dawn of the spring solstice, and a Leshii must be buried before the Winter solstice on the 21st of December, lest they spend months wandering and causing decay in their own dwellings.
With only an hour to spare, we ferried his body to the edge of the Sturgeon Old Forest and a hole in the ground hastily dug by Chino’s subordinates. No embalming, no headstone, no chemicals, just the soil. As we lowered him in, the sunlight crept over the horizon and the last rites were given. When the sun touched his body, a soft flame started at his feet and worked its way over his body. As we piled the soil over him, flowers sprouted out of the ground and within moments had covered the spot in its entirety with wildflowers, rhododendrons and a single Lily.
“Your son has been returned to you, a new guardian, to watch over your lands. Let him bask in your light and grow anew. From the soil, we return.”
Chino and I hung our heads as the light finished covering the gravestone and made sure not to look upon the source of the rustling in the trees, the crunching of leaves or the scuttling in the bushes. Our respect was necessary, not our eyes. After a couple of minutes and a soft breeze whisked through the air, we knew we were done.
As we left, I could’ve sworn I saw a pair of thick, spiked antlers jutting out from behind a treeline some distance away.
Perhaps a family member watching from afar.
Perhaps this Leshii found his way home.

During our walk back, it became clear there was going to be a lot of red tape and work to be done. I resolved to write up my report and work with Chino on anything he needed. Whatever this was, no matter how horrifying, I would send myself to an early grave with stress if I didn’t see this through. He told me things would be fine. I could tell he was lying.
As we got to the front desk and began our goodbyes, Khali burst out in a fluster, covered in the leftovers of our Leshii from downstairs. I always felt guilty for making them do cleanup, but it was this or feeding the council and I don’t think Khali is prepared for what they’d say to them just yet.
“Chief, you got a letter, I think… I think you may wanna open it.” They clasped it in filthy, shaking hands. I raised an eyebrow.
“You shaking because of the gunk? I know you’re particular about the messes, but…” I trailed off when I looked into their eyes; darting for a safe place to decompress. I shook my head. “Go clean up and get a coffee. We’ve got this.”
Khali bowed and ran for the bathroom with such speed I didn’t think was possible. Running my hands over the envelope, I felt the fine paper and my name embossed in perfect white cursive against the charcoal backdrop. As if it were calling to me.
Inside, the note was simple and to the point, written in a thick green liquid. The blood of the Leshii. Making my own run cold as my eyes scanned the warning;
“More will come.Memento Mori.”
A sigil scrawled beneath it, the exact same brand I’d seen on the Leshii’s body, but with the flesh covering the patch that was missing from his corpse. Two shovels intersecting in front of a painted skull. A name etched around the sigil in golden writing.
”The Order Of The Gravediggers.”

2020.11.27 21:03 dmaitland The Coronavirus Vaccine

Researchers around the world have wasted no time in the race to find a vaccine to combat COVID-19. Months into the pandemic, several vaccine candidates are in late-stage clinical trials to test how well they protect people from a coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection. And experts predict that by the end of 2020 or early in 2021, a safe and effective option will emerge.
“This is the scientific world working at warp speed,” Barry Bloom, a professor of immunology and infectious diseases and former dean at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said in a Sept. 15 webinar.
Beyond the development of the medicine itself, efforts to speed up vaccine manufacturing and distribution are also in place. Here’s a look at the coronavirus vaccine prospects and the progress being made on them.
What, exactly, is a vaccine?
A vaccine is something that helps a person build up immunity to an infectious disease. It works by intentionally introducing the body to an inactive form of a disease-causing germ, or something similar to it. This then stimulates the immune system’s production of antibodies, the proteins that help to protect the person from a future infection if they ever come across the real germ.
Think of it like a workout for your immune system: You’re “sending it to the gym and preparing it to be able to do something when it encounters the real thing in the future,” says Tony Moody, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics and immunology at Duke University School of Medicine and a principal investigator at the Duke Human Vaccine Institute. “Essentially, what a vaccine is doing is teaching the immune system how to handle something before you actually encounter the real thing — so that, hopefully, when you do encounter the real thing, you’re able to deal with it quickly and get rid of it.”
In the case of the new coronavirus, a vaccine would make a person resistant to an infection from the virus and the illness it causes — COVID-19 — or, at the very least, make it so that a person who becomes infected has “a shorter course [of disease] or not as many complications,” Moody adds.

Which coronavirus vaccines are leading the pack?

Two are considered the frontrunners in the U.S.: a vaccine from Moderna and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and one from Pfizer and BioNTech.
What makes these vaccines special? The companies behind both vaccines report they are highly effective at preventing COVID-19 in clinical trial participants. PfizeBioNTech announced on Nov. 18 that its trial has met all of the required safety and efficacy endpoints and that its two-dose vaccine is 95 percent effective against COVID-19 beginning 28 days after the first dose. (In adults 65 and older, the vaccine was found to be 94 percent effective at preventing COVID-19.) An interim analysis of Moderna’s phase 3 clinical trial found its vaccine to be 94.5 percent effective at preventing COVID-19. It’s important to note, however, that the data from both trials has not been peer-reviewed.
Pfizer has submitted its coronavirus vaccine to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for emergency use authorization (EUA). The agency is expected to meet with an advisory committee to discuss the vaccine candidate on Dec. 10. Moderna expects to file for EUA in the coming weeks, once it meets all of its safety and efficacy endpoints.

What is emergency use authorization?

An EUA is a green light, of sorts, from the FDA. It is not the same as official approval.
During a public health emergency, such as the coronavirus pandemic, the FDA can authorize previously unapproved medical products to diagnose, treat or prevent the illness of concern in a timely manner when there are no other approved or available alternatives. The EUA process is faster than standard FDA approval, which can take six to 10 months. However, data proving safety and effectiveness are still required for authorization, and the FDA and an advisory committee of experts use this data to weigh the risks and benefits of the product in question.

What other vaccines hold promise?

The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are two of four vaccines in the third phase of testing in U.S. trials. The others include one from AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, and another from Johnson & Johnson.
A phase 3 trial is when researchers study the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine candidates against a placebo in a large population (more than 30,000 volunteers in the case of these vaccine trials). A phase 3 trial also allows researchers to see how well these vaccines work in populations that are most likely to get severely ill from a SARS-CoV-2 infection, including older adults, people with underlying health conditions, and racial and ethnic minorities, who have higher rates of hospitalization and death from COVID-19.
“Because if the vaccine can’t work well in the people who need it the most, then obviously we need a better vaccine or a different strategy,” says Jesse Goodman, M.D., director of Georgetown University’s Center on Medical Product Access, Safety and Stewardship (COMPASS) and former chief scientist at the FDA.
The vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer utilize a new technology, known as mRNA, which introduces a genetic code the body can use to make its own viral protein to induce an immune response. AstraZeneca’s vaccine uses a nonreplicating chimpanzee adenovirus to deliver a SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to stimulate an immune response, and Johnson & Johnson’s one-dose vaccine is made from a genetically modified adenovirus.
Just because these four are leading the pack, however, doesn’t mean the other vaccine candidates out there — all 234, according to the Milken Institute’s vaccine tracker — are out of the race. Eight additional vaccines are also in phase 3 trials around the world, a database maintained by the New York Times shows, and more than 50 others are in phase 1 and 2 studies, some of which employ “more traditional technologies that are used in currently approved vaccines,” Goodman explains.

Can more than one vaccine candidate work and be authorized or approved?

Absolutely. “In fact, it’s highly desirable,” says William Schaffner, M.D., an infectious disease specialist and professor of preventive medicine at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, because that would mean “there would be more vaccine manufacturers working to actually produce the vaccine, and so we could more expeditiously try to vaccinate the population in the United States and beyond.”
Kathleen Neuzil, M.D., professor in vaccinology and director of the Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, echoes Schaffner’s sentiment and points to the flu vaccine for comparison: There are multiple formulations on the market, including the injectable high-dose vaccine and the nasal spray vaccine, for example, which are recommended for different populations.
“We really need every person on earth, theoretically, to be able to receive this vaccine. So, to me, [having more than one option] is a positive, because we need so much,” she adds.

When will the other coronavirus vaccines apply for EUA?

It’s hard to pinpoint when a vaccine candidate will be ready to apply for FDA authorization — that all depends on when scientists are able to collect enough data from the phase 3 clinical trials to know whether the vaccine is safe and effective at preventing a coronavirus infection or decreasing its severity in at least 50 percent of vaccine recipients. (The 50 percent efficacy standard was set by the FDA in June. For comparison, the influenza vaccine is between 40 percent and 60 percent effective.)
One thing that could delay the process: the rate at which clinical trial participants get infected. In order for the trials to show that a vaccine candidate works, some participants need to contract the coronavirus out in the community. (They are not being introduced to SARS-CoV-2 in the lab.) “The end point is the number of people who get sick; it’s not a calendar date,” Harvard’s Bloom says.
As Schaffner points out, the population that typically volunteers for clinical trials is the same population that is more likely to adhere to public health guidance put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. “They’re usually the type of people who, in the COVID era, are being very careful. They’re social distancing; they’re wearing masks. They don’t go out to restaurants; they haven’t traveled,” he says. “And some of us think that these trials may have to run a little longer than people anticipated for just that reason. Because the volunteers tend to be very careful people.”
An adverse reaction to a vaccine candidate could also slow the process. Both AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson paused their phase 3 trials to investigate a participant who may have experienced a complication from the vaccine. (The two companies have since resumed research.) Bloom says while this delays things a little bit, “it proves that the system is working.” Pointing to the trial’s safety measures in place, he adds, “It is exactly what should be done when anybody is sick.”

