What is all this about? (updated Oct 24)
  • On Sept 27 Azerbaijan with direct involvement of Turkey using its Jihadist mercenaries from Syria and elsewhere launched a devastating war against the de facto Nagorno Karabakh Republic in an attempt to resolve the lingering Karabakh conflict using extreme and remorseless violence despite the existing peace process while rejecting UN's calls to stop fighting and also rejecting UN's appeal for a global ceasefire due to the pandemic.
  • Independent organisations have raised alarms of genocide (23 Oct), ethnic cleansing and a humanitarian catastrophe for the sieged indigenous Armenian population of Nagorno Karabakh.
  • Azerbaijan has intentionally violated international law by severely damaging 130 cities and villages including the capital of Nagorno Karabakh Stepanakert using aerial bombings, drone attacks, precision missiles, smerch, semi-ballistic strikes and artillery means as well as usage of cluster bombs against civilian settlements causing half of the Armenian civilians to be forced to leave and the remaining to live in underground shelters.
  • As of Oct 24 Azerbaijan's concerted destruction against the ethnic Armenian civilians of Nagorno Karabakh has resulted in 40 civilian killed, 120 wounded and 13100 civilian infrastructure destroyed, including homes, apartments, hospitals, schools, civilian vehicles as well as key civilian infrastructure vital to the survival of the civilian population. The destruction includes cultural heritage manifested by the bombing of a 19th century Armenian church.
  • As of Oct 24, Armenian KIA amount to a thousand, making it higher per capita than the KIA of the Vietnam War.
  • Neither the maxim of "there is no military solution to the conflict" always repeated by the US, France, EU, NATO, among others, nor all the calls for an unconditional ceasefire and resumption of negotiations made by the UN, EU, NATO, France, Russia and the US, among others, nor the two humanitarian ceasefires brokered by Russia and France which were summarily violated by Azerbaijan with backing from Turkey, have persuaded the latter to halt the violence.
  • As of Oct 24, after all the devastation, heavy destruction of armour of both sides, and over 6000 killed personnel of the Azerbaijan Armed Forces, Turkish-backed Jihadi mercenaries, and Turkish Armed Forces, as per the military leadership of Armenia, Azerbaijan is in control of some of the southern areas of the surrounding territories to the south and a small portion to the north east - all of them low lands.
What's up with Nagorno Karabakh?
  • Nagorno Karabakh has been an officially bordered self-governed autonomous region since 1923 which de facto became independent from the Soviet Union before Armenia and Azerbaijan gained their independence. Nagorno Karabakh has never been governed by the state of Azerbaijan and has never been under control of an independent Azerbaijan.
  • Nagorno Karabakh has had continuous majority indigenous Armenian presence since long before Azerbaijan became a state in 1918. Karabakh Armenians have their own culture, dialect, heritage and history going back millennia.
  • Nagorno Karabakh does not have the status of an occupied territory and it is not referred to as such by the international community, the UN, OSCE, third party experts, and all reputable international media. Nagorno Karabakh is considered by the international community as a break-away enclave where its Armenian indigenous population has agency with legal backing. Nagorno Karabakh Autonomous Oblast as was known during the USSR-era made several petitions to join Armenia, the last one backed by the European Parliament in 1988, culminating in an independence referendum.
  • The final status of Nagorno Karabakh is pending the UN-mandated OSCE settlement as also agreed to by Azerbaijan on the basis of the Helsinki Final Act of 1975 among other norms of international law. The UN-mandated OSCE led by the US, France and Russia, and backed by the UN, EU, NATO and Council of Europe, among others, non-optionally applies the principle of self-determination to Nagorno Karabakh.
  • There are four existing UN Security Council resolutions from 1993 which called for cease of hostilities and mandated the conflict to be settled under the OSCE framework, with the latter determining the final status of Nagorno Karabakh. These resolutions were triggered because of the capture of surrounding territories around Nagorno Karabakh by the Nagorno Karabakh forces during the final months of the Karabakh War in 1993. These resolutions do NOT recognise Nagorno Karabakh as occupied; do NOT demand withdrawals from Nagorno Karabakh; do NOT recognise Armenia as having occupied any territories; do NOT demand any withdrawals by Armenia from any territories - which is why there were no grounds for invoking Chapter VII either.
  • Same as above also applies to the only other existing non-binding 2008 UN General Assembly resolution which was rejected by the OSCE co-chairs (US, France and Russia) for attempting to bypass the UN-mandated OSCE framework to determine the final status of Nagorno Karabakh. The vast majority of UN member states abstained from voting in favour of this Azerbaijani-drafted unilateral resolution, and the vast majority of states which voted in favour were members of OIC and GUAM.
  • The ceasefire agreement of 1994 had three signatories: Armenia, Azerbaijan and Nagorno Karabakh.
  • This is an authoritative map of Nagorno Karabakh with the surrounding territories with original place names courtesy of Thomas de Waal.
  • The Crisis Group's Karabakh Conflict Visual Explainer has a detailed timeline of the conflict.
  • The constitution of the de facto republic states that Nagorno Karabakh Republic and Artsakh Republic are synonymous, while not laying claim on the surrounding territories.
Is there a peace plan?
Is there a neutral narrative of the conflict?
  • UK-based Conciliation Resources helped Armenian and Azerbaijani journalists to jointly produce a neutral documentary where everything you see and hear is agreed by both parties, watch it online here. Tom de Waal's Black Garden book is considered to be a comprehensive and balanced work on the conflict.
I do not live in Armenia, how can I help?
Disclaimer: Borders are fluid in 5th generation wars. Fog of war exists. Official news is not independent news. Some sources of information are of unknown origin, such as Telegram channels often used to report events by users. There are independent journalists from reputable international media in Nagorno Karabakh.

