2020.10.20 20:15 darkdane I need advice about authenticating document for a Z visa

I'm from America and I lived in China for a few years on a student visa until I graduated last year. I planned to return to China this year to teach English, but the coronavirus outbreak started right before I was about to receive my work permit and apply for my work visa. I'm in Florida and I had a lot of trouble last year finding up-to-date information on getting my documents authenticated and applying for the visa, but I eventually found a visa service near the Houston consulate that was able to get my documents authenticated for me and would have helped with the visa too if it wasn't for the virus.
I heard that last month China started allowing foreigners into the country again, so I contacted the school in China to start the application for the work permit again. Unfortunately, I found out my noncriminal record was only good for 6 months and I need to get a new one and have it authenticated again. According to the Chinese embassy website the Houston consulate had jurisdiction over Florida, but I heard that location was closed a few months ago by the US government. I contacted the visa service that helped me last year and it sounded like they can still help me authenticate my document, but it would probably take around 3 months (compared to ~2 weeks last time for 3 documents) which is much longer than I was hoping for considering that after I get the document back the school still needs to apply for my work permit and then I need to apply for the visa.
Does anyone have any advice for how I can get my document authenticated quicker so that I can apply for my visa sooner? Would I be better off trying to handle the authentication myself or using a visa service again? I was very confused about how to handle the authentication last year so it really helped that the visa service could do it all for me. I'm also in Florida so there is no embassy/consulate nearby and I'm not even sure which location has jurisdiction here now that the Houston consulate is closed. Should I contact other visa services to see if they can do it faster, and if so does it matter which embassy/consulate they use? Last year I chose the visa service I used because they were right by the Houston consulate and had good reviews and reasonable prices.
I'd really appreciate any advice that anyone can offer. I had enough trouble last year finding up-to-date information and figuring out what to do, but now it's even more confusing with the virus and because the consulate that has jurisdiction here is closed. It would be especially helpful if anyone has a visa service they could recommend that would be able to get my document authenticated quickly (please DM it to me if you're not allowed to post it in the comments).

New Zealand

Andrews response to the 17 passengers from NZ who entered Melbourne:
Firstly, you would be aware that at around 5.30 yesterday evening, 17 people from New Zealand, having travelled on an international flight from New Zealand to Sydney, were then allowed to board a plane and travel to Melbourne. They didn't spend very long at the airport. They left the airport within only minutes, really, of having arrived. Our officers have absolutely no power to stop someone, to detain someone in those circumstances, particularly given they were coming from a very low virus part of the world. New Zealand is and we're very pleased for them, in a very different set of circumstances to the circumstances that we are in in Victoria.
We are still waiting - I am not sure why we're waiting, but we are still waiting for Australian Border Force to provide us with the passenger cards for each of those 17 people. As soon as we get that detail, we will be visiting each of those people and making sure that they are fully up to date, as it were, when it comes to the rules, the regulations, the structures that we have in Victoria. They need to be briefed on those things so they are doing the right thing. I am not sure that any of them would necessarily need to be tested. But just giving them the benefit of a clear understanding of what is required in Victoria, whether you're from Victoria or not, is very, very important.
I want to be clear on this I have written to the Prime Minister this morning and we're disappointed this has happened given that I had written to the Prime Minister on this very issue the previous day, saying at some point we will join that New Zealand/Australia travel bubble but it is not appropriate now. This is effectively possible because we haven't closed our border I don't think these people could have travelled domestically into other states where borders are closed. That is what the Prime Minister wants. We have done that and now we see 17 people turning up on our doorstep without any notice, without any structure and we still can't get the cards from Australian Border Force as to who these people are and where they have gone. Hopefully we will get that very soon.
I have written this morning to make it plain, there is more flights coming on Sunday from New Zealand and we don't want a repeat of this, where people, albeit not having a go at the 17 people, or whoever might seek to come to Victoria or Melbourne on Sunday but surely it is not beyond those who are responsible for the borders of our nation making sure that only those who are in the New Zealand bubble, can receive domestic passengers after they have arrived into an international airport. I am confident we will get to the bottom of this by the end of the day and we will be in contact with each of those people and make sure they know and fully understand the rules and what they have to do, masks and through to the reasons to leave your home and so on and so forth.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How can I check where I'm registered?

Harris County
Fort Bend County
Other counties in Texas
If you recently registered, it may take a few weeks for your information to show up in the system. If you are absolutely sure you registered to vote, but you're not listed on the website, you can ask for a provisional ballot at the voting location. The attendants can provide this. This is a special ballot that will be manually checked for eligibility. Not a big deal, just an extra step.

When does voting start?

Early voting starts October 13 in all Texas counties. Early voting ends October 30th. At that point you will need to wait until November 3rd.

What is the last day to vote?

November 3rd. You must be in line by 7pm.

How late do the polls stay open?

On Election Day (November 3rd): Polls open at 7am and close at 7pm. You must be in line by 7pm to vote. If you're in line and the polls close, you will still be allowed to vote.
Early voting hours vary by location, check your county's voting website for hours. Some locations in Harris County will be open 24 hours but only on Oct 29 https://abc13.com/harris-county-early-voting-polling-locations-houston-2020-politics/6419064/

For other counties, see the election websites at the top of this post.

Do I need ID to vote?

You will be asked to show ID but you can still vote without it.
Valid forms of ID: TX Drivers License, TX Election ID Certificate, TX Personal Identification Card, TX Handgun License, Military ID with photo, US Citizenship Certificate with photo, US Passport.
All ID forms are valid within 4 years of expiration.
If you don't have ID you can still vote, but you'll need to jump through some hoops.
If you don't have ID and cannot obtain one due to a reasonable impediment, you'll need to sign a sworn statement that there is a reason why you don't have any of the accepted IDs, and present one of the following: certified birth certificate; valid voter registration certificate; or a current utility bill, government check, bank statement or paycheck, or government document with your name and an address. If you meet these requirements and are eligible to vote, you may vote in the election.
If you don't have ID and do not have a reasonable impediment to obtaining one or did not bring ID to the polling place, you may cast a provisional ballot. In order to have the provisional ballot counted, you will be required to visit the voter registrar's office within six (6) calendar days of the date of the election to either present one of the forms of photo ID or submit a temporary affidavit, or, if applicable, qualify for the disability exemption, in the presence of the county voter registrar while attesting to the fact that you do not have any of the required photo IDs.

I moved recently, where can I vote?

Early Voting can be done at any polling place in the county listed on your registration.
If you are registered in the following counties, you may vote anywhere within that county on Election Day: Harris, Brazoria, Liberty, Fort Bend, Galveston.
Montgomery, Waller and Chambers counties still require you to vote in the precinct listed on your registration.
If you've moved to or from a different county, but forgot to re-register, there's still a way to vote
LIMITED BALLOT OPTION: If you have moved to a new county and have not re-registered in the new county by the October 5, 2020 deadline, you may be eligible to vote a limited ballot in your new county. A limited ballot means that you would be allowed to vote on any candidates and measures in common between your former and new county. This procedure is only available during the early voting period at the main early voting polling place; you may NOT vote a limited ballot on election day. You must be a current registered voter in your former county in order to qualify OR you must have been registered in your old county at the time you submitted a voter registration application in your new county, if you have done so. For full information on this procedure (including the by-mail option, if qualified to vote by mail), go to Special Forms of Early Voting. If you feel you qualify to vote a limited ballot, we recommend that you contact the office of the Early Voting Clerk in your new county.

How does early voting work?

You can take advantage of early voting anywhere in the county you're registered. Just walk in and vote like normal. It's usually far less crowded and a very quick process. A very good option if you're worried about COVID 19.

Do I need to request a ballot ahead of the election?

Probably not. The only scenario that requires you to request a ballot ahead of time is mail-in voting (see the next question below for details). Normal voting, early voting, drive thru voting and provisional voting DO NOT require you to request a ballot. Ballots will be provided at the voting location.

Can I vote by mail?

To vote by mail you must:
be 65 years or older; or be disabled; or be out of the county on election day and during the period for early voting by personal appearance; or be confined in jail, but otherwise eligible.
To apply for a mail in ballot go to: https://www.sos.texas.gov/elections/votereqabbm.shtml
Your application for a ballot must be received by local voting officials by October 23.

I got a mail in ballot but I want to vote in person instead. What do I do?

Don't fill out your mail in ballot. Leave it blank. Take it with you to the poll and tell the attendants you would like to vote in person instead.

I never received (or lost) my voter registration card. Can I still vote?

Yes. See above for acceptable forms of ID. You will still need to vote in the correct county and precinct listed on your registration.

How do I use the voting machine?

Here's an instructional video from Harris County.
https://youtu.be/nhxga80cdII
This is the type of voting machine used in Fort Bend County
https://www.essvote.com/blog/video/video-expressvote-how-to-vote/

Can I bring notes with me?

Yes. Handwritten or printed notes on paper can be brought with you. You cannot read notes off your phone.

Can I bring my phone with me?

If it's silent and in your pocket the entire time, you're fine. You can't look at your phone or pull it out while at the polling place or voting machine.

I see something weird at my polling location. This doesn't look right... What do I do? Is this legal?

By law, you are allowed to vote without discrimination or coercion. Campaign workers cannot approach you or speak to you within 100 feet of the poll. There's usually a line or a sign marking how far they have to stand from the door. Poll workers cannot ask you which candidate or party you're voting for.
If you have a complaint or a concern, immediately tell the poll workers. Ask to speak to an election judge if possible. These people can help you the fastest. If they can't answer your question, or you don't feel comfortable talking to them, call your county's election office

Opening Speech
Mr Deputy Speaker,
I am very proud to have worked on this bill making common sense technical amendments to the Freedom of Information Act. I would like to thank the co-sponsors of this bill, and I would also like to thank the several Conservative Party members who I consulted with while writing this legislation in order to make it as cross party friendly as possible.
Ill now provide a quick rundown of what the bill does.
The first section does two things. First, it removes an indefinite deadline on getting back to requestors as to whether or not the information is sensitive. In the status quo, there are multiple steps one has to take to get access to contested information. In the current bill, authorities can take quite literally indefinite time periods to process claims that information is too sensitive to be released. This puts a deadline on this process, so requestors know where they stand.
It also allows for longer deadlines for prosecution on FOIA violations. Oftentimes the investigation that takes place that leads to prosecution takes so long that the time limit expires. This allows that limit to be wavered if it is determined that more time was needed.
Similarly, the next provision puts deadlines on internal reviews. Those who use the act deserve timely responses to complaints, and this bill allows that to be done while providing adequate time for such investigations to occur.
The bill also creates a disclosure process. Important to understanding the FOIA’s implementation is the collection of information on the FOIA itself, not just information one can access due to the FOIA existing. There will now be public statistics that allow authorities to compare and contrast with one another.
The next provision clears up ambiguous wording, setting up clear and concise standards derived from expert opinions and case law as to what requests need be complied with.
The following section protects internal deliberation from being used to manipulate the external political process.
The final section is important. People in this house do not always agree on what extent the state needs to carry out services. But what I think we can all agree on is if these services are provided privately, they should be held to similar standards. If a service is being provided that would otherwise be FOIA eligible, but isn’t due to it being contracted out, a real chance for public accountability is lost.
I hope this bill passes, and I commend it to this house.

2020.10.14 22:58 AndyJPuente Biggest 2020 NBA free-agency, draft and trade decisions for the Denver Nuggets:

Offseason focus
Draft assets
Cap space breakdown
Team needs
Extension eligible: Monte Morris, Jerami Grant, Will Barton, Gary Harris and Keita Bates-Diop
Free-agent status

How to prioritize their own free agents

Among Grant, Plumlee, Craig and Millsap, we should expect an odd man (or two) out when it comes to Denver's free-agent decisions. That's no certainty, because all four have established Early Bird or Bird rights, allowing the Nuggets to exceed the $109.1 million salary cap to sign them.
However, because the Nuggets have $95 million in guaranteed salary for Jokic, Murray, Harris, Barton and Porter, Denver will need to balance its cap ledger to avoid the $132.7 million luxury tax. The last time the Nuggets paid the tax was during the 2009-10 season.
One way to look at the finances is that Denver has a $29 million budget to split among some or all of the four players. If Jerami Grant opts into his $9.3 million contract, that number shrinks to $20 million.
Of the four, Grant is the priority to bring back. In addition to his talent, the 26-year-old forward has three attributes teams crave: versatility, durability and the willingness to accept a role.
Known primarily as a power forward, he can slide down to small forward, and on the defensive end, he has the rare ability to guard all five positions. Since the 2015-16 season, Grant has missed only nine games to injury.
At the very minimum, the market should see the forward's salary start at the $9.3 million midlevel exception (his current salary). Because Grant is still in his prime, he can gamble and sign a one-year contract (with Denver or another team) and enter free agency in the summer of 2021, when the market should open up with more teams that have cap flexibility.
Signing Grant would make Millsap expendable unless he is willing to take a reduced role as a bench player at a salary of $4-6 million. But for contending teams, Millsap is a good candidate for the $9.3 million midlevel exception or a portion of it -- so elsewhere is where we might see the 35-year-old next season.
Plumlee has anchored the second unit as a reliable backup to Jokic. His price range going forward should be $4-6 million. As for Craig, where does he find minutes when Barton and Harris are healthy?
One thing to keep in mind is that even allowing all four players to leave would not give the Nuggets cap flexibility. While they would not be in danger of the luxury tax, Denver would be right at the cap and have only the $9.3 million midlevel and $3.6 million biannual exceptions available. So expect Denver to try to work out a deal with at least two or three of them.
There is also the question of how much the Nuggets trust Porter in an expanded role. He played at an All-Star level during the seeding games, then struggled at times in the playoffs, primarily on the defensive end. He's an elite scorer, but needs to improve his defense to justify a major role. If the Nuggets have doubts, they'll need Grant and/or Millsap to stay.

Offseason cap breakdown

Including the Grant player option, Denver has $113 million in salary, $4 million over the projected $109 million salary cap.
Expect the Nuggets to act as a team over the salary cap even if Grant leaves and they do not sign their other free agents. Staying over would allow them to use the $9.3 million midlevel and $3.6 million biannual exceptions.