When will a vaccine be available to the public?

As soon as possible. In a Sept. 16 hearing before a Senate committee, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Robert Redfield, M.D., said once the FDA green-lights a vaccine, the government “wants to be in a position to distribute it within 24 hours.”
When the FDA issues an EUA for the vaccine, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) will quickly hold a public meeting to review the vaccine’s data and then vote on whether to recommend the vaccine. The ACIP will also specify who should receive it, based on the data collected in the trials.
If initial supplies are limited, the ACIP is considering four groups to recommend for early COVID-19 vaccination until there’s enough vaccine for everyone:

Experts have made predictions on when the vaccine will be more widely available to the general public. The CDC’s Redfield estimates it will likely take “six to nine months to get the American public vaccinated.”

How will the vaccine be distributed?

The federal government is overseeing the distribution and tracking of coronavirus vaccines in the U.S., and the CDC is working with state, tribal, territorial and local jurisdictions for vaccine plans in their respective areas. The government is also partnering with private companies to ensure high-risk individuals can easily access a vaccine when one is available.
All vaccines will be ordered through the CDC; much of the vaccine manufacturing and stockpiling is happening at the same time as late-stage clinical trials so that if/when a vaccine receives FDA authorization or approval, the medicine will be ready to roll out to the public.
Ensuring there is proper transportation and storage for the vaccines is part of this planning process. Both the Pfizer and the Moderna vaccines require cold storage at specific temperatures — Pfizer’s more so than Moderna’s — meaning pharmacies and clinics throughout the U.S. will need to be equipped with specialized freezers and refrigerators to keep the medicines stable.
Ordering the supplies needed to vaccinate millions of Americans is another key part of the distribution planning process, as is scaling up safety surveillance and monitoring for long-term effectiveness.
“I think in the beginning, it’s going to be very, very challenging,” Harvard’s Bloom said about the vaccine distribution process. “But by the end of the spring, if not well before then, this should be running smoothly,” pending any technical glitches.

How much will the vaccine cost?

The goal: Nothing. The federal government has prepurchased hundreds of millions of vaccine doses with taxpayer money, and these will be given to Americans at no cost, according to the CDC.
Vaccine providers will be able to charge an administration fee for giving the shot, but this fee should be covered by public or private insurance, or by a government relief fund for the uninsured.

If a vaccine is not 100 percent effective, can I still get COVID-19?

That may be the case, although more details on the vaccine’s effectiveness — especially in subpopulations — should emerge in the third phase of clinical trials and in posttrial surveillance. And “that’s something that the recipients will have to understand when they get the vaccine,” Schaffner says. “The vaccine provides protection, but it won’t be like a suit of armor.”
His main message: Just because you roll up your sleeve and get the shot doesn’t mean you can throw away your mask and disregard other prevention efforts such as social distancing and handwashing. Those will be crucial “for quite some time” in order to get control over the virus, Schaffner says.
Another consideration: An approved vaccine will likely require two doses, several weeks apart, which will stretch out the time before it is effective in recipients. (Johnson & Johnson’s one-dose vaccine candidate is the exception.) The duration of immunity from the vaccine is also unclear at this point. “It’s possible people will need boosters before we’re done with all this,” Goodman adds.

Why does the vaccine development process take so long?

Though timelines may seem long and “frustratingly inefficient,” the speed at which the coronavirus vaccine process is moving is unprecedented, says Duke’s Moody.
Vaccine development typically takes 10 to 15 years, and the fastest vaccine created thus far was for mumps — that process took four years. What’s more, after a vaccine is approved, it can take months to years to scale up manufacturing and production for widespread distribution. The U.S., however, already has a head start on this.
“I think it’s really important for people to understand that the response to this pathogen has been faster than any other pathogen in history,” Moody says. “The fact that you had a virus that was first reported in China in December, and by March we were already talking about setting up a phase 1 trial ... I think the speed of the response, both by the medical community and by everyone else, is actually pretty astonishing.”

What if scientists don’t come up with a coronavirus vaccine that works?

That’s unlikely at this point, but it is a possibility. And that’s why it’s important to pursue treatments for COVID-19, as well, Moody says.
“If we had sort of the Tamiflu equivalent for coronavirus where you could be exposed and take Tamiflu and be protected, or you could get early disease and it could attenuate the disease or shorten the course, that would be great,” Moody says of the antiviral treatment for influenza. “There’s a lot of work being done there. And I think all of that work needs to proceed as well.”
The FDA has so far approved the antiviral drug remdesivir for treatment of some patients hospitalized with COVID-19. The agency has also issued an EUA for convalescent plasma to treat people who are hospitalized with the illness and for bamlanivimab, a monoclonal antibody therapy to treat mild to moderate cases of COVID-19 in nonhospitalized patients.
The World Health Organization has also published guidelines that recommend the use of inexpensive and common corticosteroids such as hydrocortisone and dexamethasone for the treatment of patients with severe cases of COVID-19. The guidelines come after an analysis of several clinical trials found that corticosteroids cut the risk of death in patients hospitalized with COVID-19. The new guidelines, however, emphasize that steroids should not be used to treat patients with mild symptoms of the disease.

2020.11.27 19:52 jjay1845327 18X Special Forces Pipeline Explained through SFAS - General Breakdown/Tips/Advice