2020.10.26 02:31 1530320584 Research about DARKANIME INC: the owner and the legality of their content.

Research about DARKANIME INC: the owner and the legality of their content.
So, after the topics exposed in this post: https://www.reddit.com/SakisanNoBashitsu/comments/jhmxbn/question_about_darkanimeinc_site_vs_darkanimecom/ I started resarching about, the well known here, darkanime.com, and came at some conclusions: First, from what a saw, I'm not in possition to afirm the real conection between darkanime.com and the .onion darkanimeinc, but, as anyone who investigated the site could see; darkanime.com is, indeed, part of a "company" called "gudgell enterprises", this "company" worked in the "hosting" of all kind of anime and, especificly, hentai images and videos.
Despite of that, it seems to be that, in the early ages of internet, there was something called "web rings" that were lists of afilliated websites. In darkanime.com we can find this one, which include an interesting site called:
Japanimation Station Express.
It's worth of a more deep investigation, from what I saw is a buy/seller of VHS and DVDs adult tapes. They used to sell, at some moment, at least all of this tapes (mostly hentai): https://web.archive.org/web/20050311052702/http://www.j-s-express.com/acat.txt
In the .txt we can find this, address information:
ORDER FORM BY SIGNING AT THE (X) YOU ARE STATING THAT YOU ARE 18 OR OLDER SIGNATURE (X)____________________________DATE______________________ SHIPPING INFO NAME:____________________________________ CITY:_____________________________________STATE_____________ ZIP CODE____________ COUNTRY_________________ WE ARE SHIPPING TO UNITED STATES , CANADA AND MEXICO ONLY ON ADULT MERCHANDISE. This is really important because it's the proof that they were directly conected with darkanime, ["[email protected]](mailto:"[email protected])" appears to be the old mail addres from the administrator of darkanime, at first I thought that, the VHS site, could be somekind of providers for this last one but this email addres can confirm that this site, at least, is a side page of the administrator of darkanime.com. The owner, of this sites it's also known as "SAKURA"

https://preview.redd.it/36icz81rdcv51.png?width=386&format=png&auto=webp&s=9fe3ef2a345f43158fc8999771059e441cab7d95
So, another thing we could take from this page is that, apparently, gudgell enterprises have a mascot: An animegirl called "Shisakura", who's autor I'm going to reveal later.

https://preview.redd.it/wdmqckurdcv51.png?width=469&format=png&auto=webp&s=17403e9e9f4227ef1cbb6e574e32f73217893bfb