The resources available to build the roster

Dates to watch

Restrictions

Extension candidates

Extending backup point guard Monte Morris should be on the to-do list for the Nuggets. Morris will become an unrestricted free agent in 2021 without a new deal because a quirk in the CBA credits Morris with a year of service from when he signed a two-way contract in 2017.
Morris in his two years as the primary backup to Jamal Murray has not missed a game to injury and has been a consistent contributor, averaging 22 minutes, 9 points and 3.5 assists. Once his 2020-21 contract becomes guaranteed, the Nuggets can extend him for as much as an additional four seasons and $51 million. A realistic contract for the former second-round pick should be similar to the three-year, $27 million deal that backup D.J. Augustin signed with Orlando in 2017.
When I began this analysis, I included a section above for a Will Barton contract extension based on his strong season: 15 points per game, 6.3 rebounds and a career-best 37.5% shooting from 3-point range. But because of a knee injury that knocked him out of the restart and playoffs, the Nuggets now need to be cautious. Barton is extension-eligible until the day before the regular season begins for an additional three years and up to $57 million in new money.
Harris, Bates-Diop and Grant (if he opts in) are also extension-eligible. Since signing a four-year, $74 million extension in 2017, Harris has missed 46 games because of injury and did not play in the playoffs after suffering an injured hip.

The draft assets

The Nuggets' 2020 first that was traded to acquire Grant from Oklahoma City was replaced at the trade deadline -- as part of the trade that sent Malik Beasley and Juancho Hernangomez to Minnesota, Denver has the Rockets' first in October.
Here is how Jonathan Givony and Mike Schmitz have the Nuggets selecting in the draft:
• No. 22 (via HOU) Aleksej Pokusevski Olympiakos B F
• No. 45 (own) Skylar Mays LSU PG/SG
The Nuggets have their own firsts for all future years.

2020.10.14 20:17 AndyJPuente Biggest 2020 NBA free-agency, draft and trade decisions for the Los Angeles Lakers

Offseason focus
Draft assets
Cap space breakdown
Team needs
Extension eligible: Anthony Davis, LeBron James and Kyle Kuzma (rookie)
Free-agent status

The Anthony Davis contract

The Lakers' acquisition of Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans was high risk, high reward.
Here is the price tag:
Adding to the risk: Davis could opt to become a 2020 free agent. With potential free agency looming for both Davis (in 2020 or 2021) and James (2021 or 2022), there would be no guarantee that either player would be on the roster for the 2022-23 season. In that case, both the Lakers' roster and their stock of draft picks would be bereft.
But as Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka told ESPN's Dave McMenamin, when James committed to the Lakers in 2018, it was Pelinka's job to put a championship roster around James even if that meant trading away draft picks and young players.
"When a player of LeBron's stature puts his trust in the organization," Pelinka said, "I think there's an implicit bilateral trust going back, saying: 'We're going to do everything we can to put you in a position to win more championships, because that's what you're about.'"
Fortunately for Los Angeles, Davis put together his most complete season, racking up honors along the way: being named first-team All-NBA and first-team All-Defensive, and finishing second in Defensive Player of the Year voting and fifth in MVP voting.
Furthermore, the risk of the Davis trade is now largely canceled out by the ultimate reward: an NBA championship.
Still, Davis is all but certain to opt out of his $28.8 million contract for 2020-21.
The decision would be financially motivated and not an indication that Davis will look elsewhere when free agency begins. There is no reason to believe Davis would spurn the chance to win another championship with the Lakers to sign with a lottery team such as Atlanta, Detroit or New York -- the three teams projected to have cap space for a maximum-salary player such as Davis.
The opportunity Davis would be taking advantage of is getting a raise for next season and establishing security. If the salary cap stays at $109.1 million, he can receive $32.7 million next season rather than the $28.8 million on his current contract.
Beyond that, Davis and his agent, Rich Paul, will make a decision on the length of his next contract. Here are three ways for them to go:

The LeBron James extension

James continues to produce at an MVP level at age 35.
Instead of seeing a deterioration in his overall game 17 seasons in his NBA career, James continues to produce at not just an All-Star level, but an All-NBA and MVP clip.
James also is arguably the most durable star in the league. Since entering the NBA in 2003-04, James has played in 92.5% of regular-season games.
James still has two years left on his contract (at $39.2 and $41.0 million) but is eligible to receive an extension.
Because of the over-38 rule, the Lakers can extend him for only two seasons beyond 2021-22. (This assumes his player option for 2021-22 is removed, keeping him in Los Angeles.) The max salary under current expectations would be $43.0 and $46.5 million.
The extension would start in 2022-23.

The roster outside of LeBron and AD

A year ago, the Lakers could have handed out name tags when training camp started.
Los Angeles had signed, drafted or traded for 10 new players and three more who were returning. Only James and Kyle Kuzma were not part of the transaction game.
Now, heading into the offseason, the focus for Pelinka is on roster maintenance. The Lakers have 11 players under contract and are over the salary cap.
Besides the possible extensions for Davis and James, here is the menu of roster options (and decisions) facing the Lakers:

The player options

Including Davis, the Lakers have four players -- Kentavious Caldwell-Pope ($8.5 million), Avery Bradley ($5.0 million), JaVale McGee ($4.2 million) and Rajon Rondo ($2.7 million) -- with a player option for 2020-21.
One tendency in these situations is for role players to capitalize on the championship by entering free agency in search of a bigger payday. But this year, that appears less likely because there will probably be less spending this offseason.
Here is the available money:
  1. Cap space of $15 million-plus: Four teams
  2. $9.3 million midlevel exception: 20 teams
  3. $3.6 million biannual exception: 15 teams
  4. $5.7 million tax midlevel exception: Five teams
For some teams, such as Houston and Milwaukee, spending more than $5.7 million of their midlevel exception would impose a hard cap. Teams that rely on revenue sharing -- such as Indiana, Memphis and New Orleans -- could also be reluctant to use the full midlevel exception.
Because Caldwell-Pope has been on the Lakers' roster the past three seasons (without changing teams), he has established Bird rights. If he elects to opt out, the Lakers can sign him for up to 30% of the cap and a total of five years. The salary range for him outside of the Lakers would be $8 million to $9 million, similar to his 2020-21 player option.
Rondo and McGee have early Bird rights (allowing them 175% of their salary from the previous season or the average player salary), but the Lakers would have to commit a minimum of two years (not including an option) if they use the exception. The Lakers could sign them (and Avery Bradley) with the non-Bird rights exception and give each player a 120% raise from his 2019-20 salary.
In the case of Rondo, the maximum the Lakers could sign him for is $3 million -- a $300,000 increase from his 2020-21 player option.
In the unlikely scenario that all four players opt out and sign elsewhere, the Lakers would still not have cap space and would have only the $9.3 million midlevel, $3.6 million biannual and minimum exceptions to replace them.

Their own free agents

The Lakers' four free agents -- Markieff Morris, Jared Dudley, Dwight Howard and Dion Waiters -- signed one-year contracts and have non-Bird rights. The Lakers can sign each player to a maximum of $3 million without dipping into their midlevel or biannual exceptions.
JR Smith was signed as a substitute player, and the Lakers are allowed to sign him to the $2.7 million minimum exception.

The exceptions

The Lakers will have three roster spots (or four, if Quinn Cook is waived) open to use for their $9.3 million midlevel and $3.6 million biannual exceptions.
Using both exceptions and waiving Cook would put Los Angeles right at the projected $132.7 million luxury tax line.
Beyond Morris and Howard, here are some available names to keep an eye on:

The 2021 offseason

Next year, the Lakers could have nine free agents without having all that much flexibility.
If the roster remains intact, the Lakers might head into next offseason with only James, Davis and their 2020 first-round pick on the roster. Kuzma will be a restricted free agent.
Even with only three players under contract, the maximum money they'll have to spend if the cap stays flat at $109.1 million is $17.5 million. That number would include renouncing the free-agent hold of Kuzma.

Offseason cap breakdown

The resources available to build the roster

  1. The draft: first-round pick
  2. Cash to send out and receive in a trade
  3. Exceptions: $9.3 million midlevel and $3.6 million biannual

Dates to watch

Restrictions

Extension candidates

The decision on a Kuzma extension comes down to three factors:
  1. What is the value of preserving cap flexibility in 2021?
  2. Do the Lakers view him as part of the future?
  3. What is the value of Kuzma on the trade market?
If he is not extended, the forward will carry a $10.7 million free-agent cap hold in 2021. An extension for Kuzma decreases the Lakers' cap space next offseason. It also likely takes a potential trade of Kuzma off the table because of the poison pill restriction that would be in his contract.
Related note: Since 2016, only four players -- Larry Nance Jr., Justise Winslow, T.J. Warren and Taurean Prince -- have signed a rookie extension with a starting salary of $13 million or less, which is the category in which Kuzma would likely belong.

The draft assets

As covered above, the Lakers sent a bounty of draft assets to New Orleans in the Davis trade. They do have their own first-round pick in November and will likely retain their first in 2021.
Here's how ESPN's Jonathan Givony and Mike Schmitz have Miami selecting in the draft:
The Lakers have their own second-round picks starting in 2023.

2020.10.11 06:16 Tight_Fishing_6326 Here is a Great Website Idea To Take Advantage of.

I'll get straight to it...

Search To See If The Opportunity is There For You

If you live in a less known city in the US (or elsewhere) you may want to consider creating a website that represents your city. I did this with my own city and found huge opportunities available. You do not have to own the exact match domain name to do this. I would suggest simply Googling your city and see if there is a "Travel" website on your city. Mines did not have a specific tourist website for people interested in the city, the search result resulted in a .gov site which is pretty boring for people just moving to the city and a statewide tourism site but not for my specific city. So I created it.

Register Domain & Social Media & Building The site

I registered a hack domain similar to Baltimore.md instead of the .com and own most of the exact match social media handles to my city. When you build the site its important to know the user intent. Most visitors are interested in learning about the city or they are planning on moving there. So the content that has to be created are things like "Best hotels, Best restaurants, Things to Do, Attractions & Events". Those five topics are almost on every single travel website about a specific city (just randomly Google "houston texas" and you should see those 5 content there, maybe worded differently but still the same

Its an EverGreen Type of Website

One of the benefits of running a website like this is, it usually have decent search volumes and its pretty evergreen meaning you won't have to create too many new articles. You can search a keyword research tool to get some numbers but would definitely recommend using Google trends and set the date way back to 2004. This will allow you to see if there is a dip in people searching that city for any reason other than pandemics, riots or natural disasters etc. If its a straight line then thats a good sign. The only thing you'll have to stay ontop of are the local events, local news and upcoming holidays.

It Can Be More Than Just A Website

This is a very interesting part at least in my experience. So the Project manager of my city's BID (Business Improvement District) they basically control downtown, emailed me because they were interested in what I was doing.
Verified People/Businesses/Organization Follow Us on Instagram (blue check mark) such as:
Verified accounts follow us on Instagram along with many business owners and just cool people of the city. I've become good friends with a business lawyer of the city and an organization that create events for the city also follows our Instagram and the project manager of a luxury real estate loft, as well as local banks, gas stations and even my city's main hospital all follow my account. So its definitely given me some connections and a sense of community that regular websites don't.
On Twitter a lot of verified politicians and political groups and anyone with a political opinion tag my Twitter account. I stay away from politics so i just post images of the city but it steadily gain followers even though I haven't posted for months. So this can possibly happen to you as well, you'll just have to see.
And the last thing is you get to show support by promoting musicians, artists, writers and other talents or support a cause. It can really become beyond the internet. Its not a guarantee but if you were to be the first or only website that represent your city you can have certain influence in the city.

Monetization

Forget creating 3-4 websites to get your 7 income streams (the average income stream millionaires have). A website like this can have multiple income streams. Below are just a few I've identified.

SEO

Ranking on Google first page should be fairly easy to do because there is little to no other competition. From my experience even pages that are not optimized can rank on Google's 3rd page as soon as the website started indexing instead of being on the 60-80 pages on Google I've seen it usually start around 35th page.

Recession Proof website

Last but not least if something like Covid-19 happens and tourism have seen a decrease you can always turn the website into a news website for the city, or a city forum , or a city merchandise focused site or a city social media platform or a city real Estate website selling homes, there's just so much you can do as long as you have the city's ear. You're never completely out of luck.

I hope I provided some sort of value with this post, but more important I hope someone living in a less known city takes advantage of this opportunity.

2020.10.10 00:34 masterpiecesss Loophole around Predatory Towing in Texas

My fiancé were out on a date in May of 2019 at a restaurant close to downtown Houston (TX). We were boxing the leftovers and tipping the server when we saw our car got towed away in front of our eyes right outside of the restaurant. We immediately to the restaurant staff to stop it. They called the towing company and the vehicle storage facility trying to explain that they made a mistake; no one picked up the phone after being on hold for close to an hour. The restaurant staff mentioned that other customers have had their vehicles towed in the past.
After exhausting every avenue including the police, we were left with no choice but to take an expensive Uber to the vehicle storage facility to retrieve our vehicle. The staff at the facility were extremely rude and bullied my fiancé into tears for absolutely no reason when were just trying to explain the situation to them. After all, why would they care? They’re certainly not a customer service oriented business. I paid them the fee and got our car back.
I went to a civil court the following day and filed for a hearing to fight the towing case. I won the case after providing plenty of evidence during the court hearing. None of the other parties showed up. The judge held the property owner liable for authorizing the towing. All parties were notified by mail of the decision.
I was expecting to get a refund of the towing fee in addition to the court filing fees, which were going to be a small fraction of the physical and psychological impact of the whole experience. I waited for a few months and didn’t receive anything. I reached out to the court again to mail another notification to the accountable parties. The court mailed everyone again but nothing happened after 90 days.
After the legal period passed, I filed a case at Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation in November of 2019. They are the agency that can enforce towing court judgments. I worked with them and provided all the information including stamped court orders. They got back to me last month and said they don’t have any jurisdiction over the property owner and they can’t enforce the court’s judgment.
So, I went back to the court to ask them to change the judgement and hold the towing company liable. They refused. I reached out to 20+ attorneys in Houston to see if they would be interested to take this case. No one accepted. In fact, majority of them didn’t respond.
I’m now determined not to let this go as a matter of principle. These people have found a loophole in the system to practice predatory towing. They do this to me and to a 1000 other people and make a good profit out of it. Majority of people just pay the towing fee and don’t go to court. They won’t stop this practice until someone stands up to them. I’m asking for legal advice to see what options I have to hold these people accountable?
EDIT: The restaurant building and the parking lot in front of the restaurant is owned by a real estate company. They also own an apartment complex behind the restaurant.