I’m posting this because I’ve spent countless hours googling and looking at every forum possible to find out more about Special Forces (SF), selection (SFAS), the 18X pipeline, and everything related to Green Berets. I got a lot of helpful information from the internet and by talking with people already in SF that really prepared me for the pipeline. I’m only posting this because I want to be able to pass along this knowledge to others going down this route and hopefully answer questions that I wish I had answered when I was going through.
I am not posting this because I think I’ve made it - I passed SFAS and am now in the Q Course, so I’ve by no way made it. I am not posting this with the intent on helping people cheat the course (people typically call this “G2” or getting “intel” on the course). None of the information I’m passing along isn’t already in the public domain. I hope this information helps people prepare, train, and understand the SF pipeline up to SFAS. I’ll answer all questions in this public forum but probably won’t do individual/private messages.
I’m going to roughly break down my thoughts thematically and chronologically so it isn’t an enormous amount of rambling.
18X/REP63 Contract
All I wanted to do in the Army was go SF so I made that very clear to my recruiter. You have the power in that relationship with the recruiter - they can’t force you to sign a contract that you don’t want so make sure you stand up for yourself. If they say they don’t have any 18X contracts, then wait until they have it or talk to another recruiter in your area. DO NOT RELY ON PICKING IT UP IN OSUT (OSUT is basic training and infantry training combined) - we had zero people pick it up in our OSUT class. If this is what you want, then don’t leave your future up to chance. Be mature and advocate for yourself with your recruiter to get the contract you want and be willing to wait or go somewhere else to get it.
I’m very happy that I went the National Guard (NG) route. Not many people know about this route and always say they wish they did. The 18X/REP63 pipeline is exactly the same until you graduate and go to your SF group - Active Duty (AD) guys will go to their active duty group and NG guys will go back to their state. I ultimately chose the NG route because there was a unit in my home state and it would allow me flexibility when/if I make it to have a piece of civilian life with my SF duties. Nobody likes to think about it, but statistically only ~30% of people make it through SFAS. And that’s not including all the people that get dropped before SFAS from injuries, failed PT tests, stupid mistakes, and life factors that result in not making it through the pipeline. So, by going NG, you have a fall back plan if things don’t go according to plan. Granted that “fall back plan” can become an easy excuse to quit when you’re deep in the suck, so if you’re not committed enough that’s definitely dangerous. I recommend people look into the NG route if you want to go SF - I’m very aware that it’s not for everyone and it definitely has its drawbacks, but it’s important to know all of your options.
Prep Before OSUT
I was in extremely good shape going into OSUT and I lost a lot of that strength throughout OSUT. You’re not getting great sleep or food and the physical training (PT) is meant to get the bottom 10% of the OSUT class to pass the minimum standards. The PT program is not meant to get in shape guys stronger. So you’ll definitely have to do a lot of bodyweight work on your own in the barracks to maintain strength or get stronger. Even though I lost a lot of that strength, I was still glad I physically trained a lot before because I had a higher bar to drop from if that makes sense.
I did a decent amount of rucking before I came to OSUT and I wouldn’t say that’s super necessary. Any rucking progress you make in the months before OSUT will be hard to maintain in OSUT because your rucks are very slow group marches that are way below the speed you’ll need for SF standards. But I’m glad I did because I learned what the different speeds felt like - I knew what a 12:00 / 13:00 / 14:00 / 15:00 ruck generally felt like. But that’s all stuff you’ll learn when you make it to Fort Bragg and can ruck on your own and in the prep course. Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about rucking before OSUT
Basic Training/OSUT
I’m not sure how it’s working now, but infantry OSUT for me was 22 weeks. That’s a very long time and it definitely felt like that, especially because the world changed with COVID about halfway through. I’d say the most important thing is to have a goal/skill you want to work on in OSUT. I knew I was a good leader in sports/my civilian life, but I knew that this leadership environment would be different; a mixture of some highly motivated/capable guys, 18 year olds that joined without fully knowing what they were getting into, and people from all different races, class, education levels, and motivations.
So I told myself I’d use this as an opportunity to practice how to lead a guerilla army - how do you gain respect, understand, teach and lead a diverse group like this? I sought out leadership positions throughout OSUT and tried different techniques to connect with different groups of guys in the platoon. That gave me something to focus on and develop a skill that I knew I’d need further down the line.
There are a lot of other goals you can use. Focusing heavily on improving physical fitness and doing a lot of extra PT on your own or leading group PT in the barracks. If you know you lack discipline, really lean in on making your lockeequipment/uniform/behavior always super disciplined. Things like that will help you get a solid take away from your time in OSUT and not make it feel like a waste of time.
You do morning PT of either track running or calisthenics like pushups/situps and other body weight work. It’s not very challenging if you’re in shape and can get redundant. Then you have breakfast and do your training for the day. If you’re going to the shooting range you’ll spend almost all day there, or you’ll do medical training week, or other random stuff. Land navigation week was pretty good training in OSUT so take that seriously because it’s a good base for the rest of the SF pipeline. I honestly don’t remember most of the training now but it wasn’t very hard. My platoon got more tactical training because we took it upon ourselves to work with our Senior Drill Sergeant to really get a lot out of our field training exercises on ambushes and raids so I actually learned a lot there. The training is what you make of it, but also how much your Drill Sergeants care.
Airborne
Airborne is your first taste of “freedom” where you have your phone, can choose what you eat in the dining hall (DFAC), and you can do your own PT in the morning (at least we could because of COVID). The school itself isn’t hard, just don’t get hurt. Listen to all the instructions, get a strong exit out of the airplane, and know what to do for malfunctions and when to pull your reserve parachute. I knew some good guys that had bad luck and broke their legs on jumps which really sucks. But that’s a small minority - if you do what they teach and don’t panic you’ll be okay. It was pretty cool the first time, but after that I just focused on not getting hurt. Don’t touch your equipment once you’ve been inspected in the parachute shed or they will recycle you.
Special Forces Prep Course (SFPC)
SFPC, used to be called SOPC, is designed to prepare 18x’s for the physical events and land navigation portion of SFAS. And I’d say it does a good job at that. You do two PT sessions a day and usually have a class in the middle of the day. Classes vary from simple knot tying, blister care, a leadership practice course, one obstacle course, land navigation classes, and other things. The mornings are usually a run varying from 1 mile repeats to a 5 mile run. The afternoon is typically push ups, calisthenics, and ruck based workouts (we didn’t use weights because of COVID so we would do pushes over our head or ruck rows/squats). Then every week on Friday you do a ruck 4M, 6M, 8M, 10M, and the final 12M.
The last week of the course is designed to simulate Gate Week in SFAS; Gate Week is week one of SFAS that has runs and rucks to judge your individual physical capability. So the last week of SFPC is an APFT + 6 pull ups, 5M Run, and 12M ruck - the standards are Army standards, so no secrets exposed here: 240+, 5M in less than 40 minutes, 12M ruck under 3:00 (less than 15:00 pace).
Those minimum scores will not get you selected.
Big things to focus on in SFPC - keep your PT numbers up, stretch a ton, and DO NOT GET HURT. We had a lot of guys get hurt in our SFPC class and that will mess up your pipeline and result in not going to SFAS when you’re supposed to. Push yourself in SFPC, but not to the point that you’ll get injured. If you’ve played sports you’ll know the difference between being hurt and being injured. Going into SFAS injured is an easy way to get dropped because you’ll have very little time to recover while there.
Also, if you can’t climb rope, get some extra reps of that during SFPC. There are plenty of ropes around Bragg you can use. You’ll only climb rope on the Nasty Nick obstacle course but you won’t get much training on that in SFPC so you have to seek it out on your own. You’ll do a mini obstacle course during SFPC which is a confidence booster.
SFAS
SFAS is broken into three weeks - Gate Week, Land Navigation, and Team Week. I’m not going to give away any information that isn’t already out there, so this is pretty generic.
Gate Week is a week of physical events to see if you can physically withstand the rigors of SFAS and are strong enough to be SF. Events include the APFT+6 pull ups, unknown standard/distance runs and rucks, obstacle course, and other physical events. You won’t know the time or distance of the events, so it’s important to do your best and try to be in the top half or top third of the class.
Land Navigation is a week of practice events and two nights of the graded Star Course. Take the practice events very seriously - you’ll be able to get a good feel for the terrain, what it’s like to go through a draw in day vs. night, narrow down your pace count, and gain confidence.
General Tips
Team Week is the differentiating factor in SFAS. It’s the hardest, most challenging thing I’ve ever done and will definitely test you. It’s very important that you just be yourself - you can’t fake who you really are when you’re that exhausted, stressed, hungry, and tired. Lean on your strengths and help in any way possible. I know that’s all super generic but I’m not giving away any of the events or how to do anything because team week is the most important part of SFAS to make sure the rights guys get through. The classic advice you always hear is “Don’t Quit.” Definitely true in team week.
Overall, I have a lot of respect for SFAS. It’s brutal and will challenge you in many different ways. But it’s not impossible. Just avoid making unforced errors - that’s key. if they tell you to have your equipment set up in a certain way, set it up exactly like that. If they say have x,y,z packed, then have all of that packed. Don’t shoot yourself in the foot by making avoidable mistakes on very obvious and clearly stated standards.
Other Random Thoughts
The 18X pipeline is very long, so you really need to know that this is what you want. Write out exactly why you want/need to do this. If you can’t put it into words, or it doesn’t go deeper than “I think it’d be really cool” then you’re screwed. You’ll see along the way a lot of guys that aren’t serious about it, signed up on a whim, or aren’t physically/mentally prepared for this job. Those guys will pass along the wayside, so really make sure you make friends with motivated and serious candidates. Have people that will push you and keep you accountable.
30th AG is the inprocessing center for 18X’s going to infantry OSUT at Fort Benning. That place is AWFUL. I can’t imagine how much worse it is with COVID. Don’t lose hope there - and I’m not kidding, I saw a lot of guys just completely lose it there. You will get out of there and move on to OSUT but that place sucks. Keep your eye on the prize, meet some good friends, and just try to keep a somewhat positive attitude. You’ll be kept up all night, standing in the cold, waiting in lines, getting yelled at by drill sergeants, having civilians herd you like sheep through all of your equipment issuing/shots/medical/finance, and other soldiers acting like idiots. I wish someone braced me for what 30th would be like, so let this be your warning. It should only last 10 or so days, but sometimes people can be stuck there longer. Stay strong.
I’d recommend keeping a journal of the pipeline so you can think through your thoughts. There will be a lot of good times and a lot of trying times and putting your thoughts onto paper can be helpful in processing those. And it’ll be cool to look back on at the end.
When you get to Fort Bragg, don’t overdo the drinking/eating out. It’ll be your first taste of legitimate freedom and you’ll want to live it up, but you really need to stay focused. Drinking is detrimental to your physical performance and can undo all of the hard work and gains you’ve made on your own or in SFPC. Also, alcohol related incidents are the easiest way to get kicked out of the pipeline so it’s a huge risk that’s not worth the reward. Have a few now and then if you’re of age, but don’t over do it.
Practical Tips
I’m sure I’ll think of more things, and please ask as many questions as you want. I’ll do my best to circle back and answer all that I can. I’ve gotten a lot from these forums in the past so I just wanted to help out anyone going through the pipeline. Good luck and stay focused.

2020.11.27 19:23 mckernan599gto First time builder wanting the sim rig I've always dreamt of. No idea where to start.

Borrowing this template from elsewhere. Thought maybe I'd have better luck here.