Also, we can see that there are some kind of connection between THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF REBECCA FORSTADT (it's an official fan managed site of the voice actress) and darkanime because that site is linked in all the related webs of it. But, what's the connection? Well, it's really revealing that: the owner of this weird/gross hentai/guro/anime site, darkanime, who has the email addres ["[email protected]](mailto:"[email protected])"; the administrator of the re-sell VHS website, JAPANIMATION STATION EXPRESS, who apparently have the same exact email addres of the owner of darkanime; the creator of Shisakura; and the manager of the Rebecca Foestadt website, it's, neither more or less than, a woman called Shannon GUDGELL

In the archive of Jun 11 of 2004 we can see that Shannon Gudgell is the creator of Shisakura:

https://preview.redd.it/7rys19audcv51.png?width=584&format=png&auto=webp&s=ba06bf33d743e5b0b9e453e07013f85c68d1ba87
An email from a Robetech forum proofs that Rebecca Forstadt website was runned by Shannon:

https://preview.redd.it/lajscbzudcv51.png?width=1256&format=png&auto=webp&s=52399eb5f55c1aaec0300dd52962b04825db6ddf
However, Despite all above, I couldn't find anything more about Shannon Gudgell, only this: http://www.geocities.ws/joefromkalamazoo/gbookarchive.html
Sakura was her nickname, at that year (idk when) she was 29 and listed her website in that page.

https://preview.redd.it/ayvfkfuvdcv51.png?width=607&format=png&auto=webp&s=63e6056dfff58841611d89e6b1795495278e2464
Geocities appears to be some kind of web ring but, this, can host some sites. Related with Japananimation we can find the Leviathan, in this site we could see that the leviathan had by name JAPANIMATION STATION EXPRESS, but, like I say bellow, it's only another hentai images website. On the other hand, I couldn't found darkanime in geocities.

https://preview.redd.it/ebzss6hwdcv51.png?width=1304&format=png&auto=webp&s=436f0e05cb4c41277709dd424f54f11d00b495ee
Another sites, because of their owners seems to be the same or related with the email adresses ["@darkanime.com](mailto:"@darkanime.com)" or ["[email protected]](mailto:"[email protected])", that are property of GUDGELL ENTREPRISES:
the Leviathan
Hentai downloadable images in .zip archives
Darkanime.com
World Hentai Organization
Another webring of darkanime
Little Ole Washu Productions
I didn't understand what it was about but I think it was just a personal blog of Shannon who had a gallery of images of anime characters.
THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF REBECCA FORSTADT

Others things to have in mind:
  • Darkanime could have been, also, a "real" studio of animation. As you can see here.
  • Japananimation station HAD, and this is important, a online store or, at least, articles posted in https://www.rightstufanime.com/ , an official merchandising of anime website.
All this links directs us to a dead, old version, of that site in question.

https://preview.redd.it/b69p0dfxdcv51.png?width=871&format=png&auto=webp&s=a6eed0fbd1108835759d4873d1fe1ca836f3f493
In the tag "Info" we can see that the "search" link guide us to the "search index" of rightstuf.com

https://preview.redd.it/4rpvfg3ydcv51.png?width=1304&format=png&auto=webp&s=912c206d548fde8acba9f7235f02274fbf9a238c
https://preview.redd.it/znkzl8fdhcv51.png?width=1302&format=png&auto=webp&s=b525d3d4b256d67ea7c443b9cbde6b0ea29c2ce0

This could imply that darkanime, japanimation and GUDGELL ENTERPRISES, had NO ILLEGAL STUFF IN THEIR WEBSITES, because, as they say in Japananimation, " WE SELL NO BOOTLEGS HERE! ONLY REAL HONEST MERCHANDISE "
According to Wikipedia:
Studio Ironcat was a small publishing company based in Fredericksburg, Virginia, dedicated to publication of manga and later, Amerimanga. The company is most known for its publication of the first volume of Megatokyo, a prominent webcomic, as well as the flamboyant style of one of its founders, Steve Bennett&action=edit&redlink=1). The company was also known for regular turmoil within its wake, primarily during the years 2001–2003. One of these led to a period where the company did business under a different name as I.C. Entertainment.
They used to publish things with another name, they had legal issues and the conclusions were never released. But, I, personally, don't think they are related.

There is no conclusions to be honest, but after what I exposed, we could doubt about the hosting of an "illegal" content such as GFAP in darkanime, and this could be the possible disconnection between the darkanime.com and the .onion websites.