2020.10.07 18:48 zydecocaine An Idiot's Guide to Riding Out a Storm

Let's get something straight right out the gate- I strongly advise anyone in the path of a storm to evacuate. If you are in an area that is under a mandatory evacuation order, leave. Listen to your local officials and the national advisories. If you are new to the Houma-Terrebonne area and this is your first storm, back out of this guide now and just listen to the local officials. There are numerous factors that you should take into account when deciding to evacuate, and my factors will likely not line up with yours. This guide is not meant to convince anyone to stay through a storm of any size. As the name implies, it is a complacent local's light-hearted take on a potentially very serious situation, with tips and tricks I've found useful for getting through the smaller and weaker systems.

ABOUT ME

What's there to say- I'm the idiot. I'm one of the stubborn fools that usually stay through the smaller storms. I've lived here my entire life, and since going out on my own in the late '90s, the only two storms that have had me evacuate were Katrina and Gustav. I have reasons that make sense (to me) as to why I rarely leave.
First and foremost- elevation, elevation, elevation. I am well within the protective levee system, and very close to a bayou. For those that don't know, bayous form natural ridges, and are typically the highest points in the area. I also built in “the good flood zone”, so flooding is not the major concern for me when it comes to storms- flooding is. And if the absolute worst case flooding scenario occurs, I have a bonus room in the attic with windows for egress. I'm only saying this because it lets you know that even in the worst case scenario I have a plan.
Second, I trust my home for certain situations. I built this home. I know it is up to code with some of the most stringent building regulations in the country (when it comes to wind load). I know that no shortcuts were taken in it's construction. And I also know it has already “proven” itself through multiple storms. I also know that when it comes to tornadoes, no house is truly safe. Tornadoes are my greatest fear when it comes to storms. So I made sure that the house had a small central room that I could retreat to in case of emergency (more later). That was always the plan.
Third, I stay informed. When a storm comes within a couple days of a possible strike, I am devouring as much information from as many sources as possible (skip to the end for some resources I use). I follow the data, not the personalities. Days in advance, I am already preparing my yard and home. If things are looking like a major system, I am doing everything I can so that I can immediately evacuate when evacuation becomes inevitable. Yet again- more planning.
You see, a plan is the most important thing you can have when it comes to preparing for a hurricane. It is absolutely vital.
The last, and most unreasonable reason I rarely evacuate is the fact that I utterly abhor the actual act of evacuating. 14 hours to Houston? Bruh, no. Want to know where I evacuated to for both Katrina and Gustav? I drove closer to New Orleans- to Donaldsonville, Louisiana. I told you I was an idiot in the first sentence.

THE CALM BEFORE

OK, so I haven't talked you into evacuating. That's too bad. Let's get you prepared as best as I can with a plan. After all, an idiot without a plan is just an idiot.
Stay Hydrated The general rule of thumb is one gallon of drinking water per person, per day, for three days. Within the last couple of decades, this area has seen multiple storms that have knocked out local infrastructure for much longer. I try to have at least a week's supply (7 gallons per person) on hand.
Bonus: Additionally, fill a bathtub with water. If you resort to using this water for consumption, boil it first. This is also the stock from which you can flush toilets. With no water pressure, a toilet won't flush. You don't want to have a toilet that won't flush.
Make Some Groceries Again, the general rule of thumb is a three day supply. And again, I aim for a week. This food should be non-perishable and shelf stable. In case of power failure, minimize the amount of times the refrigerator and freezer doors are opened. According to the FDA, a closed refrigerator should keep for about 4 hours, while freezers should last 24-48 if kept closed. I know canned food and other shelf stable foods are typically not as healthy, but hurricane calories don't count, right?
Mind Your Yard Clear all drainage systems of debris. Secure any movable outdoor items. Trampolines should either be turned upside down or dismantled. If you have small trees, tie them to stakes at three points. Inspect any trees and remove any dead or sketchy branches. If a branch is capable of striking your home, your neighbor's home, or your fence, cut it back. Secure garbage cans as well. I pull mine into the garage. I also pile everything tetris-style on the back patio, which is enclosed on three sides. When the wind picks up, any object can easily become airborne and strike your windows, or your neighbor's.
Tend Your Home Because some people are bad neighbors and don't secure their yards, don't hesitate to board up your house. From plywood to storm shutters and hurricane fabric, there are many, many options. How you do it needs to be decided far in advance. Take photos of your home for insurance purposes. This goes for items inside as well. If you are taking them with your phone, upload them to the cloud, or email them to yourself. It is not a bad idea to make digital copies of important documents and do the same. Unplug any electronics not in use. This includes garage door openers and kitchen appliances. A power surge can occur and will be expensive. If you are expecting flooding, put as many things as high off the ground as possible.
Bonus: If you are expecting flooding inside your home, there is no logical reason for you to be planning to stay.
Charge Up Charge your cell phone as well as laptops and battery banks, which can charge your phone in case of an outage. I like to keep them plugged in throughout the storm in anticipation of random outages. Insure that you have extra batteries for any portable radios, batteries or any other battery operated item.
Bonus: Go to your local hardware store and buy a set of solar yard lights. You can pick up a set for under $20 bucks. Set them outdoors in the sunlight during the day, and you'll have a great way to get light at night if the power goes out. Not only are they safer than candles, they also double as solar yard lights!
Pets Just like you, Fido and Couyon have to eat and drink. Make sure you are stocked up on supplies for them as well. Some pets don't take too kindly to thunder. There are calming treats available. On top of that, just be patient with them. If you are planning on leaving a pet outside for the storm, do Fido a favor and call the local shelter to see if they are accepting pets. Many accept pets through the duration of the storm.
Bonus: If you are planning on leaving Fido out through the storm, drop him off at the shelter regardless and never get another pet again, because you are the couyon.
Vehicles Top off your tanks before the storm. If you are expecting flooding in your yard, and if it is possible, move your vehicles to higher ground. If you have a garage, park them inside close to the garage door. Do not park below trees or power lines. Vehicles are not safe havens for riding out a storm. I have seen my truck partially lifted from the ground during a storm.
Get a Kit Gather flashlights and a portable radio, as well as extra batteries for both. Set aside a day or two worth of food, water, toiletries as well as a couple changes of clothing. Collect copies of any important legal documents, financial papers and insurance information. ATMs and banks may be out of service and closed after the storm, so you should have cash on hand for emergencies. Keep everything in a waterproof bag, in an easily accessible location.
Get Social Check in with your neighbors. See who is leaving and who is staying, especially the elderly, so that you can check on them throughout and after.
Bonus: You can also use this time to passive aggressively offer the bad neighbors help in securing their yard.

RIDING IT OUT

Hurricane Party Look, I don't judge. But don't get so trashed that you can't keep up with what's going around you. No matter how drunk you get, you will still be in a very dangerous situation. Keep your wits and don't become a burden to those around you.
Need Help? Too Bad. If there is a mandatory evacuation in effect for the area in which you live, and you decide to remain home, you will be on your own regardless of the situation. First responders are not allowed to enter an area that was ordered to evacuate until the storm has passed. If you decide to ignore an evacuation order, there will be no help available to you.
Bonus: If you live in an area that has been given a mandatory evacuation order, leave.
Safe Room No home in this area is designed to survive a direct hit by a tornado. Should you find yourself in the path of one, the only thing you can do is hunker down in small, windowless, interior room. Small hallways and bathrooms are options, as they do not have an exterior wall. Don't wait until you see or hear a tornado to go to the room. If a warning has been issued, go immediately. Personally, I have designated my laundry room as the 'safe room'. Not only is it surrounded by other rooms, the washer, dryer, and freezer offer additional protection from collapsing structure.
Escape Plan You should never leave your refuge in the middle of a storm, but in the absolute worst case scenario, you may be forced to abandon your home. If water is rising, do not retreat into the attic unless you have a way to get through the roof, such as an ax. Of course, don't rely on power tools to escape. If the flooding hasn't rendered your vehicle useless, do not attempt to drive through completely flooded area. If you have a boat on site, or a pirogue or kayak, make use of it and get to higher ground. Ice chests float too. Along with your kit, place life vests inside with you so that you can quickly grab them if needed. Finally, boat carefully- you don't know what hides below the water. It is not advised to walk through floodwater as it can be extremely contaminated and dangerous. And again, don't be a couyon- take your pets with you.

AFTER THE STORM

Powering Up So you've made it through the storm but the power is out. One of the first sounds you may hear is your neighbor's automated whole-home generator. If you are lucky enough to have a portable generator, mumble curses at him under your breath as you roll in into the yard and struggle to get it started. Limit it's use to essential appliances only (freezers, refrigerators, etc.), as well as to keep your cell phone charged. Try to avoid Candy Crush for a few days. There are better uses for that phone. Do not run a generator indoors, as the internal combustion engine will generate deadly fumes. Run the generator in shifts to conserve gas.
Recon Before you let your pets out, clear the yard of any debris and check the status of the fence. Who knows what critters might have sought refuge in your yard. Don't let Fido be the one to discover something dangerous. Make sure the drainage systems are clear of debris, as standing water could be caused by blocked drainage.
House Inspect your home for any damage and cover any holes with tarps until it can be repaired. If a turbine has fallen off your roof, a garbage bag works as an excellent temporary fix. And naturally, be careful if you climb on your roof.
Stay Informed Use radio (or television if you have it) to keep up with any local news. Boil orders, gas leaks and fires are all very real hazards you should be aware of. Also, relief and aid may be available. MREs, bottled water, bags of ice and tarps are often handed out to locally affected residents. Please, if you are not in need, allow those who are to receive these items.
Driving Most officials will ask you to avoid getting on the road. I advise the same. But phone networks might be down and you might have family and friends you need to check in on. If you decide to venture out, follow these simple rules. If you see a downed power line, assume it is energized, even if no one has power. Drive around it, not over it. Do not get out and move it from the roadway. Leave that to the linemen. Red lights will likely be out, and I see how most of you drive around this area. So let me educate you: a dead light means the intersection is an all-way stop. Be prepared for roadblocks and curfews. If you cross through a roadblock, assume you will not be able to get back across it.
Friendly B&E Here's where being an idiot has what some would call 'perks'. When I stayed through a few storms, I would get calls from people who had evacuated, and wanted me to get into their home to put a dog in the backyard and to feed it (see, even some couyons are smart enough to evacuate- don't leave your pet behind?!). I was also requested by a few people to break into their home and empty their refrigerators and freezers (if still frozen, fire up the pit!). I can't recommend doing this, but if you decide to oblige, there are two ways you do not want to do this- at night, and alone. Have someone with you to de-escalate any neighbors who see you are obviously breaking into the home. Know the name of the homeowner, and please make sure you are at the right house.
Not a Minute Late If the local infrastructure is destroyed, prepare for a mandatory curfew. Don't break it. Don't even get close to breaking it. Be indoors well ahead of time, and only leave in the event of a dire emergency.

RESOURCES

Information is key, and can save your life.
Television Channels While Weather Channel has some of the best detailed information on television, I get frustrated with the personalities. The New Orleans channels like WWL and WDSU tend to be a little more localized for this area with great information. Local Houma station HTV (KFOL) is my go-to channel for live local coverage. The information isn't up to the other's standards, but they often show live feeds of locks and the levee systems and the bayou towns. Plus, the callers do a great job of lifting the tension in this house. But for the love of God y'all, don't take "will I be safe here" advice from HTV.
Radio Stations There's only one station I listen to when it comes to local weather- WWL 870am. They are based out of New Orleans, but they have both the resources and signal strength to give reliable coverage throughout the storm.
Online Resources Lately, I have found myself relying more and more on raw data. Here's a list of websites I use:
National Hurricane Center - This one is kind of a gimme. When there is an active storm, an additional inundation map is added to the site. I can't link it here, because it changes for each storm. But look for it. It is extremely helpful in seeing possible flooding locally.
Sun Sentinel Hurricane Tracking - The best online tracker I've found. Even though it is based out of South Florida, they live track all currently active storms.
Weather Channel - Another gimme. Enter your town and stay up to date.
Tropical Tidbits - Radar imagery of all currently active storms.
Jay's Page - A great collection of different radars for the area.
Live Storm Chasing - An interactive map of live-streaming storm chasers.
Nola Ready - While this is focused on New Orleans, it does have information I find useful.
Snapchat Map - Hear me out- if you want to see what kind of damage is out there, but are unable to go see for yourself, let others do it for you.
Bonus: You also get to see how many idiots are out there driving and using their phones.
IN CLOSING Tropical Storms and Hurricanes are extremely dangerous systems. Coastal Parishes like Terrebonne and Lafourche are extremely susceptible- we are basically surrounded by water. All you have to do is pull up Google Maps and look at the bayou villages. Most of the time the only areas above water are the cities themselves, protected only by the levee systems. A storm surge can (and in many cases already has) over-topped these levee systems, flooding entire communities. There is really no buffer between us and the Gulf, meaning these areas are blasted by the full strength of the storms winds. And on top of that, perhaps the deadliest and most unpredictable weapon these storms throw at us are tornadoes. It doesn't matter how well your home is built. No home is built to withstand a mid EF3 on up. Many storms of the past have also stalled over these areas, leaving us vulnerable to these perilous conditions for days at a time.
Staying through a hurricane is truly an idiotic thing to do, hence the tongue-in-cheek name. So don't take this guide as a recommendation to stay for a storm. Always listen to your local officials. If you are smart enough to leave, grab the essentials- photos, legal documents, computers, and of course pets. Always have a plan. Be smart and stay safe.

2020.10.06 03:58 CFB_Referee Hurricane Delta

Hurricane Delta is currently a Category 3 hurricane and is expected to remain or near that strength at landfall.

A note on the name: When we go past 21 named hurricanes in a season, we switch to the Greek alphabet. It is 21 because in the English alphabet name list we do not use Q, U, X, Y and Z. This has only happened once before, in 2005. Here's the Greek alphabet, for reference: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda, Mu, Nu, Xi, Omicron Persei 8 , Pi, Rho, Sigma, Tau, Upsilon, Phi, Chi, Psi, Omega. You can learn more about hurricane names here.