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
I want a PC optimized for Microsoft Flight Simulator. I’ve been playing flight sims for 15 years and I’ve never had a computer capable of running them smoothly on max settings with addons so I’d like to finally have that capability. I want to be able to run it on ultra settings in at least 2k resolution with consistently high FPS (60 as a benchmark but I know flight sims are tough on frames). In a perfect world I’d want a consistent 4k 60fps on ultra settings but from what I’ve read, that’s nearly impossible for this game at the moment without some sort of super computer. I also want it to be VR capable later down the road when I decide to buy a headset and maybe 4k capable/upgradable as well. I also play DCS and racing games (assetto corsa, forza, etc.) if that makes a difference. MSFS is definitely the most demanding. Those are just about the only games I play and that will be the primary use of the PC.
MSFS recommended specs can be found here, but these for for the previous gen of graphics cards and processors. I want overkill, not juuuuust enough to run the game on high settings in less intensive areas based on the recommended specs.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
$3000
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
I can start buying parts ASAP, but it looks like I’ll have to wait if I want the new AMD/Nvidia goodies. If there are things like cases, monitors, fans, etc. that I can buy now or maybe score a black Friday deal on, that would be great. I don’t mind waiting for the new graphics cards and CPUs to be in stock though.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Tower, OS, Monitor, and of course everything that goes inside the tower. I don’t really care for how the tower looks, or any part of the PC for that matter, especially if money can be saved here and put towards more performance-oriented parts.
Monitor is a bit tricky for me. I’m open to suggestions, but ideally, I’d want a 1440p widescreen monitor (30 to 34in-ish) with a 144hz refresh rate… and curved. However, I know those are very expensive, and I don’t want it to eat up my budget. I currently use a Sceptre curved 27" 1080p 75hz monitor connected to my laptop. I like it and it has been a good budget curved monitor, but now I really just want something that is a higher resolution and refresh rate than this one. Size is lower down on the priority list followed by curvature. I think a flat 27in 1440p 120Hz monitor would be the minimum to upgrade to.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
US – Denver, CO. Yes, I have a microcenter close by.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Amazon basics keyboard (it works just fine for what I use it for), Logitech MX Master2S mouse, possibly the monitor mentioned above if I decide to hold off on a new one for a bit. I also have a suite of sim gear: Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS, Thrustmaster TFRP Rudder Pedals, TrackIR, Fanatec CSR wheels and pedals.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Probably not. I don’t quite understand how this works and I would prefer not to dive into it unless someone wants to explain it and believes that it would significantly improve my flight sim experience.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
-At least 2TB of storage if not more.
-SSD.
-At least 32GB of RAM, 64GB would be nice if the budget allows. I've read that the sim can touch 30 GB in high density areas on max settings. So 32 GB should be more than enough. However, it'd be nice to have some extra for different browsers/programs open while I'm playing.
-A good amount of USB ports (at least 3 or 4). I have a port extender with about 7 usb ports and those are all filled up, so a few extra on the PC would be nice, but it’s not absolutely necessary.
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
I plan on using a wired connection, but I would like Wifi connectivity as well. I have an Xfinity Xfi router with a Gig speed plan.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
No preferences. Don't really care what it looks like. The more money that can be spent towards the performance of the PC, the better.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Yes. Windows 10.
Extra info or particulars:
-I want the latest and greatest for the budget. I’m thinking RTX 3080 (I figure a 3090 is too large of a chunk of my budget and not worth the leap in price over the 3080, but heck if you can make it work I could be in), the new AMD Ryzen 9 5950x or 5900x (I’ve read that the AMD processors are generally better, and cheaper, than intel for single core intensive games such as flight sims, but please educate me), and loads of RAM. I’m also open to AMD’s latest offerings in graphics cards but I’m not as familiar with those as I am with the new Nvidia cards. Once again, please educate me if you have other suggestions or if I’m going about this all wrong. This is all very new to me.
-As I mentioned earlier, I don’t want the monitor to suck too much out of my budget if it begins to significantly affect the PC hardware budget (think CPU, GPU). I have a monitor already, so I can wait and buy a nicer one a bit later if I need to.
-I have never built a PC before. Will all the parts you list out just fit together seamlessly? Do I have to put it together a certain way so parts don’t overheat etc.? What are some resources on the internet I can use to make sure I don’t make a very costly mistake putting it all together? I’m a pretty mechanically savvy person, so I’m not THAT clueless, but I just want to be sure I don’t screw anything up. I also have some friends that could probably help put it together.
-I want it to be easily upgradable. Thinking “hey I’ve got some extra cash to splurge on a 3090 to replace the 3080 now”. I want to be able to easily swap out the old with the new. If that’s something that can easily be planned for?
-I am in NO RUSH. I know all the new and shiny Nvidia/AMD offerings are sold out everywhere at the moment. I’m willing to wait. With that being said… 1) am I better off waiting to buy everything at once when production of these things catch up with demand? or 2) Can I just ordering everything now and reserve/preorder the other items that aren’t available at the moment?
Thank you in advance for any and all help. Happy holidays and stay safe :)