2020.10.25 17:46 dogeman87 I found a dangerous treasure. [Final]

Part 1

Breaking into a museum is hard. The movies portray robbers as geniuses, heists as highly planned events that baffle security. The protagonists- criminals, really- smile and celebrate when they pull off the stunt, and authorities are left clueless.
In reality, it’s almost impossible to get away with robbery. There are so many ways it can go wrong. First you have to get out of the building. Security cameras, guards, eyewitnesses, alarm systems that contact the police… there are an infinite number of ways you can get screwed. And that’s only on the inside. When you come out, there are security cameras on every corner, ones on traffic lights and stores and even fucking parks that might pick you up. There’s the matter of a license plate that might lead back to you. There are people that can claim they saw a certain car leaving the scene of the crime. Hell, if you leave identifiable fibers or hairs on the scene you might be caught.
I did my research. Failure was not an option. No matter how hard it was, no matter what the person risk might be, I had to return the treasure. My family, my friends, possibly the world would be doomed if I didn’t pull it off. I don’t like to be overdramatic. In this case, I think I have underemphasized the importance of my mission. If I fucked up, I was committing the entire human race to a gruesome death. Who knew how the coins worked? Maybe they would convince Putin to start a nuclear war. Maybe the next American president would start World War III.
So I recruited help. I still was in contact with a friend who was up to the task. Jack is both a movie buff and a security guard. He had seen the best of both worlds. He knew what parts of heist movies were realistic and what parts were complete horseshit. He could recommend how I evade the guards and security measures at the museum, what I might expect to run into, the precautions that I would have to take.
I never told him what I was doing. He would never have helped otherwise. I told him I was interested in writing a book and that I wanted to make sure my heist was as accurate as possible. God bless him, he believed me. I don’t read much, have never written more than a couple essays in my life, and he thought that I was serious.
His advice also taught me one important lesson: guards are often naïve. You ever see a movie where security is laughably bad, oblivious to an ongoing robbery and incapable of containing it when they find out? That’s partially true. A lot of things in movies and books are true, especially the ones that seem unrealistic. Lawyers that harangue law enforcement to protect their client? It happens. Incompetent law enforcement that botches an investigation? I think we all know how real that is, given the current happenings of the world. The same applied to museum security… or so I thought.
There were a lot of hurdles to overcome. First, I had to master the entrance and escape. I could not be identified outside of the building. This would prove more difficult than I imagined. The first order of business was to get another car. I’m not exactly rich, so it was difficult, to say the least. I settled on my cousin’s Honda Civic, a white model that was indistinguishable from any others on the road. No bumper stickers, no scratches or mods. Unbeknownst to him, I visited a junkyard and purchased an old license plate as a “souvenir,” then used that on the Civic.
I purchased a ski mask. You might be thinking that wearing a mask is cliché, that only people in movies do it and that there are better ways of concealing yourself. Wrong again. True, there might be better ways of going undetected, but a mask was the easiest. I also got some baggy black clothing to blend in with the darkness and conceal any details about my body they might glean from cameras.
That was the final problem: the street cameras. Eyewitnesses, too. I was probably fine with the precautions I had taken. My clothes would get burned after I used them, the car was owned by someone three hundred miles away, and I and the car would not be identifiable. Still, I would probably be recorded, and they might see a man with a ski mask driving a Honda Civic. The odds of them tracing it back to the correct one- and to me, no less- were staggeringly low, but was there a way of being more cautious?
I decided it was impossible. For every camera I avoided or tried to sabotage, another might capture me. I had to hope that what I had done already would be enough.
My preparations up to that point were the easy part. Next, I had to deal with actually entering the museum.
I managed to get a floor plan of the archive rooms online. As sketchy as it was, I went onto the dark web and hired a hacker to help me out. He found records of exactly where the treasure was being kept. I did not tell him exactly what I was looking for, only that I wanted the floor plans. I made sure to use a VPN whenever I spoke with him and received his messages. I even bought an old laptop from a city fifty miles away so that I could use that instead of my own. I accessed the dark web in public places and then scrapped the laptop once I transferred everything over to a hard drive.
I determined the best route to enter and exit the museum. There were cameras everywhere. Disabling them would be difficult. They were impossible to avoid, and anything I might do to destroy them en masse- an EMP, for example- would tip security off. The police would be called, and if that happened there was no way I would escape in time.