Please look to local news, local weather, and local and state emergency management agencies to find out more about how you may be affected, if you need to evacuate, and steps on getting prepared. Please everyone stay safe.

2020.10.06 00:26 Taxi_Dancer From The Halls of Montezuma to the Depths of Outer Space III: What’s In a Name? (3/12)

From The Halls of Montezuma to the Depths of Outer Space III:
What’s In a Name? (3/12)
That afternoon, Captain Gabriel’s entire detachment was shuttled the short distance to the Newport News Naval Starship Yards where they were met by Admiral Etheridge and his entourage. He exchanged pleasantries with the new detachment, nodding approvingly at the eager and motivated faces of the young Marines who had been chosen to be part of the unit. Finally, he shook hands with Captain Gabriel before leading the detachment to a large ferry that was waiting at the docks, floating on a sea of bright blue waves. The ferry pulled out into the sprawling Elizabeth River and turned north, cruising lazily past the massive ship building and repair facility on its right. The detachment was topside on the ferry as it cruised lazily over the calm waters, enjoying the salty breeze and watching the numerous docks pass by where fleet ships of every size and class were being refurbished and repaired.
The ferry soon passed the repair section of the facility and continued on towards the dry-docks, where new fleet ships were being constructed. The American star ship building industry was booming, with China and Russia having a larger, albeit less technically advanced, space fleet and the United States found herself having to play catch up. The ferry turned slightly to starboard, rounding a spit of land and entered a wide, man-made canal which fed into another dock area which was generally hidden from view from the bay. There, docked at the pier, a large starship floated in the water.
Gabriel squinted his eyes at the ship, glistening in a splinter camouflage pattern of light grays and blue-grays. The ship seemed very unusual to him. It was roughly 330 meters long and half of the star ship from the aft end and going almost to the middle of the ship resembled a fleet space exploration vessel. The remaining half of the fore of the ship resembled a fleet heavy destroyer complete with one, twin mounted, 8 inch kinetic weapons gun turret, one 5 inch kinetic weapons gun turret, and one quad Mk82 torpedo launch pad. At the aft of the ship was an additional 5in weapon gun turret and another Mk82 launcher. These were elevated over a wide landing pad at the very aft end of the ship which led into a hanger bay. Meanwhile, festooned around the ship were a further six close in defense weapon systems. It reminded Gabriel of Jenn’s Hel-Plus, a system that combined a gunship troop transport with a dedicated gunship but only on a much larger scale. If Frankenstein’s monster was a star ship, this definitely would be it.
“Folks,” yelled Admiral Etheridge loudly to be heard over the salty breeze and holding his arm out towards the unusual looking star ship. “May I introduce to you the newest vessel to enter fleet service, the USS Leyte (lay-tay) Gulf!”
He put his arms down, resting them on the railing of the ferry as he gazed smiling at the ship. “Yes,” he continued. “Almost two years ago, this fleet space exploration vessel was decommissioned and her name was stricken from naval records. Since then we have been refurbishing her, adding new weapons and sensor systems and updating navigation and propulsion systems. She is the first and only ship of its class and while she may look old, she is actually the most state of the art star cruiser of its kind. We’ve also updated and improved her crew compartments and installed several research labs, increased her data storage capacity, and her communications and telemetry ensemble is the most up to date in the galaxy. We’ve even equipped her with heat syncs, dampeners, and sensor absorbing panels to give her some stealth capabilities. Yes, Corporal Chensi?”
Corporal Chensi put down her hand, a large smile on her face. “Sir, what does the galley look like?”
“There are two and they’re the best in the fleet!” laughed Etheridge. “Open and serving food twenty-four hours a day!”
The ferry drew closer to the USS Leyte Gulf and the Marines could see plenty of activity as naval fleet sailors and civilian contractors moved about her decks. A hover plank descended from the USS Leyte Gulf to the ferry.
“I’m going to hit you,” whispered Sgt. Wagner to Chensi as the Marine detachment followed Admiral Etheridge and Captain Gabriel, moving from the ferry to the ship.
“What?” said Chensi. “The mess hall is the most important part of a ship. Everyone knows that!”
The officer on the quarterdeck was the ship’s XO, a tall redhead female named Commander Locksbridge. She greeted the admiral warmly before accompanying his entourage to the rear hanger deck of the USS Leyte Gulf.
Commander Locksbridge led the Marines through the ship down a confusing path of hatches and p-ways until they emerged again at the rear of the ship where the doors of a huge hanger bay was opened to the clear blue skies and sea. There was FOB (f-ah-b) landers parked inside the bay as well as one Helios gunship, although the bay was large enough to hold more. Outside, on the landing deck, sat an official looking civilian shuttle surrounded by six clean shaven men wearing dark glasses and sharp, black suits.
“Eventually,” said Locksbridge, “once we get our complete complement, we’ll have a pair of Helios gunships and a pair of Hel-Plus gunships as well as two or three detachments of Marines and two FOB landers. The USS Leyte Gulf has already gone through her mandatory sea and space trials, and she’s performed admirably,” explained Commander Locksbridge. “We still need to perform some system’s trials, but those we can do once we get underway. For now, though, there is someone who wants to meet you folks.”
Commander Etheridge turned as a tall naval officer, accompanied by a female civilian, approached Admiral Etheridge and the Marines. “Oh, here comes the captain now,” smiled Locksbridge. “Captain Bossmarc, this is Admiral Etheridge. Sir, this is Captain Bossmarc, commander of the USS Leyte Gulf.”
Admiral Etheridge shook Captain Bossmarc’s hand. Captain Laurence Bossmarc was a lean, muscular, black officer with a thin moustache and piercing gray eyes. Captain Bossmarc was a minor celebrity amongst the fleet and was a fleet recruiter’s dream. He was the starting quarterback of the Southern States Black Panthers until an injury sidelined him and forced him into early retirement from professional football. However, instead of taking a more lucrative job in sports broadcasting, Bossmarc decided to become a fleet naval officer where his determination and proven leadership abilities rocketed him up the ranks.
“It is so good to finally meet you, sir,” said Captain Bossmarc. “Welcome aboard.” He smiled broadly at the admiral before turning to the civilian female by his side. “Sir, may I please introduce you to…”
“I know the good admiral, Captain Bossmarc,” smiled the lady, stepping forward and wrapping her arms around Admiral Etheridge in a hug. The woman was in her late 30’s and very attractive like a model with naturally tanned skin, full lips, and wavy brown hair which came down to her slender waist. She was also taller than Admiral Etheridge by almost half a foot. “How are you, Gordon? I haven’t seen you since before the mission to Willow’s World!”
“I’m fine, Madam President. Busy, but never better!” Though President Melianne Helania only wore a plain tailored white outfit she still looked stunning. “Madam President, may I introduce you to Captain Samuel Gabriel and his Marine detachment?”
Gabriel looked at his Commander in Chief with amazement. President Helania was more beautiful in person than she was on vid-cam. Keeping his professional demeanor and military courtesy intact, Captain Gabriel saluted his president then bowed slightly, shaking her hand. “It is a pleasure to meet you, Madam President.”
President Helania waved her left hand and shook her head, hugging Captain Gabriel as she hugged the admiral. “Nonsense, Captain Gabriel. It is a pleasure to meet you and your Marines. Thank you, thank you, thank you for coming. It is such an honor to meet you.”
She stepped back, looking at the detachment of awestruck Marines. “And thank all of you for what you do.” President Helania clasped her hands in front of her. “I cannot tell you how grateful that I and your nation are for your courage and sacrifices. I truly cherish all of you.”
“As you know, my first husband of over ten years was a Marine just like yourselves, an aerospace fighter pilot. I was working for the State Department at the time, helping Americans immigrate to South America, Mexico, and Canada during the last failed Commu-Socialist attempted takeover of America. Plus I was also raising the twins, so it was difficult, what with Jack being gone so much. So, I know what it’s like spending weeks, months, even years waiting for him to return, praying and worrying for him. Looking back, however, I wouldn’t trade a second of it, even when he one day failed to return.”
She smiled sadly. “I know that he died doing what he enjoyed doing. He loved being a Marine, and I loved him very much for it. He was the bravest man I’d ever known. That is why I cherish all of you, because I know the pain and heartache that one feels when their service member does not come home. Thank you so much for what you do.”
There was a lump in every Marine’s throat as President Helania walked down the line greeting and hugging every Marine in the detachment, starting with Lieutenant Rhamsburg, then Gunny Boyer, then the squad leaders SSgt. Talley SSgt. Hernandez and Sgt. Wagner. Corporal Chensi stared wide eyed, her mouth agape as President Helania made her way down the line of Marines and finally stood in front of her.
“I voted for you,” Chensi mumbled as Melianne hugged her.
“Corporal Hitchiro Chensi,” smiled the President. “I have heard and read a great deal about you, and your exploits on Willow’s World. How can anyone so young be so selfless and so brave?” Melianne placed her hands on Chensi’s shoulders, smiling in admiration. “You’re my hero, you know? Just be careful.”
“I voted for you,” Chensi mumbled again.
Melianne giggled and hugged Chensi again. “Thank you, Corporal Chensi, for the vote of confidence. But do me a favor and don’t blow up your flame-gun the next time you deploy, okay?”
President Helania stepped to the side, greeting the next Marine in the row, LCpl.Houser. He nearly passed out when she hugged him tightly.
“I voted for you,” Chensi mumbled again, eyes still wide and unblinking, mouth still hanging open.
The detachment stayed in Norfolk for four days, alternately learning the layout of the USS Leyte Gulf, studying the latest intel on the Skinny-Mogues, going over the latest intel telemetry from the naval fleet ships currently operating in the area, and going over tactics, strategies and contingency plans to deal with the pirates. Replaying video footage of the engagement between the USS Houston City and the Skinny-Mogue attackers, an interesting thing was discovered. The pirate ships had been modified to carry what looked to be plasma beam type weapons, but when the first twelve Skinny-Mogues fired at the USS Houston City, half of the pirate attackers simply just blew up. This phenomenon did not occur during the pirate’s subsequent attack runs on the USS Houston City, only during the initial opening barrage. Skinny-Mogue was a derisive name given to the pirate clans due to their relatively thin shaped and thin skinned attack ships which were usually armed with a variety of jury-rigged weaponry, a turret mounted gun, and a second turret in the rear of the gunship which housed a grappling hook. Though they outnumbered the single patrol corvette and were apparently armed with some type of plasma beam weapon, the Skinny-Mogues were ultimately unable to destroy the USS Houston City and she was able to escape, inflicting heavy casualties on her pirate attackers.
Though the fleet knew which sector of space the Skinny-Mogues retreated to, it was still a lot of space to cover. What made matters worse was the fact that the sector of space they were operating had been claimed by the Russian Confederation as they had occupied two Class One planets in that sector and were in the process of establishing a half dozen more, though there were no actual international treaties or agreements which stated that the sector of space belonged solely to the Russians. The problem was that the Skinny-Mogues were probably using alien technology to carry out their attacks, and if the US should confiscate that technology, the Russians would more than likely lay claim to it and attempt to take it by force. Though the Americans had one Marine assault ship, one destroyer and two corvettes operating in the area, they were separated by great distances and would not necessarily be able to support each other if a greater Russian force of ships arrived. And with the US fleet spread so thinly across that sector of the galaxy, there would be no guarantee that help would arrive in time to stop the Russians from taking what the Americans had found.
Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base, California, four days later:
The Marines returned from Norfolk to Camp Pendleton on a Friday payday. It was late in the afternoon, so Captain Gabriel released the detachment for the weekend except for Corporal Chensi and her squad leader, Sergeant Wagner. Gabriel had a knot in his stomach.
“Sir, please don’t do this,” begged Chensi. She was in Captain Gabriel’s office standing at parade rest in front of his desk. Sergeant Wagner stood two steps behind her and to her left, also standing at parade rest. “I can’t be the only person who is a qualified flame-gun instructor.”
Captain Gabriel looked up at Chensi from his seat, trying to appear as impassive as possible. Gunny Boyer sat at another desk across the room, also trying to appear as stoic as he could. Lieutenant Rhamsburg stood behind the captain’s desk, leaning against a wall with her arms crossed.
“I’m sorry, Corporal Chensi,” said Captain Gabriel. “But my mind is made up. I’m afraid that you’ll be sent back to battalion next week to be the subject matter expert on flame-gun and crew served weapons training. Being a part of weapon’s squad for so long, that makes you the perfect choice.”
Technically, Captain Gabriel wasn’t lying. Chensi was part of weapon’s squad for over two years and had qualified expert on all of the heavy and crew served weapons and that made her the prime candidate for the battalion’s heavy weapons instructor. But it ate at his guts that the reason why he was dropping Chensi from the team was because that was Lieutenant Rhamsburg’s condition to be the detachment executive officer. Captain Gabriel had to consider the good of the unit over the personal desires of an individual.
“But, sir,” said Chensi. “I don’t want to leave the team. I don’t understand why you are sending me back to the battalion.”
“Because you are way too careless, Corporal Chensi,” said Lieutenant Rhamsburg. “And carelessness will get you killed. You were lucky on Willow’s World. Hell, you got lucky twice. But that was it. Sheer luck! One day, though, your luck is going to run out and I’m not going to have another Marine die under my watch because she was careless!”
Chensi stared at Lieutenant Rhamsburg, fighting hard to bite back her tears. “Ma’am,” she said, slowly. “I did not do what I did on Willow’s World out of carelessness. I didn’t put myself between two politicians’ spoiled brat kids and an army of undead because I was careless. I didn’t flame a bunch of the undead to distract them away from my Helios gunship because I was careless. And I didn’t blow up both of my flame-guns because I was careless. I did it all on purpose, because that was my mission.”
Chensi turned back to Captain Gabriel. “They’re more than my team, sir. They’re my family. I feel closer to them than I do to my own siblings; even my idiot brother who joined the Army and thinks it’s a good idea to jump out of a perfectly good aerospace craft.”
“And did you even think, just for one second, about the consequences of your actions if one of your reckless stunts backfired?” retorted Lieutenant Rhamsburg.
“None of us would be standing here if one of my ‘reckless stunts’ had backfired,” said Chensi in a slow, deliberate tone. “But then again, if I hadn’t acted so ‘recklessly’, none of us would be standing here.”
“You don’t know that, Corporal!” shouted Rhamsburg.
“I think we’re done here,” said Captain Gabriel abruptly looking up from his desk into the pleading eyes of his young flame gunner. His heart was heavy, but Gabriel kept his face as unemotional as he could. “Corporal Chensi, you’ll report to the Battalion S3 operations officer on Monday as a weapons training instructor. You’re dismissed, Corporal.”
Chensi came to attention and saluted, tears now flowing freely down her cheeks. “I thought you said… I thought you said that we never leave a Marine behind. Ever.” She executed an about face and quickly left the office, closing the door behind her.
“Sir?” said Sergeant Wagner, coming to attention.
“You’re excused as well, Sergeant Wagner,” said Gabriel looking down as if ashamed. “Have a good weekend.”
“Aye, aye, sir,” said Sergeant Wagner, saluting before turning and leaving the office.
The air seemed to hang thickly in the office as the door shut behind Sergeant Wagner, and silence reigned for a few seconds. Finally, Gunny Boyer said, “Hitchiro Chensi, Corporal. United States Marine Corps” He was reading her data file.
“Twenty-one years old. Born September 6, 2354 in Honolulu, Hawaii. She joined the Corps on her eighteenth birthday. Her father was a weapon systems officer with a fleet Star Phantom squadron. When Chensi was only two years old, her father was killed when a drunk driver slammed into his hover car when he was driving home from duty. Her mother never remarried and works for the Department of Defense as a linguist for fleet intelligence at Pearl Harbor. She speaks fluent Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Ebonics, Tagalog, Russian, German, and Korean.”
“Chensi has a brother who is two years older than her who is an aero-space jump trooper with the Army’s 101st Screaming Star Eagles. He’s been deployed off world for the past two years. Chensi also has a twin brother, Akiro, who has just started Navy boot camp,” continued Gunny Boyer.
“Chensi,” whispered Sergeant Wagner. “What the hell are you doing?”
“Shhhhhhhhh…” said Chensi, waving away Sergeant Wagner with her hand. “I can’t hear what they’re saying.”
Corporal Chensi and her squad leader Sergeant Wagner were huddled outside of Captain Gabriel’s office, Chensi’s ear pressed firmly against the closed door.
“I think Gunny is talking about me,” she whispered.
“Chensi,” insisted Sergeant Wagner. “We’ve already been over this with the commander. Will you just trust Captain Gabriel?”
“Shhhhhhhhhh…” said Chensi , waving her hand again.
Inside Captain Gabriel’s office, Gunny Boyer put down the data pad, looking at Lieutenant Rhamsburg. “By the age of twenty-one, she’d already earned two Bronze Star Medals with ‘V’ device and one Meritorious Service Medal with ‘V’ device, all for displaying conspicuous courage and selfless sacrifice in the face of overwhelming odds. The military flows through Corporal Chensi’s blood. It’s been a part of her ever since she was born. Personally, I don’t see Chensi’s actions as reckless, ma’am. I see someone who is genuinely comfortable with who she is and who cares about her team mates, though, occasionally it is a full time job for her squad leader to reel her in.”
Lieutenant Rhamsburg looked down, sighing. She hadn’t considered that Chensi’s actions during operations may have come from a deeply ingrained sense of duty and esprit de corps to those she considered not only her team mates but also her family. Wasn’t that what set the Marines apart from every other branch of the service? Wasn’t it that sense of duty, honor, and selfless service that made Corporal Chensi such a great Marine?
“Chensi’s a Marine who believes in what we’re doing.” Captain Gabriel breathed heavily as he sat up. “More than once, she’s put her life on the line to protect others and, like Gunny said, I don’t think it was acts of recklessness.”
Captain Gabriel turned to Lieutenant Rhamsburg, but looked down regretfully. “I’d love to have you stay as my XO, Lieutenant Rhamsburg, I really would. You are the most qualified lieutenant in the entire brigade. But it would kill Chensi to separate her from those she considers family, and I just can’t do that to that young Marine.”
“Yeah,” said Rhamsburg. “Neither can I. It’s just that Chensi just reminds me so much of Private Meli. Booting her from the detachment would be like killing Meli twice.”
Lieutenant Rhamsburg looked down again and sighed. “Sir, I know that I’m seriously going to regret this, but I’d like to withdraw my condition to have Chensi off the detachment. She belongs here with her team. With her family.”
Captain Gabriel exhaled and smiled, relief written all over his face. “Thank you, Lieutenant Rhamsburg,” he said.
The two looked up as they suddenly heard Chensi’s voice loudly exclaim, “Yippieeee!” from the other side of the closed office door.
Gunny Boyer rolled his eyes. “Damn it, Chensi,” he thought.