2020.11.27 17:11 ctwelve Dandelion: Chapter 4

[Beginning Previously]
D.A.N.I.
Something was going to hit them, and DANI wasn’t sure if he could dodge. It was tiny, it was dark, it was dense, and it was fast. All those things combined meant his usual margins for error had been completely used up. If it had been larger, brighter, or slower…
As it was, they had twenty minutes. Which sounded like plenty, except Dandelion’s titanic volume and abysmal thrust-to-mass ratio were working against them. DANI stressed the power grid and cranked his frame speed to the fastest it could possibly go. As far as his subjective sense of time was concerned, the milliseconds were now flowing by like minutes. The crew were statues, even their fastest and twitchiest movements happening at a torturous glacier pace.
He’d bought himself time to think. Time to calculate.
First, full power to the main engine. Plenty of power there, but it could only thrust along the ship’s long axis. Where was the object going to hit? Insufficient data. Resolve that. He set every sensor he had on that side of the ship to tracking the incoming threat, resolving its precise trajectory down to a fraction of a millimeter.
While he waited for that to return, he referenced his long-term memory and called up several old calculations he’d made years before they’d even left Earth. Emergency measures: how much extra thrust could he squeeze out by jettisoning water, firing out the launches in escape pod mode, and even venting atmosphere. He even factored in the tiny amount of thrust he could get from the little cold-gas jets on the surface that kept Dandelion’s spin from slowing.
The LIDAR pings finally came back, having narrowed down the object’s vector to within a few centimeters. He plugged it into all his calculations. With moderate measures, he could just get out of the way. In fact, he could make it miss by almost a hundred meters, but in orbital terms, that was grazing the skin. If it turned out to be a bomb of some kind, or if it was a guided weapon—
He calculated possible outcomes and assigned values to each branch based on probability versus risk versus secure options. By the twenty-millisecond mark, he had reached his conclusion. He set alarms blaring across the ship and ordered the crew to their emergency stations. This was no time for half-measures. He was going to do everything he could and pray. If the object turned out to be a guided weapon of some kind, even his best might not be enough. Certainly the human race had built weapons he would never be able to dodge in this situation.
Which meant the first and most important step was to evacuate the children.
Amber Houston
“One, two, three…” Walker was tense. He’d appeared from nowhere at a dead run to meet the Rangers as they formed up at their emergency station, and he was taking the quickest headcount Amber had ever seen him do. He didn’t look scared. At least, he wasn’t crying and shaking like Amber wanted to. He was grim-faced, focused, sharp.
The gravity was all wrong. There was a definite pull toward the back of the ship and down through the soles of Amber’s boots. Whatever was happening, DANI was accelerating harder than he’d ever accelerated before, even on a thrust day. It was making Amber’s stomach turn over on itself and adding to her stress.
“Twenty-two, twenty-three, twenty-four…”
She hated standing there, she hated waiting. That was their job right now, to stand there and be ready for whatever orders Walker gave them, but right now that was the worst thing for Amber. She needed to be doing something, to have something to focus on other than the mournful wail of the siren and the gnawing knowledge that something, somehow had gone very wrong.
“Thirty-eight, thirty-nine…”
There was a lurch in the deck this time, and DANI’s voice changed its message.
“All Ranger troops, prepare to abandon ship. You have ten minutes. Repeat, all Ranger troops, prepare to abandon ship. You have ten minutes.”
“Oh, Authors…” Amber turned to the frightened squeak from over her shoulder. She held out a hand and Nikki took it, squeezing so hard it hurt. She looked terrified.
“Forty-eight!” Walker reached the end of the line. He marched back down it with a hand pressed to his ear. “DANI, Walker Torres. Troop all present and accounted for, proceeding to our launch.”
He listened to something, then nodded sharply. “Rangers! Our launch is number Seven-Three-Two! Read back!”
Something to do at last! Amber had to shout to be sure she was heard over the sirens, as the whole troop chorused, “Seven! Three! Two!”
“You got it! Roy!” Walker ordered. “You’re lead! I’m tail-end Charlie! Double time!”
Amber’s feet moved of their own accord. Roy looked just as grateful as she felt to have something to focus on, and along with his sister, knew the outerdecks better than anyone else. Emergency elevators had thrust up from under the streets all over the city, leading down to the launch gantries. He took them off at a brisk jog, with Amber and Nikki on his heels at the head of a column of terrified Rangers, and with Walker at the back to ensure nobody was left behind.
The elevator was little more than a claustrophobic metal cage. Orange flashes highlighted a rail at Amber’s chest height, and large signs instructed them to grab hold of it and tuck their feet under another bar at ankle height. Numbly, she obeyed. They all knew the drill, but this was the first time they’d done it for real.
Walker was the last in and took position at the rails himself.
“DANI! Troop Seven-three-two, ready to drop!”
The word “ready” wasn’t even fully out of his mouth when the gate clattered shut and the elevator…dropped. Several of the Rangers yelped, and Amber shut her eyes. They were almost in freefall, held back only by the pneumatic pressure in the shaft.
It was a long fall. For nearly a minute, there was only the fight to stop her stomach from crawling up her throat and the sound of her friends making terrified noises all around her. Every so often there was a bright red streak as they plunged past an emergency light, or a squealing sound of metal knocking sparks off metal as they rattled against the guide rails.
Then the brakes engaged. Gravity returned with a vengeance and ramped up staggeringly hard. Roy put a steady hand at the top of Amber’s back and did the same for a pair of the youngest on his other side. Amber gritted her teeth and fought to remain standing as what felt like a copy of herself settled on her shoulders.
It kept getting worse, and right as she felt her legs begin to tremble, the ride came almost to a stop. The last few meters were practically sedate as the elevator settled into its landing, with the brakes glowing bright orange from the friction.
The gate dropped with a crash. They were right opposite their launch.
“Seven three two!” Roy called and pointed to it. He stooped to sweep Rose Durand up into his arms and carry her aboard as Nikki sprang forward nimbly under the heavy G-load, and stood at the launch’s ramp to urge the troop in.
“Amber, help them strap in!” she barked.
Amber wanted nothing more than to slump into one of the acceleration couches that lined the launch’s walls. The middle of the floor was densely packed with crates and a stack of cargo containers, all the supplies they’d need to set up a town when they landed. The launches were there for colonization, after all, and had been carrying the necessary supplies for first-wave colonists since they’d left Earth.
That allowed them to serve double duty as lifeboats. Amber squeezed down one side of the pile of cargo and somehow found the strength to buckle Rose into the seat Roy had dumped her in. The little girl was looking pale and scared, but gave a small, brave nod as Amber strapped her in and made sure she was properly secured.
She locked in Arianna Mayweather, Floyd Harris, Kelly Liu, Danish Abbasi, Tony Stokes, Steve Evans, Marie Baker, and Doug Locklear before Roy tapped her on the shoulder and ushered her into a couch of her own. By the time she crashed into it, her arms and legs were starting to feel like rubber.
He got her seated properly, double-checked her belt after she did it up, put a hand on her shoulder, and vanished sideways to work on somebody else. A few seconds later, Nikki sat down to Amber’s right and fastened her own straps.
The ramp was rising. Some part of Amber had been hoping against hope this was some kind of drill or exercise, but the ramp changed that.
This was real, this was really happening.
Judging from Nikki’s expression, she’d felt the same way. She gulped as she watched it close, watched the seals engage and bathe the rear of the launch in red light as they locked down. Walker spun by to check their straps one last time as Roy finally took a seat next to Nikki. He said something encouraging that Amber didn’t really hear, and then took his own seat at the front.
“DANI! Seven-three-two, all aboard and ready!” he declared the moment his own seatbelt was securely buckled across his chest.
If DANI replied, Amber didn’t hear it. Instead there was the whining, terrible crescendo of powerful engines coming online, and the deep, primal vibration of the onboard fusion reactor spinning up to its almost incomprehensible full output. Nikki’s hand found Amber’s as their launch swung out onto the catapult rail. There was a jolt, a clang, the engine whine mutated into a blasting roar…
Pure bruising force mashed her down into her chair. There was a suggestion of incredible speed past the tiny portholes, other launches whipping by until they became a blur, and then—
Darkness. Darkness full of tiny points of light.
For the first time in her life, Amber Houston saw the stars.
D.A.N.I.
Two hundred lifeboats were already gone, a tenth of the total. DANI was being careful to stage his launches for maximum effect—each one that went thundering out of a launch tube was a little extra thrust, a little nudge that pushed Dandelion that extra bit further out of harm’s way.
A subroutine in the back of his awareness was noting their growing deviation from Newhome approach. Already it was ruined. Rather than arriving sometime next year, he was going to have to calculate a whole new navigational solution once this was over.
He didn’t care.
Captain Torres was watching her own readouts with white knuckles clenched on the desk in front of her.
“How many?”
“A thousand Rangers launched already.” DANI kept his voice calm and reassuring. “All Rangers should be evacuated within the next three minutes. We can begin launching second-stage evacuees in approximately five minutes and thirty seconds.”
“Time to impact?”
“If it’s unpowered, it will miss.” DANI promised her.
“And if it isn’t?” Torres insisted.
DANI ran some uncomfortably slapdash calculations based on far too many assumptions and wild guesses for comfort. He didn’t like any of the answers he got.
“Four minutes.”
Torres swore.
“Is there anything the rest of the crew can do?” she asked.
DANI didn’t see any point in anything other than brutal honesty. “Captain…if it hits us, it will tear through us like a rifle bullet through a water bottle. Crew casualties will be total.”
He watched Torres absorb that. Even at the incredible rate of evacuation they’d achieved with the Rangers, there would still be nine hundred thousand people aboard.
“…Let’s hope it’s unpowered, then.”
“Indeed. Half the lifeboats are away.”
The object wasn’t showing any signs of accelerating or changing course, he noted. It might not need to. If the device was a sufficiently large bomb, a shaped charge, or simply equipped to create dense shrapnel, it would still be quite lethal.
Still, as each second crawled by with no change in the object’s velocity, DANI allowed himself to feel some faint hope. He wasn’t going to feel safe until it was twenty minutes away and receding, but the seconds ticked by without incident.
“The last Ranger troop is away,” he announced at the two minutes and thirty-seven seconds mark. More than twenty seconds ahead of his estimates. He had to hand it to the Rangermasters and their troops—when the proverbial had hit the fan, they had risen to the occasion and surpassed his calculations.
“Object tracking?” Torres asked.
“No change.”
“Take a message for my husband, please.”
DANI devoted a fragment of his time to recording her words. He’d burst-transmit them in the ship’s dying microseconds if need be, but he was becoming increasingly convinced that wouldn’t be necessary.
It was a lovely message, though. Raw. Heartfelt. He decided he’d save it for posterity, if nothing else. “Message saved, Captain,” he said once she’d finished. “T-minus twelve seconds to closest approach.”
Torres nodded.
“Ten…nine…eight…”
Outside, the last of the launches boosted up to cruise mode, a solid three-G acceleration, and flashed away. At least, DANI comforted himself, the future of the Human race in the Newhome system had been secured. Dandelion’s mission was technically complete.
“Six…five…”
People were hugging all over the ship, holding each other tight, or sitting curled up and lost in their own private despair.