2020.10.05 18:14 cd_question CM account question

Hi Everyone,

Throwaway account because I have a sensitive question. After a period of singlehood, I'm thinking I'll be mentally ready to start dating again. I was considering signing up for catholic match, but through the preview pages like this one, I found out that an ex who abused me is currently registered. I want to do everything I can to avoid this person because risking anything near to the abuse again simply isn't worth it.
If I register, is there a way that I can at least block their account so that they can't view my profile? It would be nice to explore dating online, but if the blocking mechanisms aren't thorough enough I think I would probably just choose to skip the service.
Thanks

2020.09.26 15:38 ZandrickEllison Offseason Blueprint: The Toronto Raptors already had their fairy tale ending, but now they'd like a sequel

The playoffs continue to rage on, but there are 26 teams sitting at home with nothing to do but twiddle their thumbs, watch the Conference Finals, and wait for next season to start.
For their sake, we wanted to look ahead with the next edition of the OFFSEASON BLUEPRINT series. In each, we'll preview some big decisions and make some recommendations for plans of attack along the way. Today, we're looking at the Toronto Raptors
step one: Wish Upon a Star...
When the Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies came into the league (in 1995), expectations weren't terribly high. They felt like filler teams, made for Michael Jordan to break records against. Maybe they'd have a playoff appearance here and there, but there's way that they'd ever be an elite contender. There was no way that some random ass team from Canada would rise to the top of the league. Sadly, Vancouver has fallen off the map (for now), but Toronto has exploded as one of the best stories and best franchises in the association.
This fairy tale didn't happen overnight. The Raptors had some nice moments and nice young stars in the past -- Damon Stoudamire, Vince Carter, Chris Bosh -- but they won a grand total of 1 playoff series over their first 20 seasons in the NBA. Given that, their latest stretch has been remarkable. They've won 48 games for seven seasons in a row, including 50+ in each of the last five. They won with Kawhi Leonard, but they managed to survive and stay relevant without him as well. Making the playoffs has become part of their DNA. Masai Ujiri, Nick Nurse, and Kyle Lowry have earned a lot of attention and credit for that (rightfully so), but we also have to give credit to Coach Dwane Casey and DeMar DeRozan for helping to get the ball rolling in the first place.
Wisely, the Raptors locked up Nick Nurse to a contract extension this offseason. The next step should be doing the same with Ujiri. The fact that high-profile teams and big markets like the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, L.A. Lakers, and L.A. Clippers all have power brokers in place should be seen as a positive there. There aren't many franchises that in a position to throw $10M+ his way. Still, there's no reason the team should let their magic genie Ujiri go. In a league where role players get $10-15M a year, top executives deserve to get obscenely rich as well. Losing Ujiri would sting badly -- not only for basketball reasons, but also for reputation reasons. The Raptors have had all their wishes come true so far; they can't start pinching pennies now just because it's expensive to varnish a magic lamp.
step two: convince FVV that there is nothing more than this provincial life
It's the dream of every college basketball player to earn the attention and affection of NBA scouts. At Wichita State, Fred VanVleet did his part to turn their eye. He started 100+ games, and helped lead the Shockers to a combined record of 121-24 across four seasons on campus. When he finally strolled into the NBA ballroom... he received nothing but crickets. Eyerolls. Murmurs about his unappealing body. He didn't get drafted at all.
Now, four seasons and one championship later, the league suitors are singing a different tune. It's going to be a weak free agent class, and FVV is one of the Belles of the ball. There's talk that he can generate $15M, $18M, $20M! in salary per season. Heck, I've even heard some talk like 4 years, $100M (that's $25M per year, if you're no bookworm like Belle.)
Ironically, it's some of the same qualities that made NBA scouts dismiss him that make FVV an appealing target now. He's shorter and stubbier, but that strength allows him to play and defend both PG and SG. In fact, basketball-reference charted him as playing 56% of his minutes at SG this season. VanVleet's shooting prowess (39.3% from three for his career) also fits like a glove in the modern NBA. He can be a lead guard, or he can be a complementary 3+D spacing guard... he can do a variety of things to win a team win. As such, he's a "high floor" and "high character" acquisition that can justify an inflated salary, a la Malcolm Brogdon last year (who got 4 years, $85M total from Indiana.)
VanVleet would be a valuable addition to any team, but he's especially valuable to this particular Toronto team. He's already shown that he can play alongside Kyle Lowry, but he may have an even larger role in the future. Lowry's massive contract ($30M per year) is coming off the books after next year. As good as Lowry has been, he's 34 now, and he's not going to be a viable starter forever. VanVleet can continue to play in tandem with Lowry now, and then potentially take the reins of the lead guard position for the next 5 years after. Through that lens, $20M doesn't sound unreasonable at all. I also like the idea of retaining some members of the title team as long as possible, as it adds prestige to the franchise.
No doubt, the Raps will want VanVleet back, even if he's paid $20M per season. He may be worth that. The question is: what happens if he gets offered more than he's worth? What if the Knicks get crazy and offer him $25M or more?
Toronto can't get into an unreasonable bidding war, but they can evoke VanVleet's emotional connection to the franchise and fan base. They helped give him the development and opportunity to become a star. And while Toronto isn't a traditional "big market" compared to New York City, it may be more appealing. Toronto’s a thriving city, where $20 (or $20M) goes a lot further than NYC. Moreover, VanVleet will be a beloved member of the Raptors' franchise and their legacy. If he goes off to be a hired gun somewhere else, those new fans may turn on him as soon as his shooting slumps. If Toronto is effectively "The Beast" (that you learned to love), the Knicks may be "Gaston," the showy rival that you'll only end up resenting. I truly believe that VanVleet is better off in Toronto (even at 80-90% of the price) than going to a franchise like the Knicks. Of course, it's not my decision to make.
step three: Jack and the (singular) Beanstalk
Presuming that Toronto is able to come up with a new accord with Fred VanVleet, they'll have limited coins left in the purse. They may need to make a decision regarding their bigs, with both Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka entering free agency as well. These are two decorated veterans who have gotten used to gold (this season, Gasol made $25.5M and Ibaka made $23M.)
While the Raptors' frontcourt depth helped them win a title, it doesn't make sense to double dip and OVERLOAD on the position. The modern NBA doesn't cater to centers, so you don't want to tilt your salary cap too much in that direction. Moreover, backup Chris Boucher (also a free agent) deserves some more playing time. It's very realistic for the team to pick one of their current bigs, and roll with Boucher as a backup.
Between the two bigs, I'd lean to retaining Serge Ibaka over Marc Gasol myself. As always, Gasol's raw stats -- 7.5 points and 6.3 rebounds -- don't reflect his actual value. He's a good, heady basketball player who is able to stretch the court offensively. Even at age 35, he's still a good defensive presence. In fact, ESPN's RPM metric graded him as a +3.4 impact per 100 possessions on defense, 5th best among all centers. Still, it's hard to ignore the age factor. Gasol's 35 now, and turning 36 in January. Based on either the eye test or analytics, you can see some decline in his play. Retaining him on a 1-year deal would make sense, but anything more than that would be risky.
Meanwhile, Serge Ibaka is no spring chicken himself. He's listed at 31 (and some think he may be older than that.) Still, he doesn't appear to be in as noticeable of a decline. He still has some spring to his legs, which aids him as a rim protector and also helps him convert inside on offense. He actually outpaced Gasol this year in terms of true shooting percentage 58% to 55%. Overall, Gasol vs. Ibaka is fairly even right now, but we'd have to lean in favor of the younger player as we project to the future. All things (and contracts) being equal, I'd re-sign Serge Ibaka. If Gasol wants to undercut Ibaka and come in for a cheaper deal, then that's a legitimate option as well. Center is less of a priority for all teams right now, and the Raps shouldn't overpay for competent play down low.
step four: dream of a date with Prince Charming, but settle for Prince Charming-Enough
The Toronto Raptors and their fans have their eyes on the prize: Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Greek Freak may hit free agency in 2021, at which point the Raptors could be a legitimate contender for his services.
Realistically, it's hard to imagine the team clearing enough space to sign Antetokounmpo outright. They'd have the room if they didn't re-sign Fred VanVleet or Serge Ibaka to long-term deals, but if they did that, why would Antetokounmpo want to come play for them? He's not leaving Milwaukee unless he signs up with a superior roster.
More likely, Toronto would need to work out some sign and trade centered on Pascal Siakam (and his $30M salary.) If the Raptors had the chance to grab Antetokounmpo, they wouldn't mind waving their diamond in the rough Siakam goodbye. There's some duplication to their talents and skill sets, only Antetokounmpo is a much better version of it. He's also about a year younger. With a Siakam to Antetokounmpo upgrade, the Raps would be right back in the title picture again.
While this whole entry has been about fairy tales, let's take a step back and presume that doesn't happen. What then...?
The first step would be trying to put Siakam in better situations to score. He had been incredibly efficient as a secondary option behind Kawhi Leonard, crashing in the paint and shooting 60.2% from two-point range. This past season, as the go-to scorer, he found those shots harder to come by and saw his two-point percentage plummet down to 49.9%. As a result, his true shooting numbers crashed from 62.8% to 55.4%. Some of that is injury related, but a lot of it is shot distribution and defensive attention. Simply put, Siakam had to work a lot harder to get his points. The prior season, 49% of his twos and 98% of his threes were assisted. This year, those numbers dropped to 42% and 66% respectively. He also took longer threes. In 2018-19, 68% of his three pointers came in the corner. This year, that dropped to 22%. (All numbers courtesy of basketball-reference.)
Overall, the Raptors may need to rethink their usage of Siakam and have him take a step back as a lead option. While the team was still successful overall, their offense wasn't any great shakes, ranking 14th overall. That has to improve if they want to win the East again. One way to potentially do that is to redistribute the scoring wealth. Rather than treating Siakam as a top option, treat him as an option. He's a solid scorer and ball mover -- like most of his teammates -- so let's get them all involved equally. The Raptors goal should be to have their top 6 players (Siakam, Lowry, FVV, O.G. Anunoby, Ibaka/Gasol, and Norman Powell) all average around 15 points per game. They can also get more from rising players like Chris Boucher, Terence Davis, and Matt Thomas (a better marksman than Snow White's Huntsman). With balanced scoring like that from all over the roster, they may be able to get their offense back into the top 10. Better still, they may spin a whole new fairy tale for the Canadian kids to enjoy.