“Two…one…” He paused, and then suffused his voice with relief. “…T-plus one. Plus two. Plus three…the object is receding.”
Torres let out a tense held breath.
“Stand down any remaining launches,” she said. “Can you recall the Rangers?”
DANI turned his attention to a trajectory projection he’d been running in the background throughout the crisis. He considered it for a few milliseconds, and then reached a crucial decision.
“With all due respect, Captain, I think that might be a bad idea…” he said slowly.
Torres frowned at her monitor. “Why?”
DANI called up the projection. She stared at it for a terrible long moment.
“I see,” she said at last. “You’re…I hate to ask, but are you absolutely certain?”
DANI wasn’t offended in the slightest. The implications of what he was showing her were grave enough that he didn’t blame her at all.
“Yes, Captain,” he said instead. “The object originated on the surface of an inner-system planet.”
“You know what that means, right?” Torres pressed.
“Yes, Captain,” He mimicked taking a deep breath and suffused his voice with grim concern. “It would seem that someone, or something, shot at us.”
Amber Houston
Amber had slept, or at least dozed, somehow. Or maybe she hadn’t had a choice, given that even just sitting in her acceleration couch and breathing was a punishing effort. Maybe her body had decided the best way to endure it was to make her sleep.
Her back hurt. Her limbs felt leaden, and her feet felt swollen and numb inside her shoes. And she had a splitting headache. The moment it all went away was…it was like the biggest sneeze, or finally taking off a tight shirt. She actually gasped.
It hadn’t all gone away, in fact. When she sat forward and sighed with relief as her spine relaxed, she realized they were under normal gravity, one-G acceleration.
The safety light above her head went green, and a countdown started: eight hours and thirty minutes.
“Okay, Rangers, listen up!” Walker stood up, and forty-eight heads turned to look at him. “This is gonna be our pattern over the next few days. We’re accelerating hard toward Newhome, with breaks of regular one-G acceleration twice a day! Use this time wisely! This is your bathroom break, food break, exercise break, and sleep time! By the time that countdown reaches half an hour remaining, I expect you all to be rested, fed, hydrated, and back in your couch. Roy!”
“Yessir!”
“You’re safety officer! Everything we use gets packed and stowed ahead of the next three-G phase. Nikki!”
“Yes, Walker!”
“Break out the bedrolls and meal packs; make sure everybody’s fed and hydrated and gets their head down. Amber!”
Amber jumped. “Yes?”
“Make sure everyone is stretched out and healthy. Check carefully for bruising, sores, and blisters.” He gave her a nod, then turned to the rest of them. “Everybody else, find a clothing pack in your size and change into your PT gear. Any questions?”
A unanimous “no, Walker” rippled around the launch, and he nodded.
“Good. Go ahead and unlock your seatbelts.”
Gratefully, Amber released herself and stood up with a groan. Nervous chatter filled the launch as the Rangers stood up, massaged their aching bodies, and tried to stamp some life back into their feet.
She jumped to her task quickly, starting with Roy and Nikki, who were both stretching out and rolling their necks and shoulders.
“Any pain? Any bruising anywhere?”
“Naw! See?”
Naturally, Roy tore off his ruined school shirt to show her, and show off a little, too—he was Roy, after all—then turned and opened an overhead locker. He pulled out an obviously non-standard bag from one of the ship’s supermarkets and dug around inside it.
“What are you doing?”
“I hid some clothes and stuff back when I found out this would be our launch!”
“Why?”
“Dude. None of the standard-issue stuff fits me besides, like, the socks sometimes. Good boots are hard to find for a bear like me, too. I like these! They’re the only brand I ever tried that fits me right.”
He pulled off his shoes and socks, slipped on the pair he had stuffed into the boots, and jammed his feet in with a happy sigh. “See? Comfortable!” He then pulled it all right back off, stuffed his socks back in his boots, and carefully stowed them under his couch. “Ooh, that reminds me. Walker, sir!”
“Yes, Roy?”
“Nobody here is used to high gravity ‘sides me and Nick. They’re gonna get swollen feet pretty bad if they wear anything but socks.”
“Good point. Rangers! Socks only, keep your boots stowed! The long ones, Roy?”
“No, sir, those can pinch, too! Short socks, or nothin’ at all!”
“You heard him, Rangers. Short PT socks only!”
“Yes, Walker!”
Amber complied and nodded at Roy, who really was more thoughtful than she gave him credit for. “Thanks.”
Roy grinned hugely for her and bounced heavily on his toes. “Naw!”
“Don’t tell me you actually had some forethought, lil’ bro?” Nikki’s inevitable tease sounded a little more shaky than usual.
“Yup! Like always!” He reached up and pulled out another pair of bags. “These are for you two.”
When Amber checked hers, it contained a complete set of well-made clothing in exactly her size, including a good pair of new boots. There were some of her favorite snacks and energy bars, a hat…and Mister Wiggle. She stared at the long-lost blue-grey toy rabbit for a second in sheer disbelief, then pulled him out of the bag and ran a thumb through his fur. It was exactly as soft as she remembered.
“I thought I lost him ages ago!” Years ago, in fact. She’d been a little girl, and inconsolable at the time, but over the years had completely forgotten about her favorite bunny…until now.
“Uh, I found him wedged up against the wall behind my bed one day, and, I dunno.” Roy went beet-red and grumbled like he was all kinds of embarrassed. “I figured if something like this ever happened…”
“You seriously worried about this happening?”
“Uh, yeah!” Roy took the moment to unselfconsciously strip to his skin and step into his favorite PT shorts: close-fitting and breathable, with an amusingly impressive emphasis on short. “That’s the whole point of why we’re constantly rebuilding and maintaining the launches, right? Why would we do that if we wouldn’t maybe need them right away? So, uh…I’ve kept these bags stashed away and up-to-date.”
“And you worried about this?” Amber brandished the rabbit at him.
Roy for once had no answer. He went crimson and stared at his big, sturdy feet.
“Thanks, Roy. Really. I…” She looked down at it, smiled wistfully, and set it on her couch. “Thanks.”
Nikki gave the two of them a completely unreadable look, while Walker caught Amber’s eye and grinned knowingly. Confused and not knowing what else to do, Amber cleared her throat. “Don’t we have jobs to do?”
“Right! Jobs.” Roy’s questionable taste in shorts carried over to his trademark stretchy tank tops. He claimed they were cooler and stayed out of the way, but Amber suspected he had other reasons; Roy was an incorrigible show-off, after all.
That done, he got to work on the task Walker had given him.
Meanwhile, Nikki finished changing and immediately leapt to the task of unpacking their food and beds, and Amber found the simple fact of having something to do helped focus her mind. Up until now she’d just been suffering. Now, as she did the rounds and checked that everybody was healthy, she really started to think.
Okay. They were overboard. Or evacuated—whatever. They were en route to Newhome and apparently, they hadn’t turned around to go back to the ship, which was…worrying. The launches certainly had the thrust and fuel to do that…
So why hadn’t they?
The obvious answer was that DANI and Captain Torres must have felt there was some pressing reason they shouldn’t. Which meant Newhome colonization was going forward way ahead of schedule, and rather than being second-wave colonial apprentices, they were all going to be first-wave pioneers.
Actually…that was quite something. She’d accepted her position in the second wave as a consequence of her age and the realities of getting a working colony set up before the administration could send down apprentices. But if she’d had her way, she would have been on the first drops. She’d been a little disappointed that all the rivers, mountains, forests, and plants and stuff would be named by others first.
Now, suddenly, the prospect of being a real pioneer beckoned.
She finished checking everybody and made her report to Walker just as the countdown passed the seven hours and twenty minutes mark.
“Everyone seems okay,” she told him. “I found a few marks from clothing and stuff, and everybody’s kinda stiff and sore, but I didn’t find anything alarming.”
“Good.” Walker gave her a small smile, and to her shock she realized he looked stressed. He’d set a tablet aside as she approached, and she saw him make sure she couldn’t see its screen even as she was standing there.
Just how badly wrong had things gone? She decided to ask.
“Walker, is the ship okay? Are my parents—?”
“The ship’s fine,” Walker promised her instantly. “Everybody’s fine.”
“So why aren’t we going back?”
He glanced down the launch, then sighed and lowered his voice. “Amber, I’m only telling you this because I trust you to be discreet, okay?” He waited for her to nod and explained. “DANI thinks there might be danger. He hasn’t told me exactly what, yet, but it’s serious enough that we aren’t going back. We’re going to land.”
“Don’t we all deserve to know that?” she asked, indicating the rest of the troop. They were talking quietly among themselves and preparing ration packs as they got ready to get some sleep, and they all looked scared and tense.
Walker nodded. “You do,” he agreed, “and I hope I’ll be able to tell you everything in the next one-G phase. But I want to tell you the facts, and I’m afraid we all must wait for those. Go ahead and let the twins know their parents are okay, but other than that, can you keep it to yourself for me?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Thanks.” He turned and picked up a meal pack. “You’d better find your bedroll, which is doubtless directly between Roy and Nikki’s. We’ll need to eat, clean up, and do some PT before the next three-G phase, so the sooner you go to bed, the more sleep you get.”
Amber nodded. “Got it. Don’t neglect your own.”
That got him to smile, at least. “Yes, ma’am. I won’t.”
Feeling a little better, Amber sniffed out the twins, who sure enough had set up a kind of nest in a spot at the back of the launch that was almost private. As predicted, Amber’s bedroll was between theirs. She could tell it was hers, because Mister Wiggle had been placed neatly on the pillow.
They were warming up a meal pack for her as she joined them.
“Good news,” she reported as she sat.
Roy looked up. “Yeah?”
“Dandelion’s fine. It’s still there, everybody’s okay.”
They both sighed a little and relaxed.
“That is good news,” Nikki agreed. “I didn’t wanna think about…wait, how come we haven’t turned around, though?”
“Walker’s not sure, exactly. He said he hopes to have the facts tomorrow but, uh…we’re definitely going to Newhome, he says.”
“We’re not going back? Definitely?”
Amber shook her head. “He was pretty clear about that one.”
The twins looked at each other.
“Well…crap,” Roy ventured after a few seconds.
“Yeah, you said it.” Nikki poked listlessly at her food and then tried to set it aside. She looked like her appetite had totally fled her.
Amber couldn’t let that happen. “Nikki. You need to eat.”
“I’m not hungry right now.”
Roy thrust her pack back into her hands. “Eat, sis. I ain’t hungry either, but…”
“Oh, please!” Nikki scoffed, but took the pack at least. “You’re always hungry.”
“Well…we gotta keep our strength up,” Roy said. Amber had to admit, though, he dug into the rations with way less gusto than he usually showed.
Nikki at least forced down the whole pack with a little prompting, while Amber picked steadily through hers. None of them had much to say.
Roy disposed of the packaging with about seven hours left on the countdown, and by unspoken agreement, they bedded down. Amber wriggled into her bedroll and was reminded of Mister Wiggle’s presence when she put her head down and felt him as a squishy, fluffy lump under her skull.
She pulled him out and looked at him again. Funny, that; they’d all lost their home today, and here she was carrying a little piece of it that she thought she had left behind a long time ago.
She didn’t get much time to think about it, though.
“C’mere, dork.”
And there, as expected, was a Nikki-snuggle. Followed a second or so later by a Roy-snuggle from the other side.
Okay. She had brought at least two other bits of home with her as well as the rabbit. There was going to be a lot of hardship ahead of them, and that was just the trip to Newhome in the launch. Probably they were in for years of hardship after that. Founding a colony wasn’t going to be easy, not even with all the equipment and supplies they were carrying down with them.
But the thought that chased Amber down into a surprisingly restful and relaxing sleep was that she was looking forward to what was coming.
Did you enjoy it? As I said at the beginning, we intend to publish the entire story free-to-read over the coming months. That said, if you're impatient…

You could order the eBook from Amazon, and skip the wait. There's a hardcover and paperback version available too. It's also available from Indiebound, Barnes and Noble, and can be ordered at any local bookstore by ISBN: 978-17358787-0-6 for the hardcover, 978-17358787-2-0 if you prefer paperback.

In any case, we're simply happy to share the story with you, and we think you'll like it very much indeed.
Anyway. Thank you very much for your attention and time. It means a lot to me, it really does.
Thank you.

2020.11.27 13:48 SuperHotUKDeals Vodafone 5G Sim Only - Unlimited 5G Data, Minutes and Texts £23pm (£288 Cashback - effective £11pm - 24mo - No Speed Cap) @ Fonehouse

The following description is not provided by this sub or any of it's contributors.
£552 - Fonehouse
The Vodafone offers continue, with the Unlimited Max plan getting the attention this time. Unlimited 5G data with NO speed restriction, unlimited minutes and texts for £23 per month before cashback.
£288 cashback drops the effective cost to £11 per month on a 24 month contract (cheeky)
What else do you get?
No Cap on Data Speed
Get speeds as fast as your device will allow with no speed caps from Vodafone! This includes 5G speeds at no extra cost (5G device required).
Roam in 48 Countries
Vodafone Global Roaming allows you to use your minutes, texts and data allowance included in your plan for free in 48 countries
5G Ready Plan
If you are purchasing a 5G Ready device, this plan provides you 5G at no extra cost! Even if you decide to change to a 5G device in the future, there is no need to update your plan, it will automatically switch to 5G where 5G coverage is available. (5G Device required)
Very Me Rewards
Enjoy free gifts, exclusive discounts and tailor made offers with the Vodafone VeryMe App. Download the app to start enjoying the benefits, exclusive to Vodafone customers.
Tethering Enabled
With personal hotspot you can use your existing data allowance to connect other devices to your phone and get them online for free. This is called tethering. It is great for other devices when there is no available WiFi.
Claiming Cashback
It’s super simple to claim your cashback. All that’s required is your network bill and your Fonehouse account. Just login into your account and click the button titled ‘Claim Cashback’.
A form will be pulled up, asking you to fill in your order number, name. email address, date of birth, network, telephone number and bill date. You’ll also be asked to include a PDF download of your relevant bill then simply enter the details you gave when you placed the order and submit your claim. You’ll get an email shortly confirming your claim has been submitted successfully.
If you have any issues when trying to claim, you can contact customer services who will be able to help rectify the problems.
When to Claim
The dates you claim differ depending on which contract you have taken out however, they are both claimed in the same way. Redemption cashback is paid in 5 equal instalments throughout the duration of your contract.
You will need to download and submit bills which can be downloaded from your online account with the network, not Fonehouse.
If you’ve decided to order a 24-month contract, you need to submit bills 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18. The claim must be submitted within 60 days of the bill being received.
If you never want to miss a claim, you can set reminders on your current mobile phone.
Cashback Time Frames
Each time you submit your cashback claim, Fonehouse process the submitted bill within 14 days. Successful claims will be paid directly into your bank account within 21 days.
Cashback is paid via BACs into the bank details you give on the order. If your details change, please update us so we can pay the cashback with ease.
Reasons of Rejection
There are a few reasons claims could be rejected however, they are really easy to avoid.
If your bill is submitted outside the 60-day period, your claim could be rejected. If you submit the bill as soon as you receive it, this won’t be a problem.
You won’t be eligible to cashback if your pay monthly contract has been canceled. You must be paying your monthly bills to receive payment.
The tariff you order from Fonehouse must be the tariff for the duration of the contract. If this is at all altered, your cashback claims may be denied. Cashback is specific to each deal and we are unable to edit the amount between different tariffs.
You need to make sure that all details you enter on the cashback claim form match the details we have on the order for you. Your claim may be rejected if this information doesn’t match our system. If any of your details change, please call our customer service line to update these.
If you submit the wrong bill date on the cashback claim form, you risk your cashback being rejected. As long as you follow the above cashback claim dates, the bill will be correct. Just double check that the bill date you enter on the form matches the date shown on the network bill.
Cashback really is as simple a couple clicks and a reminder however. more information can be found in our FAQs (https://www.fonehouse.co.uk/faq). If there are problems with your cashback, you’ll receive an email. If you have any other questions, our customer service team is on hand to answer them.

For Shiny Marked Pokemons, depending on the rarity of desired mark and the rarity of Pokemon encounter, price will range from $15-70. Shoot your shot! Note that I cannot aim for a specific mark but more of a mark rarity tier (1 in 25, 1 in 50, 1 in 100; 1 in 1000 is probably impossible to get and I will keep it for myself, unless you are willing to go for $100++ range). It will probably take up to 2 weeks to complete an order if it is a difficult hunt. You can request a rare ball too, I have a ton of every ball (excluding Beast ball, unless you are comfortable with me buying some hacked ones & charging a bit more due to the low catch rate).
Proof will also be a screen recording from capturing the pokemon to its summary page showing the mark (captured using the Switch recording function). If you have a suggestion on how to improve, definitely tell me!
CURRENTLY NOT hunting any. Order away :)
Pokemon Go Shiny Mythicals:
Shiny Genesect (Level 20, Premier Ball, IV 23/25/31/25/31/x)
Shiny Darkrai (Level 20, Premier Ball, IV 21/21/21/21/21/x)
OT: CustomID: Random
You can ask for any kind of proof you want, I still have all on my Pokemon Go account.
Going for $45 + fees each. Do understand that I might have to wait for cooldown for 7 days after a deal, unless you are willing to pay + $10 for me to recharge the energy. Currently on cooldown for 5 days.
Trade in Pokemon Home for Darkrai and SwSh for Genesect
Shiny Melmetals:
OT: Minh ID No. 480883 Self obtained from Pokemon Go, 5 transferred to Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu. 2 unevolved still in Pokemon Go.
5 Shiny Melmetals inside the Go Park Complex in Let's Go Pikachu. You have the choice between Premier Ball, Pokeball, Great Ball, Ultra Ball, Masterball. I can teach them Toxic and Earthquake, too. You can also request a nature.
Can provide proof of capture from Go Park, or evolution and transfer proof on the one on Pokemon Go (*need to wait for me to collect candies)
Price: $25 + fees. You may request specific speed IVs, but the price will be $30 and I will catch the pokemon with a Master Ball. It takes a lot of time to catch and check the IVs.

TOFTT!? 2+ weeks (so far) with the Dell G7
https://preview.redd.it/uatvu47kkr161.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e92d3ae76882fa6b7c9b38b993fb1283dccf33f6
I bought the Dell G7 about 2 weeks ago (this one: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-g7-17-3-300hz-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-2070-max-p-512gb-ssd-rgb-keyboard-black/6416473.p?skuId=6416473). So far it's been great. It does get warm, in the center mostly, but nothing 'hot' or anything that would make using the keyboard uncomfortable. Fans kick in at full speed when gaming, well I mean when I play Fortnite, the only game I play, but it runs really well. I get high 100s, low 200s throughout matches (solos, squads, TR). Everything else is totally functional so far. I slowly let it update itself (Windows, Dell, Geforce, etc.). The only hitch I encountered was when I updated the Nvidia drivers. The latest build gave me stutters and less fps. I didn't note down what drivers this laptop shipped with so I had to go around trying different drivers until I found the one that worked best. So far its 446.14. Everything else has updated fine without issue. The BIOS did update itself through the Dell software a few days ago (from 1.3 to 1.5) and so far still no issues with thermals or throttling, but again, I'm only playing Fortnite. I'm also a musician and do all of my own recording and mixing so this will also be used for that (it should have no problem though, my cheap-o laptop actually didn't struggle much with audio production), and I'm getting into video editing so will also be doing that on this. Now all of the software this laptop shipped with dates back to September. IIRC this laptop came out in early 2020, so I guess the newer shipments maybe have better QC?
TL;DR - Current Dell G7 laptops (September and beyond) have better QC?

2020.11.27 03:27 GabrielBinette I'm looking to get in touch with the right people who can make use of the information I have documented of a flying saucer craft.

I'm looking to get in touch with the right people who can make use of the information I have documented of a flying saucer craft.
I'm looking for ways to contact agency's that can make use of the information I have recorded of a couple incidents concerning a daytime flying saucer in a major city. It appeared near the international airport as well as raytheon, and general dynamics Canada.
It looked like a bronze and silver courogated lampshade with a glowing gold or yellow cone on the top. It did't reflect sunlight and had no lights, it was a solid object that popped in did some insane CNC looking manoeuvres without acceleration or deceleration at a steady constant speed. Stopped on a dime then faded away. The whole event took about 3 seconds. This happened in the middle of a large city near an international airport, Raytheon, and general dynamics Canada.
I hope this story can reach the right person so that I can answer some questions of my own one day. if anyone can help me pass this story on to someone that might be that kind of person I would greatly appreciate it.
I documented some files of the incident that took place in 2008 in Calgary, AB, Canada. I live in Canada, However I'm unaware of a Canadian equivalent to the UAPTF. The UAPTF is a very recent program, that is why I have decided to post this now.
The Folder Contains
My main goal is to gain more insight into what occurred, and learn more. I have the overwhelming sense that I may never achieve this goal.
My personal feelings are of crushing disappointment at my own failure and inability learn more about this situation or others like it. My apologies in advance for wasting anyone's time here, that is not my intent.
Thank you for Reading this, as well as for your time and consideration.