2020.09.26 08:09 AdequateSizeAttache Setting the Record Straight on the Evidence of Prior Sexual Abuse - Part 1

[This post has been split into two parts because of selfpost character limits.]

Introduction

It surprises me how often I see discussions involving speculation on whether JonBenet's UTIs, vaginitis, bedwetting, and history of frequent doctor visits indicate sexual abuse or not. These discussions invariably include people chiming in to share how they or someone they know had similar issues but were never abused. From these discussions, one could get the impression that itchy pageant costumes or Mr. Bubble useage are perfectly reasonable explanations for the evidence of sexual abuse.
The fact is, there's no need to speculate based on these things. There is physical evidence that is a significant indicator of prior sexual abuse. This is the evidence that should be at the forefront of discussions on the question of sexual abuse, not bubble baths or bedwetting. Issues such as vaginitis, UTIs, and bedwetting are not specific to sexual abuse; there are other possible explanations for them. There is no other possible explanation for the physical evidence besides trauma from physical penetration.
In reading discussions on the case over the years, it's always puzzled me how often the evidence of prior sexual abuse gets downplayed or dismissed. In considering why, I believe it is due primarily to these two common misconceptions:
Common Misconception 1 (as demonstrated above): The evidence of sexual abuse = vaginal irritation, UTIs, rashes, bedwetting, soiling, frequent doctor visits
Common Misconception 2: There is a medical debate on the issue and there's evidence to support both sides
Common Misconception 1 is a straw man argument — the actual evidence (the physical findings) is not being addressed or refuted.
Common Misconception 2 is an argument from false equivalence. An equal, rather than accurate, amount of weight is given to both sides of the issue. People see the mountain of conflicting information and contradicting opinions and think "It looks like expert opinion on this issue is divided; I guess a case can be made for either side." The enormous difference in expertise and experience between the various experts is ignored, as is the level of access they had to the evidence. This misconception gives the impression that all these expert opinions cancel each other out, rendering the issue debatable and open to interpretation. Consequently, the probative value of the evidence is undermined, making it easier for people to feel they can dismiss.
I think several factors have contributed to these two misconceptions:
However, if one takes a closer look at the evidence, it becomes apparent that it is not weighted equally on both sides. There is no medical debate, but a medical consensus. Every child sexual abuse expert who examined the genital findings from JonBenet's autopsy recognized physical signs of sexual abuse that predated her murder. Despite some objections to their conclusion, no one has disputed the physical findings of these experts. Their findings are compelling and should be seriously considered. In order to do that, though, one must first understand what the findings are and get acquainted with the doctors who testified to them.
The purpose of this post is to lay out everything that is known about the evidence of prior sexual abuse, but also to put it into a larger context so that hopefully it will be better understood. This will involve delving a bit into the history of child sexual abuse evaluations (it will become relevant later), as well as some background information of the experts involved. I will also go over dissenting opinions and address some common counterarguments and myths.

The evolution of modern pediatric sexual abuse evaluations: A brief historical timeline

1857 - One of the first known forensic medical studies on child sexual abuse, Étude médico-légale sur les attentats aux mœurs (Forensic study on offenses against morals) by French medical doctor and pathologist Auguste Ambroise Tardieu, is published. This treatise describes various forms of child abuse and maltreatment and includes anatomical drawings of genital findings which by modern standards are considered surprisingly accurate and ahead of its time. For some reason these efforts are largely ignored and it will be over a century before interest in sexual abuse evaluations from a medical perspective is resurrected.
1940s-50s - Child sexual abuse remains an unacknowledged taboo. Medical textbooks of this era tell doctors that children can contract STIs like gonorrhea from non-sexual means, such as from toilet seats, sharing towels, or sleeping in the same bed as an infected adult. Such myths will pervade for decades.
1962 - "The Battered Child Syndrome" by pediatrician C. Henry Kempe is published and physical child abuse is recognized. A watershed moment in pediatrics and child abuse protection. This article is about detecting hidden signs of physical abuse using modern radiological technology and newly proposed evaluation guidelines. Detecting chronic or hidden sexual abuse, however, will prove to be a more enduring challenge.
Late 1960s - By now all 50 states have child abuse protection laws in place.
1970s - Feminist campaigners and policymakers take up the cause of child sexual abuse. Most child protection workers during this period are social workers and therapists. The field of child abuse protection and evaluation is in its nascency.
1974 - Congress enacts the Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA, P.L. 93-247). CAPTA creates a nationwide focus on establishing standardized protocols for dealing with all forms of child abuse and neglect. Mandatory reporting is one component of CAPTA. Before, only doctors were required to report cases of suspected child abuse; now, it is anyone in a position of authority — teachers, camp counselors, etc. Consequently, there is a significant increase in the reporting of child abuse cases and an increase in the demand of evaluations for suspected sexual abuse. Most of the physicians doing these medical evaluations are not researchers or academics but work with prosecutor's offices and law enforcement.
1975 - Suzanne M. Sgroi, physician pioneer in the field, publishes an article calling child sexual abuse "the last frontier in child abuse" which "remains a taboo topic in many areas."
1977 - C. Henry Kempe brings awareness to the issue of child sexual abuse by following up "The Battered Child Syndrome" with a landmark lecture at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics in New York City. The talk, titled "Sexual Abuse, Another Hidden Pediatric Problem" is published in the journal Pediatrics the following year.
1980s - Doctors start examining children's genitals, documenting, cataloging and trying to interpret their findings. Some use a colposcope, a binocular-like instrument originally used to detect cervical cancer, which magnifies the vaginal canal and tissues up to 4-30x. Some take anatomical measurements which they use to develop criteria for suspected abuse. They know what findings they see in abused children, but there is an acute lack of understanding of what "normal" or nonabused genital findings look like.
1981 - The article "Sexual Misuse: Rape, Molestation, and Incest" by Dr. Bruce Woodling is published in the journal Pediatric Clinics of North America.
Dr. Woodling is a California physician whose area of specialty is in sexual abuse forensics. The paper presents his research on what he has dubbed the "wink response test", a concept borrowed from Tardieu's 19th-century forensic manual. This test involves stroking the area near the anus with a cotton swab and gauging the response — contraction of the sphincter indicates no abuse, while an involuntary opening or 'winking' response indicates prior penetration. It was a test Tardieu developed to diagnose pederasty and Woodling has applied it to children as a way to detect anal abuse.
1982 - The wave of daycare sexual abuse hysteria of the 80s begins with the Kern County abuse allegations. The investigation and trial will culminate in the conviction of two couples (the McCuans and Kniffens) for sexually abusing several children. Dr. Woodling's wink response test and testimony play a part in their conviction. Several other similar cases in the same area at the time result in convictions of several others.
1984 - Daycare abuse hysteria continues with the Fells Acres and McMartin Preschool accusations. In the Fells Acre case, day care teacher Gerald Amirault will be put on trial and convicted of sexually assaulting and raping nine children. Questionable interview methods of the children and unproven genital evaluation criteria form the basis for the conviction.
The McMartin preschool case is the first to receive major media attention in the United States. Pediatrician Astrid Heger, under the tutelage of Dr. Bruce Woodling, conducts many of the evaluations of the McMartin children and diagnoses the majority of them as having been sexually abused. The criteria used for the evaluations are based primarily on Woodling's research as well as other published papers at the time (e.g., Cantwell's 1983 study on hymenal diameter measurements). Many of the children are found to have suspect genital findings such as notches, clefts, bands, tissue tags, ruffled or rolled hymenal edges, 'microtraumas' seen only with magnification, hymenal openings which measure over four millimeters, as well as positive reactions to Woodling's wink response test.
mid to late 80s - More abuse allegations and convictions including Country Walk, Wee Nursery, Bronx Five, Little Rascals day care, Glendale Montessori cases.
1988 - Dr. John McCann, a pediatrics professor and researcher from UCSF School of Medicine, drops a bombshell at the 18th annual child abuse convention in San Diego. He presents the results of a study he and his colleagues have worked on the past four years. They had gathered a control group of about 300 nonabused/"normal" children and meticulously documented and photographed their anuses and genitals, the first such study to do so. What they learned shocked McCann and everyone else in the field. Many of the anatomic findings which some specialists were claiming to be signs of abuse were commonly found in the nonabused children. The study showed that the large variation of anatomical features of childrens' genitals were, in fact, just that — variations of normal. This meant that parents and caretakers were being reported and convicted based on erroneous unscientific criteria. This presentation, titled "Anatomical Standardization of Normal Prepubertal Children," is a watershed moment in the field.
1989 - The first paper based on McCann's study ("Perianal findings in prepubertal children selected for nonabuse: a descriptive study") is published in the journal Child Abuse & Neglect. Among its conclusions, it shows that Dr. Woodling's wink response test has no scientific basis.
The impact of McCann's study influences leaders in the field to call for an overhaul in the way sexual abuse evaluation criteria are approached:
Medical Examination for Sexual Abuse: Have We Been Misled?
The more we learn, the less we know "with reasonable medical certainty"?
1990s - This decade sees an explosion of research and progress. The second paper based on McCanns' landmark study ("Genital findings in prepubertal girls selected for nonabuse: a descriptive study") is published in the journal Pediatrics in 1990. The dropping of charges in the McMartin preschool trial, also in 1990, marks the beginning of the winding down of the nation's abuse hysteria. McCann's research is presented as evidence by the defense in some abuse trials, such as the McMartin and Little Rascals daycare cases.
1992 - A classification system for evaluating children for suspected sexual abuse is proposed by Dr. Joyce Adams, Katherine Harper and Sandra Knudson. This later becomes known as the Adams classification system (keep this system in mind as we will be referring back to it) and will be periodically revised with updated criteria throughout the following decades. It will be adopted and used in the field of child abuse pediatrics and gynecology worldwide. John McCann's research help form a basis for this system.
mid to late 90s - More research based on cross-sectional, case-control, and longitudinal studies of abused and nonabused children are published which improves understanding and accuracy of evaluation criteria: Berenson, Heger, Adams, Emans, Kellogg, Kerns, McCann, Muram, Finkel, etc. Due to the errors of the previous decade, specialists in the field are highly conscientious and prudent about differentiating nonabuse from abuse criteria.

The evidence of prior sexual abuse in the JonBenet Ramsey case: What we know

When Boulder County Coroner Dr. John Meyer performed JonBenet's autopsy, he identified signs of acute vaginal trauma which he believed was consistent with digital penetration. What we didn't find out until the publication of James Kolar's book Foreign Faction in 2012 is that Dr. Meyer also saw indications of prior sexual contact. Concerned about this possibility, he sought a specialist opinion and brought Dr. Andrew Sirotnak to the morgue to examine JonBenet's genital injuries. Dr. Sirotnak was a child abuse pediatrician who headed the Child Protection Team at Children's Hospital Colorado. He confirmed Meyer's opinion that there were signs of prior sexual contact.
Here are the relevant passages from Kolar's book:
  • Dr. Meyer also observed signs of chronic inflammation around the vaginal orifice and believed that these injuries had been inflicted in the days or weeks before the acute injury that was responsible for causing the bleeding at the time of her death. This irritation appeared consistent with prior sexual contact.
[Foreign Faction: Who Really Kidnapped JonBenet?, A. James Kolar, p. 58]
  • Following the meeting, Dr. Meyer returned to the morgue with Dr. Andy Sirontak, Chief of Denver Children's Hospital Child Protection Team, so that a second opinion could be rendered on the injuries observed to the vaginal area of JonBenet. He would observe the same injuries that Dr. Meyer had noted during the autopsy protocol and concurred that a foreign object had been inserted into the opening of JonBenet's vaginal orifice and was responsible for the acute injury witnessed at the 7:00 o'clock position. Further inspection revealed that the hymen was shriveled and retracted, a sign that JonBenet had been subjected to some type of sexual contact prior to the date of her death. Dr. Sirontak could not provide an opinion as to how old those injuries were or how many times JonBenet may have been assaulted and would defer to the expert opinions of other medical examiners.
    [Kolar, p. 61]
  • Dr. Meyer was concerned about JonBenet's vaginal injuries, and he, along with Boulder investigators, sought the opinions of a variety of other physicians in the days following her autopsy. Dr. Sirontak, a pediatrician with Denver Children's Hospital, had recognized signs of prior sexual trauma but neither he nor Dr. Meyer were able to say with any degree of certainty what period of time may have been involved in the abuse.
    [Kolar, p. 63]
Boulder Police would later ask several child sexual abuse experts to review the autopsy findings* in order to help them determine if there was evidence of prior sexual abuse. In addition to Andrew Sirotnak, these are the experts whom we know were consulted:
Richard Krugman
James Monteleone
Valerie Rao
John McCann
That's right — that John McCann. The same John McCann who was responsible for putting child sexual abuse evaluations onto scientific footing and who happened to establish the standards for what is considered normal and abnormal in pediatric genital exams was consulted on the JonBenet Ramsey case.
In Steve Thomas's 2001 deposition for the Wolf v Ramsey civil trial, Thomas says that McCann came recommended by the FBI. There's a reason for that, which is that McCann was regarded as one of the the foremost authorities on interpreting pediatric anogenital findings in cases of suspected abuse. Thomas also refers to McCann, Monteleone, and Rao as the "blue ribbon pediatric panel." Based on various sources, we know that there was at least one meeting in Boulder in September 1997 involving McCann, Rao, Monteleone, and Krugman.
Here is the relevant passage from Thomas's book:
In mid-September, a panel of pediatric experts from around the country reached one of the major conclusions of the investigation - that JonBenet had suffered vaginal trauma prior to the day she was killed.
There were no dissenting opinions among them on the issue, and they firmly rejected any possibility that the trauma to the hymen and chronic vaginal inflammation were caused by urination issues or masturbation. We gathered affidavits stating in clear language that there were injuries "consistent with prior trauma and sexual abuse"...."There was chronic abuse"..."Past violation of the vagina"...."Evidence of both acute injury and chronic sexual abuse." In other words, the doctors were saying it had happened before.
...
The results, however, were not what is known in the legal world as "conclusive" - which means that there can be no other interpretation - and I would fully expect defense lawyers to argue something different. Nevertheless, our highly qualified doctors had brought in a remarkable finding.
[JonBenet: Inside the Ramsey Murder Investigation, Steve Thomas & Don Davis, p. 253]
The experts expected to testify in court had the case gone to trial. As we know, there was no criminal trial, but we know the experts were called to testify before the grand jury.
*During JonBenet's autopsy, an instrument called a colposcope was used to examine and document her genital injuries. This is standard procedure in forensic pathology in cases of suspected child abuse or sexual assault. Colposcopy illuminates and magnifies the vaginal cavity and is used to identify abnormal changes to tissue and the internal genital structures. The experts would have relied on these colposcopic photos as well as histologic samples of JonBenet's vaginal mucosa in addition to the autopsy report, coroner's notes, and lab results.