2020.11.27 02:57 gxsolace LG CX common problems and solutions

Figured I'd start this since I keep encountering the same questions often in multiple forums and on Reddit. Hopefully this helps people.
Q: I can't enable 120Hz at 4K even though I have the right cable specs with NVIDIA 30-series. A: NVIDIA Control Panel / Change resolution / Resolution > scroll down to "PC" section, select 3840 x 2160 > Refresh rate > 120 Hz. If you use the TV resolutions "Ultra HD, HD, SD" in the menu, only 60Hz will be available to you.
Q: I use my CX with a computer that has an NVIDIA 30-series graphics card and see blurry/colored fringing on text. A: You must set your CX's corresponding HDMI input to "PC Mode." Press the HOME button on your remote control. Click HOME DASHBOARD. Click the "gear" icon on the top right. Click "EDIT". Click the icon of the HDMI connection your PC is attached to and scroll down the list and change it to PC. Save.
Q: When I am in "PC Mode" so many image options are unavailable. A: This is normal behavior.
Q: I get screen flashing, corruption, blackouts. A: It is most likely cable. Test with different cables.
Q: I get horizontal lines. A: It is most likely cable. Test with different cables.
Q: How do I know a cable is certified to be HDMI 2.1? A: Certified cables will have a QR Code/Hologram sticker on their packaging and be labeled "UHS" on the cable's outer jacket. The QHologram can be scanned using a mobile app from HDMI.org. At this current time, not many exist. The official allowable marketing name for cable manufacturers is "Ultra High Speed," and not "Ultra HD High Speed" or any other variation. However, many have reported success with the Zeskit brand of cables, even though it is currently labeled as "Ultra HD High Speed." Club 3D's CAC-1372 series cable are officially certified. More information can be found here: https://hdmi.org/spec21sub/ultrahighspeedcable
Q: Is there a way to test for certain that my cable can do HDMI 2.1? A: Yes. If you have a model year 2020 receiver from Denon, Marantz, or Yamaha, they have a feature that allows you to plug your cable into one of the receiver's inputs and its output and run a bandwidth test. (credit: Vincent Teoh, of HDTVTest on YouTube)
Q: I have horizontal lines even in LG native apps on the TV. A: It is a hardware problem with your TV. Contact LG.
Q: I sometimes have flashing white vertical lines when playing games on my RTX 30-series card. A: This is a known firmware issue. It should be resolved with firmware 03.11.30. This is a problem related to near 120FPS in 4K/120Hz with GSYNC and looks like this: https://youtu.be/WhFBrkjO140 (credit: @DontNerfMeBr0)
Q: The screen dims noticeably when I have a large bright image appear. A: This is a normal automatic brightness limiter function of your CX and is meant to save you from OLED damage. The algorithm is known to be aggressive at this current time.
Q: I see slight vertical bands down my screen in very dark scenes or when viewing dark gray images, is my screen broken? A: Unfortunately, no two consumer OLED panels are the same and this faint banding in very dark images is normal for consumer-grade OLEDs at this time.
Q: I keep hearing the term "crushed blacks." What is it? Is it a problem? A: It depends. Crushed blacks is often used artistically to lower the luminosity of black areas to increase the contrast of the final image or scene. In the case of your CX, OLED panels can "crush blacks" due to the nature of the technology, where the voltage required to turn on an OLED pixel from off-state to just above black can be large. In this instance, if the pixel receives a value between off-state (pure black) and the minimum on state (very dark gray), the pixel may jump to off-state, thereby "crushing" the blacks, or maker them "blacker" than they were intended to be. This phenomenon is more noticeable on OLED panels compared to backlit LED panels because backlit LEDs panels cannot achieve true blacks.
Q: I upgraded to the latest public firmware and people said its suppose to fix flickering. I'm still seeing flickering in games with lots of dark areas. A: The fix is for other issues. You are experiencing near-black gamma shift, which is a known issue and is still under investigation by LG. No known fix has been announced. A temporary workaround is to turn off VRGSYNC. Near-black gamma shift looks like this: https://imgur.com/a/Rw2mmHS (credit @iiBoyley)
Q: I can't pass through 4K/120Hz from my device through my receiver to my CX. A: If you have a model year 2020 receiver from Marantz, Denon, or Yamaha, they currently have an HDMI 2.1 bug that is under investigation. There is no fix at this time. Plug your device directly into TV and use eARC to send audio back from your TV to your receiver.
Q: I can't get a proper signal from my Xbox Series X going from my receiver to my CX. A: Plug your Xbox Series X directly into the CX and use eARC to send audio back from your TV to your receiver. The Xbox Series X uses HDMI 2.1 with compression (DSC). Your receiver (assuming an HDMI 2.1 receiver from the list of vendors above) currently only process uncompressed HDMI 2.1 signals.
Q: Turning on my game console, the TV turns on but doesn't switch to the correct input. A: All settings / General / Additional Settings > Disable "Quick Start+". Then, All Settings / Connection / Device Connection > Enable "SIMPLINK". This is a known firmware bug and may be fixed in a later firmware update.
Q: I can't get eARC working on my Apple TV 4K. A: It is a known problem. A firmware fix is in progress.
Q: I bought a CX screen because it supports 120Hz. I cannot get above 60Hz from my PlayStation 4 Pro or Xbox One X. A: 120Hz is only supported on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Q: The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20-series card I have did 120Hz on my gaming monitor. It's not showing up on my new CX. A: You must have an RTX 30-series card to use 4K 120Hz at chroma 444 or 442 on the CX. Your RTX 20-series only supports 4K 120Hz over HDMI at chroma 420, which may hurt image quality. (edited for clarity; credit: claychastain)
Q: When I wake my PC up from screen sleep state and/or turn TV on the TV indicates a blank signal. A: This is a bug in firmware. Flipping "FreeSync Premium" on/off or off/on will re-establish HDMI link.
Q: When I use OLED Motion Pro, I can't get 24p content to be completely judder free. A: Enabling Real Cinema will completely remove judder from all content. OLED Motion Pro judder adjustments will not completely remove judder.
Q: I have Picture-in-Picture ("Multiview") on my C9. How do I get PIP on my CX? A: Unfortunately PIP is not available on the CX.
Q: I customized all my picture settings and they were wiped when I turned on HDR mode in Windows. A: The CX considers SDR and HDR two intendent modes even on the same HDMI device. You must set your customizations again for HDR. Your SDR settings are still saved.
Q: How do I see current refresh screen status on my CX? A: Mash the GREEN button on your remote several times. Exit by pressing the RETURN button.
Q: In the screen status, I see "VRR" and not "GSYNC". A: This is normal. VRR stands for Variable Refresh Rate and indicates you have GSYNC enabled or the open standard HDMI Forum VRR enabled.
Q: In the screen status, I see my refresh rate at 5.5Hz or lower but my screen is clearly running at 120Hz. A: This is a cosmetic bug in the CX firmware and otherwise your refresh rate is functioning normally.
Q: The image displayed on my CX is very slightly off edge on one or more sides of my display. A: This is normal behavior with Screen Shift on. It is meant to mitigate burn-in. You can disable it if it bothers you.
Q: I went to Check for Updates but I am not getting indication of new firmware available while everyone else seems to be getting it. A: LG is rolling out firmware updates in phases, by date of manufacture and region. Keep checking back. Sometimes hitting Check for Updates multiple times or rebooting your TV and trying again works.
Q: I updated to a newer public firmware and now I have flickering, blackouts, image issues. I want to rollback to a previous firmware. A: You cannot. Check your cable and test with a different cable, even if it worked previously.
Q: I used a service remote and updated to an engineering firmware. I want to rollback to a public firmware. A: You cannot. You must wait until LG releases a public firmware with a revision number higher than the engineering firmware you are currently on.
Q: I am on a problematic engineering firmware. Is there an engineering firmware that I can update to that is at least as stable as the public one? A: 03.31.08 (currently Engineering only).
Q: My TV is not finding the latest publicly available firmware. A: Download it from LG's website. Unzip the file. Place the file onto a FAT32 formatted USB stick, inside a folder called LG_DTV. Insert USB stick into any USB port on your CX. A notification will pop up asking if you want to install the new firmware.
Q: How do I get a service remote to enter secret menus on my CX? A: You are on your own. You can use Google or search this subreddit for information. Adjustments made through the service remote and its results are entirely on you and may void your warranty with LG.
Q: How can I tell when my CX was manufactured? A: The first three digits of your serial number will tell you. The first digit is the year (0 being 2020) and the second two digits are the month. 010 for example indicates manufactured in 2020, October.
Q: Is a later manufacturing date better than an earlier date? A: Not necessarily. Sometimes some hardware issues are fixed, and sometimes it's known as a cost-down revision, where cheaper parts are used to reduce manufacturing costs.
Q: Where can I find recommended settings for my CX? A: https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/cx-oled/settings - Do not rely on copying calibration settings as every panel is different and you may end up with worse image quality depending on your individual panel.
Q: What white balance setting can I use if I don't want to mess with calibration or fine adjustments? A: "WARM2" will give you the setting that's closest to CIE Standard Illuminant D65 and is considered the most accurate setting achievable without professional calibration. For movies, FILMMAKER MODE is a preset that will provide you results designed to match "artistic intent" in relation to Hollywood movie color mastering standards.