The physical findings explained

These are the genital findings we know were discovered at JonBenet's autopsy:
Ref. no. Finding Source
1 Chronic inflammation around vaginal orifice FF
2 Small amount of dried blood on perineum AR
3 Small amount of dried and semifluid blood on skin of fourchette and in vestibule AR
4 Hyperemia of vestibule and vaginal wall AR
5 Abrasion on hymenal orifice at 7 o'clock position, involving the hymen and vaginal wall AR
6 Epithelial erosion with underlying capillary congestion of tissue from 7'oclock AR
7 Hymenal orifice measuring 1cm x 1cm AR
8 A lack of hymenal tissue between the 10 and 2 o'clock positions AR
9 Vascular congestion and focal interstitial chronic inflammation of vaginal mucosa in all sections AR
10 Bruise on hymen BP
11 Three dimensional thickening from inside to outside of inferior hymenal rim BP
12 Narrowing of inferior hymenal rim to base of hymen BP
13 Exposure of vaginal rugae BP
AR = Autopsy Report
BP = Bonita Papers
FF = Foreign Faction
What do these physical findings mean?
Here is a quick break down:
  • 5, 6, and 10, with corresponding bleeding 2 and 3, are signs of acute trauma from the time of the murder.
  • 7 is something that gets brought up as evidence of prior abuse ("enlarged hymenal opening"). However, criteria based on hymenal opening measurements were removed from the Adams classification guidelines in 1996. McCann did not include it in his criteria for abuse, but said it supported the findings for abuse. Since the late 90s/early 2000s, specialists have tried to move away from using measurement-based criteria as it is difficult to do precisely. Research data has shown that measurements can vary with the examination position, technique, age of the child, state of relaxation of the child, and the skill of the examiner.
  • 8 describes a crescentic hymen, a common variation of hymen types. This is a normal finding. Generally, discrepancies of the anterior half of the hymen (above the 3 and 9 o'clock positions) are not considered concerning and missing segments, notches, clefts can be normal findings. It is the inferior half of the hymen (below the 3 and 9 o'clock positions) where experts look for indicators of abuse.
  • 11-13 are findings observed by John McCann that describe structural changes of the hymen from a prior penetration. 12 describes a transection (a healed laceration) of the inferior portion of the hymen.
  • 1, 4, 9 can be caused by a variety of other conditions and on their own are not classified as indicators for abuse. In the case where findings indicating abuse are also present, they need to be considered in context.
McCann's findings
The most important of these findings to understand is 12, which is one of McCann's observations outlined in the Bonita Papers.
There was a three dimensional thickening from inside to outside on the inferior hymeneal rim with a bruise apparent on the external surface of the hymen and a narrowing of the hymeneal rim from the edge of the hymen to where it attaches to the muscular portion of the vaginal openings. At the narrowing area, there appeared to be very little if any hymen present.
To understand what this means, take a look at the white line segment labeled "Hymenal width" in this colposcopic photo (warning: image of vagina/hymen). It demarcates the length of the hymenal membrane from the rim/edge to the base where it attaches to the vaginal wall.
A narrowing of the hymenal rim means the hymenal membrane is reduced in dimension from the rim/edge toward the base. When the rim is narrowed all the way to the base, that is called a complete cleft or a transection. A transection is a discontinuity of the inferior hymenal rim that extends to or through the base of the hymen. Basically, it is a telltale residual absence of tissue from a healed complete laceration.
If this is difficult to visualize, here is a figure which shows what transections look like:
Figure 3: Hymenal Membrane Characteristics
[source]
The Adams classification system
In the fields of child abuse pediatrics and pediatric gynecology, the set of guidelines most widely used in interpreting genital findings is the Adams classification system.
If we were to look at the most recently revised version (2018), we would see that it identifies certain "findings caused by trauma":
These findings are highly suggestive of abuse, even in the absence of a disclosure from the child, unless the child and/or caretaker provides a timely and plausible description of accidental anogenital straddle, crush or impalement injury, or past surgical interventions that are confirmed from review of medical records.
Among those findings that are "highly suggestive of abuse" includes point 37, listed in the subsection titled "Residual (healing) injuries to genital/anal tissues" under section E:
Healed hymenal transection/complete hymen cleft, a defect in the hymen below the 3-9 o'clock location that extends to or through the base of the hymen, with no hymenal tissue discernible at that location
This is precisely what Dr. McCann described having observed in JonBenet.
A transection in the inferior half of the hymen of a prepubertal child is a significant finding because it is considered a clear indication of a prior penetrating injury:
  • Multiple studies have noted the presence of hymenal transections only in prepubertal girls with a history of disclosed sexual abuse.
[ Sara T. Stewart, MD. Hymenal Characteristics in Girls with and without a History of Sexual Abuse, p. 533]
  • Hymenal transections are very rarely seen in prepubertal girls who have not been sexually abused. However, a demonstrated transection, based on multiple studies, is commonly viewed as “a clear but uncommon indicator of past trauma.”
[Mishori, R., Ferdowsian, H., Naimer, K. et al. The little tissue that couldn’t – dispelling myths about the Hymen’s role in determining sexual history and assault.]
  • Thus a deep notch, transection, or perforation on the inferior portion of the hymen may be considered as a definitive sign of sexual abuse or other trauma.
[Berenson, et al. A case-control study of anatomic changes resulting from sexual abuse, p. 829]
  • A transection of the posterior hymen between 4 and 8 o’clock in prepubertal girls suggests genital penetrating trauma; however, the presence of this finding is not confirmatory of sexual abuse. Posterior hymenal findings including transections between 4 and 8 o’clock, deep notches, and perforations were not seen in studies of prepubertal girls without a history of genital trauma from sexual abuse included in this systematic review. Therefore, one can conclude that the posterior hymenal findings of transections, deep notches, and perforations are extremely infrequent findings among children without a history of genital trauma from sexual abuse or other means. [...]
However, because the prevalence of posterior hymenal findings (between 4 and 8 o’clock) such as transections, deep notches, and perforations are near zero in nonabused prepubertal girls, the presence of these examination findings suggests genital trauma from sexual abuse. In the absence of known genital trauma from accidental means, the possibility for sexual abuse must be strongly considered. In a prepubertal girl with a posterior hymenal finding of a transection (between 4 and 8 o’clock), a deep notch (between 4 and 8 o’clock), or a perforation, a report to child protective services should be strongly considered. At a minimum, an examination by a child abuse specialist should occur to confirm these findings and to help provide a careful interpretation regarding the likelihood of sexual abuse.
[Molly Curtin Berkoff, MD, MPH; Adam J. Zolotor, MD, MPH; Kathi L. Makoroff, MD; et al. Has This Prepubertal Girl Been Sexually Abused?, p. 2790]
If any doctor or medical provider today observed a transection on the inferior half of the hymen of a prepubertal female patient, he/she would be required to make a report for suspected sexual abuse and an explanation would be required for how that healed injury got there. In forty years of research, this finding has not been seen in any other instance besides from penetrating trauma. In prepubertal girls, it is indicative of sexual abuse unless it can be shown otherwise.

What the evidence says

The evidence says JonBenet had been subjected to at least one penetration of the vagina through the hymenal membrane prior to her murder. The penetration caused a complete laceration of the inferior hymenal membrane. After the laceration healed, a transection and other structural changes of the hymen remained.
The age of the prior injury could not be determined, but based on his research on the healing of hymenal lacerations of prepubertal girls, it was McCann's opinion that it was more than ten days old. His research has shown that "most signs of an acute [hymenal laceration] injury were gone within 7 to 10 days." Some of the experts thought the prior injury could have been weeks or months old.
While the evidence could conclusively prove only one prior penetration, the experts believed there had been more than one instance of penetration/sexual contact and that JonBenet's genital findings indicated abuse that had been repeated or ongoing. They were unable to determine how many incidents over what period of time.
Four of the five experts (Sirotnak, Monteleone, Rao, McCann) were confident in their opinion that JonBenet's genital findings were diagnostic of sexual abuse. One (Krugman) could not disagree with that assessment, but lacking certain forensic evidence (i.e., the victim's testimony, the confirmed presence of sperm, or an STI), was unwilling to assume a sexual motive for the abuse. He felt there was evidence only of physical abuse of the genitals.

What else could explain the prior penetration/ hymenal trauma besides sexual abuse?

There are three known causes of transections in the inferior hymenal rim in prepubertal girls — penetrative sexual abuse, accidental penetrating trauma, and surgical intervention.
Most accidental genital injuries sustained by children are straddle-type injuries that involve a fall onto the horizontal bar of a bicycle, jungle gym, or picket fence. This type of accident involves compression of the soft tissues against the bony margins of the pelvic outlet. Trauma is usually limited to the external structures of the genital area (e.g., labia, clitoral hood, fourchette, perineum).
Accidental penetrating or impalement injuries that involve trauma to the hymen are relatively rare:
Of 161 accidental genital injuries reported in the literature, 3.7% involved the hymen.
[Child Abuse: Medical Diagnosis and Management, 4th ed. Antoinette Laskey and Andrew Sirotnak (eds.), p. 359]
However, they do occur and the resulting injuries can mimic those of sexual abuse. In such cases, it is important that the cause of the injury be confirmed.
Whether an acute or healed genital or anal injury is identified, it is incumbent on the medical professional to obtain a complete history of the nature of the injury. [...]
Key differences in the history of accidental trauma, such as a straddle injury, are that accidental injuries are more commonly observed by a third party, medical attention is sought immediately after the injury, a scene-of-injury visit confirms the plausibility of the injuries and the accompanying history, and the pattern of injury is consistent with the history.
[Child Abuse: Medical Diagnosis and Management, 4th ed. Antoinette Laskey and Andrew Sirotnak (eds.), p. 359]
If JonBenet's prior hymenal injury was the result of an accident or a past surgical procedure, it should be reflected in her medical records and easy to prove. An accidental penetrating injury that results in a complete laceration of the hymen is considered severe, one that would be painful and cause bleeding. It would be expected that most parents or caretakers would seek medical attention for their child's injury.
We know the Ramseys were not timid or frugal when it came to getting medical attention for JonBenet's injuries and ailments. We have records of her being seen by the doctor for various bumps, falls, and injuries, such as a bent fingernail from a fall, a bruised nose from faceplanting at a grocery store, a bump on the brow from a tripping fall, and a small cut to the cheek from a golf club swing. If JonBenet had sustained an accidental genital injury that resulted in a severe laceration, I find it very hard to believe she would not have been taken to the doctor for such an injury when she was taken for lesser injuries and ailments.
Clearly, there was nothing in her medical records that could account for such an injury or the Ramseys would have provided it to police.

Open Letter to Steve Huffman and the Board of Directors of Reddit, Inc – If you believe in standing up to hate and supporting black lives, you need to act
Dear Steve,
On June 1, you shared a letter on Reddit’s blog “Remember the Human – Black Lives Matter”. In this letter, you claim “as Snoos, we do not tolerate hate, racism, and violence, and while we have work to do to fight these on our platform, our values are clear.”
As of today, neither you nor any other Reddit admins have shared this letter anywhere on reddit.com. However, the response to this message was swift on Twitter, where you were rightfully labeled as hypocritical based on your long and well-recorded history of defending racism and white supremacy on this site.
Among the many responses was this message from former CEO of Reddit, Ellen Pao.
I am obligated to call you out: You should have shut down the_donald instead of amplifying it and its hate, racism, and violence. So much of what is happening now lies at your feet. You don't get to say BLM when reddit nurtures and monetizes white supremacy and hate all day long
Many others shared links and screenshots of your past statements saying “Open racism and slurs are fine to post on Reddit”.
The problem of Reddit’s leadership supporting and providing a platform for racist users and hateful communities has long been an issue. Nearly six years ago, dozens of subreddits signed the original open letter to the Reddit admins calling for action. While the Reddit admins acknowledged the letter and said it was a high priority to address this issue, extremely little has been done in the intervening years.
On June 5, you shared this update on /Announcements, Upcoming changes to our content policy, our board, and where we’re going from here. In the post, you stated that there is a need for continued adjustments of Reddit’s content policy to address racism and that this remains a priority. These continued statements that you hear us, that this is a priority, or that you are working on it are not enough. It has been five years since your return as CEO and this still remains Reddit’s most glaring problem.
Steve, if you and Reddit genuinely care about the values of standing up to racism and hate, then you need to back it up with real action. As moderators on this website who have dedicated countless hours to keeping this site running, we call on Reddit to take the following steps:
At /AgainstHateSubreddits, we have laid out the many failures of Steve time and again to stand up to white supremacy on this site time and time and time again.
With a website with the impact of Reddit on the broader conversations being held in communities around the world, this website needs real leadership and real action.
We hope that Reddit will not just share empty platitudes — but will take a meaningful stand against hate, and take these recommendations to heart.
This letter is co-signed by more than 200 300 350 430 550 650 800 communities representing well over 200 hundreds of millions of subscribers:

2020.09.24 16:00 Angel466 [Bob the hobo] A Celestial Wars Spin-Off Part 0170

PART ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY
Robbie sat on the subway, staring blankly out the windows at the dark walls of the tunnels until light indicated another station was approaching. Having had his little talk with Daniel, he asked if he could be driven back to Bellevue. He knew Daniel was watching him with weaver eyes, but he just couldn’t bring himself to give a shit. He didn’t want to realm-step anywhere at that point. He wanted normal. He wanted … human.
Pop, you utter stick, he thought shaking his head. Six months. Six months his twice great grandfather and Aunt Collette had been surfing through his head, bringing him up to speed on everything that was shifting and bending, and it never once occurred to either of them to mention that little detail about him being an antichrist, even once?
Daniel had commandeered a black and white and had it drop him off at the hospital, but that was hours ago. He had poked his head in to check on Mason and found the day’s events had worn his friend out. That, or he’d been sedated. Either way, he was sleeping peacefully, and no one would ever know that a month ago he’d been pulverised into a pulp.
That in itself was going to be a problem. Angelo hadn’t really been given a choice about the beatdown Mason received, but it was clear from Mason’s interview that morning that he still completely blamed Angelo for it. That had been when Daniel went for snacks while Mason cried his heart out on his shoulder. Short of doing the unthinkable, they were probably never going to be roommates again.
“We’ll figure something out, buddy,” he promised, without actually touching Mason for fear he would wake him up. “Hang in there.”
But the hours he waited for news on Angelo was a killer. Security was at an all-time high now that an attempt had been made, and no one wanted to tell him anything. He tried to tell them that he was Angelo’s legal next of kin, but that didn’t help. Then he tried flirting. He made new friends and was given a few phone numbers discreetly, but no one was willing to breach protocol and tell him about Angelo. Not until he made a call to Daniel and was told to pass his phone to the nearest officer.
Then, and only then, had he been escorted into the intensive care unit where Angelo was hooked up to half a dozen machines. “They say it’s a miracle he’s still alive,” the female officer who’d walked him in whispered quietly at his side. “He’s defying all the odds. If you want my opinion, he’s had so much gear in his system, he’s immune to the rest of it.”
Robbie wasn’t sure if there was a deliberate barb in that or not, but after such a long day, he wasn’t about to let it slide. “You do realise he was chained in a room, drugged into addiction, then put to work on his knees to feed that addiction, right?”
The woman visibly blanched. “I didn’t realise it was forced.”
“And now that he’s going to testify against the very animals who did that to him, they want him dead before he can. So yeah, if he’s in there fighting to stay alive after all of that when every other lick would’ve given up and gone home, good for him.”
“I didn’t mean anything by what I said.”
Sure you did. “How long will he be asleep?”
“I can ask for you.”
“I’d appreciate that, beautiful. I promised him I’d be right behind him, so he’s going expect me to be here when he wakes up.”
She went back to the door and opened it, and while still keeping Robbie in her field of vision, she asked for the doctor to be brought in. They were only kept waiting a few minutes before a young, Hispanic doctor let himself in. He looked at both the uniformed officer and Robbie and grew annoyed. “I’ve already made my report,” he said, “And your patient is not the only patient I have in this hospital.”
“Please,” Robbie said, holding a hand up to try and circumvent the lecture, whether it was deserved or not. “I’m Angelo’s next of kin, and no one’s telling me anything. Is he going to be okay? How long will he be asleep? What’s happening with him? Will he…?”
“Alright! Alright,” the doctor said, raising both hands in a placating manner. “I didn’t realise you were Mr Trevino’s next of kin.” He went over to the clipboard at the end of the bed and flipped to the back page. “Richard, wasn’t it?” he asked, trying his best to make it appear a casual name drop.
“Robert,” Robbie corrected. “Robbie O’Hara. Come on, doc, he’s my best friend! How long’s he likely to be asleep? I want to be here when he wakes up, because he was really scared before he went under.”
The doctor sighed and lowered the board. “Right. Sorry. I had to be sure. The truth is, we don’t know exactly how long he’ll be asleep. My guess, maybe sometime tomorrow at least. Based on his bloodwork, he simply shouldn’t be alive. He’s got one hell of a guardian angel sitting on his shoulder, that’s for sure.” He looked between Angelo and Robbie and shook his head. “Either that, or he’s the luckiest man on the planet.”
Column A … column B, Robbie thought to himself, without meeting the doctor’s eyes. “Is there any way I can be called if it looks like he’s starting to come around? I mean, I can be here like really quickly if I drop everything and get here.”
The doctor looked Robbie over. “I can make a note at the bottom of his chart, but I can’t promise anyone will see it if he starts to revive. Even then, you have to be ready for the chance that … he won’t be the same.”
Robbie frowned. “What do you mean?”
“Mr Trevino has a lot of things working against him right now. Even if he does recover, there’s no guarantee to what mental capacity that recovery will be. As I said, by all accounts, he shouldn’t be alive now. He’s defying the odds just by breathing.”
“He’ll be back,” Robbie insisted, though in truth he wasn’t so sure anymore. What if that wasn’t the case? What if, in his own egotistical fashion, he had accidentally turned Angelo into the world’s first living zombie? Especially given what Daniel told him about things. His power didn’t lean towards ‘good’.
He felt the doctor’s hand on one elbow, while someone else took his other. “Why don’t you sit down for a minute, son,” he doctor suggested and he suddenly felt his backside being pushed into a chair. Not that he was fighting. The doctor knelt down in front of him. “He’s alive, Robert, and we…”
“Robbie.”
The doctor paused deliberately. “Robbie, then. Take the win where it is. He’s still here. No one knows what the future holds for Mr Trevino. Especially not us. He might even wake up and be perfectly fine. No one knows. I just need you to be aware of the possibilities.” He looked up at the female officer who stood to Robbie’s side. “I have to get back to my rounds. Medically, as his next of kin, you can sit here as long as you like, but the police may prefer to keep the room clear.”
“We do need to go, Robbie,” the female officer said, confirming the doctor’s assessment.
After two deep breaths, Robbie regained his feet and went over to Angelo. “I’ll be back, buddy. Promise,” he said, squeezing Angelo’s foot ever so slightly.
It was with a heavy heart that he left the hospital, and half an hour later, the subway he was on pulled into Houston Street which was the stop ahead of the one that would take him home.
He exited the train and made his way up the stairs to King Street. People milled around him, but no one bothered him, which was probably a good thing. He was more focused on his jewellery than the road ahead anyway. He wanted the longer walk. He wanted to think. What he really wanted was to pretend the last six hours hadn’t happened. He had been so excited to learn of his heritage. Now, he was scared shitless of it.
I’m a goddamn antichrist, kid. And so are you, cuz.
Which meant he wasn’t one of the good guys. He was … one of the others. Did it matter that he didn’t know?
It took about thirty yards of walking before he realised a familiar dark blue SUV that looked more black thanks to the night sky with matching dark windows was creeping along at his side, keeping pace with him. “Really, dude?” he asked, though it probably came out as more of a whine. He really didn’t want any more divine interventions.
The driver’s side window came down to reveal Angus behind the wheel. “Get in,” he said.
“Isn’t this where I shout, you’ll never take me alive?”
“We’re half a mile from the apartment. I will crawl this car every inch of the way until you get in.”
Robbie stopped and huffed. He would too. “Fine,” he said, stepping out onto the road in front of the car as Angus reached across and opened the passenger door for him. “But only because I don’t want you to incur a million dollars’ worth of fines on my account.”
“It’s not like I’ll pay them.” As soon as Robbie was situated, Angus picked up speed. “You look like you could use a drink.”
“An antichrist and a true gryps war commander walked into a bar.”
Angus smirked. “At least you haven’t completely lost your sense of humour.”
“Did I just turn my best friend into a living zombie?”
Angus’ head whipped to him with such a look of surprise it was almost comical. “Okay,” he said, dropping the indicator to turn right instead of going straight ahead. “Change of plans.”
Robbie sat up, even more concerned when they turned right at Vadam and went back down Hudson in precisely the opposite direction to home. “No, I … I have to cook dinner…”
“Soho has plenty of food delivery services, and I’m sure everyone in the apartment knows how to use their phones to place an order when they’re hungry.”
A few minutes later, Angus pulled into the parking shoulder just south of Pier 45 and turned off the ignition. He undid his seatbelt and reached across Robbie to open the glove compartment where he pulled out a large, screw-top flask. “C’mon,” he said, thumping it against Robbie’s chest as he opened the door and stepped out.
Robbie was tempted to sit in the car with his arms folded in stubborn defiance, but so far Angus hadn’t led him astray. So far.
“What’s in there?” he asked, joining him around the front of the car.
“Your pop’s specialty.”
Robbie jerked to a halt. “You know we’re not allowed to drink alcohol in public in this city.”
Angus chuckled. “Don’t worry, lad. The police aren’t going to come anywhere near us tonight, and even if they did,” —he shook the flask— “their machines will never register this as alcoholic.”
“Because it’ll take one whiff of it and blow up?”
“Like a litmus paper test on a nuclear fuel rod.” He gestured to the walkway that led out to the pier. “Let’s go and find somewhere quiet.”
“Why do you have ambrosia in the car?”
Angus looked across at him and smirked. “You’ve met Llyr, haven’t you?”
Robbie snickered.
They walked past the grass mounds and trees that had been planted for people to sit under and past the sunshade that now cast shadows due to the lit streetlight on either corner of the pier end. Angus put his foot on the bottom rail and twisted slightly with his forearm on the top rail to watch Robbie bringing up the rear. “So, what exactly did that idiot say to you that has you convinced you turned Angelo into a zombie?” He broke the seal of the flask and took a sip as if believing he was going to need it.
“I’m an antichrist.”
“And?”
“What do you mean, ‘and’ man? I’m a fucking antichrist!”
“And what exactly do you think that means?” He took another sip.
When Robbie held out his hand for the flask, Angus ignored it. Robbie clenched his fist in frustration. “Seriously, dude? You’re not even gonna share?”
“When you stop thinking like a human with an overactive imagination and start looking at the situation objectively as a member of the divine, I’ll share my divine drink with you.”
“What does that even mean?”
“What do you think it means to be an antichrist?”
Robbie opened his mouth to ram down Angus' throat exactly what he thought being an antichrist was. But the words never left his mouth. All of his presumptions were based on human movies and bogeyman threats. They were all different, but they had one uniting aspect. “It means I’m evil.”
Angus made a noise that was uncannily like a computerised buzzer of negativity. “Try again.”
Not believing Angus was ever going to share his drink, Robbie turned to stare out at the clock tower over in New Jersey. A quick shift of his vision allowed him to see the clock face and he sucked in a sharp breath. It was after ten!
“Don’t worry about the time, Robbie. Just answer the question.”
Robbie shot a sideways daggered look at the man who relaxed more with every mouthful of ambrosia he swallowed.
“How am I supposed to look at this objectively when being human is all I know?”
Angus rolled to his side. “You have the blood of the most powerful families running in your veins, lad. It’s no different than if you had two different nationalities in your genetic makeup.”
“Oh, there kinda is,” Robbie growled in disagreement. “The difference between being English and Irish isn’t a matter of growing horns and setting buildings on fire versus putting someone on their knees with a look.”
“Now you’re getting it,” Angus grinned, kneecapping Robbie’s rant as he took a third sip. “Good and evil are relative before you get established. Sure, where you’re raised can influence it. But that’s the same with everyone. A demon born and raised in hell isn’t likely to bat an eye at someone being skinned alive. But you were born and raised here. You’ve been influenced by the world you live in.”
Another sip. “And if you think all angels are the epitome of goodness and happy-happy-joy-joy, I’ll be the first to bust your bubble on that score too.”
“They aren’t?”
Angus flared his eyes and shook his head. “No. They’re a long way from perfect once you get them away from their establishment field. We’ve got a few stationed here, and some of them long for the glory days of battle and bloodshed. They’re not going to find it, of course, and they’re definitely not going to complain for fear of pissing off your uncle, but you’ve got a better chance of getting a demon to sing you a lullaby than one of them. Mainly because the demon would be too shit scared of you not to.”
“Because I’m evil.”
Robbie didn’t even see him move, but suddenly he was struck in the back of the head hard enough to drive his upper torso completely over the top rail. “OW!” he shouted as he straightened back up again, rubbing the back of his head that he was sure was already starting to swell into a lump. “What the puck, man?”
“If you haven’t figured out by now the fundamental difference between being an antichrist and THE Antichrist, you deserve that all night long.”
Nobody had rung his bell that hard in … ever!
“So this is how this is going to go down? You’re going to bash me in the head every time you don’t like what I say?”
Yet another casual sip. Robbie was beginning to think there’d be none left for him to try at this rate. “You’re better than this, lad. You’re letting your human prejudice cloud your judgement. Being an antichrist doesn’t mean shit except that you come from a certain line of people. What you do with it is up to you. Nothing’s changed. Daniel’s been one for almost eighty years, and he’s still the same NYPD butt-monkey asshole he’s always been.”
Robbie wondered why Angus had been so derogatorily specific in his name-calling when it was still just the two of them on the pier.
That was, until one of the pylons holding the sailcloth behind them broke away from the rest and slowly moulded into the missing detective. “You always were a prick,” Daniel growled, stalking forward to snatch the flask out of Angus’ angled hand. Two seconds later he was helping himself to a deep swig.
“You were following us?” Robbie was gobsmacked.
Daniel’s gaze met his with a look of duh. “I had the officers let me know when you left the hospital. I started tailing you as soon as you walked out the front doors.”
“And how many faces did you become?”
“Actually, I thought the Alsatian that had to realm-step every half a block to keep up with us was hilarious.”
Daniel’s scowl darkened and he speared Angus with a lethal glare. “Fuck you, you eagle-eyed prick! If you knew I was there, you could’ve at least slowed down.”
Angus pressed his lips together wryly. “You needed the exercise.”
“Double fuck you, then.”
Annnnd … since everyone seemed to be in a better mood, Robbie held out his hand for the flask once more. “So, do I get a drink now?”
Angus sobered and looked at Daniel with a quick headshake, but Daniel’s expression grew mischievous and he passed Robbie the coveted flask. “Sure. I’m not on duty.”
Robbie held the flask in both hands and sniffed the contents. Ambrosia. Drink of the Gods. Pop’s secret recipe. It smelt just like ordinary wine.
Robbie couldn’t help but look at the two older men to see if this were a con; one of whom was grinning at him, while the other rolled his eyes.
Two antichrists and a true gryps war commander walked into a bar,” Robbie said as a toast …
..and downed his first swallow of ambrosia.