There was also the alarm system. I had to get through two locked doors which, if broken through, would automatically call the police. They would be there in minutes, way before I exited with my treasure. I would be caught and put in prison. The evidence would be irrefutable. While I rotted in jail, I would only be able to watch as more family and friends died or were irreparably harmed.
I decided that the cameras were unavoidable. I could not disable them all, and even disabling certain ones might give clues about my movements and identity. I had no idea how, but I was aware that an investigation would reveal things I had not considered. Most stories you see show the protagonists thinking one step ahead of the police, of the FBI, of the entire fucking government at times. Truth is, you never are able to cover every angle. You always leave some bit of evidence behind, and it might not be enough to catch you, but it also might be a death sentence. You can’t consider every possibility. I liken it to a professor making an exam: the professor has all the power, they can create whatever questions they want, and no matter how much a student prepares he or she will encounter something that they never expected.
So I did nothing about the cameras. I figured my disguise would be sufficient. That obviously left the problem of being spotted. My hacker determined that only the alarms would call the police. Only the guards were watching the cameras. Some places like small banks do go through constant police surveillance, but a museum holding tens of thousands of artifacts? Good luck. It would take a hell of a lot of personnel to watch every room.
I had caught a break. All I had to do was ensure the guards in the video room didn’t alert the police. At the same time, it made my job a lot harder. I had to somehow distract or eliminate them. I say eliminate, not kill. Murder was always out of the question for me, and I suspect that it would have made the investigation much more rigorous had the police found bodies. I stood a greater chance of being discovered. And if I killed more than one man… well, I was looking at a long time in prison.
I couldn’t ask Jack to contact the museum for me. I might have been able to set up an interview with security there, learn about their patterns and their break times, but it was too risky. I had already told Jack about my intentions, and I didn’t know if he would make the connection. Most likely he wouldn’t, because I asked him questions a couple weeks in advance, and I figured the robbery would not be a big news story. Still, telling him my intentions had been a risk. It was a small risk, though, because I knew him and I knew the likelihood of him hearing about what would happen. No operation is without risk. If he was my only loose link, I was okay with that.
Talking to museum security, though? I’d be asking to get caught. What would they think if some guy started asking all kinds of questions and then something was stolen under their nose? I knew the police wouldn’t find more evidence than that to connect me to the crime, but I wouldn’t have an alibi, and, as I said earlier, the cops have fucked up investigations. Certainly the system has convicted innocent men, some with very little evidence at all. I had no illusions about my ability to defend myself at trial. If they found enough circumstantial evidence to their liking, I’d be arrested and tried, and at the very least I’d be under heightened scrutiny. At worst, I’d be found guilty, and that would be a disaster. Sure, I wouldn’t tell them what I did with the treasure- I could even lie and say I sold it on the dark web and that I’d lost track of it- but I also didn’t want to spend time in prison.
So I had two big problems to deal with. One: how was I going to get in without being spotted on video? I knew they’d find the footage later, when they realized something had been stolen, but I could not afford to be caught in the act. Two: I had to get past the alarm system. That meant getting a card key to the door. Breaking in was not an option.
The obvious solution was to pay a visit to the security guards. Knock out whoever was in the video room, steal their key, enter the room, return the key somewhere, and leave undetected. The problem was how I would do it. I had no idea where security guards would be in the hallways. I had mapped out a route through maintenance tunnels and back rooms that would take me to the archives, but getting into the video room? I’d have to go through main hallways, and I was not about to carry a gun. As I said, murder was not an option. It would also add one more thing to the case that could be traced, and I did not want to leave the police more evidence.
You might think that nonlethal weapons would be an option. Those were bad, too, because I suspected cameras would pick up on what I was using. I might have been able to buy some through the dark web, and I might have hidden them well enough after the crime, but it was another way I might have been discovered.
I struck gold when I discovered that the night shift was rather sparse. The information had been buried within other logistical nonsense that meant nothing to me. The hacker I had hired did a damn good job. He had found the rough plans for security guards at night. It had been determined that two guards were to stay in the video room, two were to roam the halls, and one was to be on-call if needed, which probably meant he was sitting somewhere playing on his phone.
This new detail made my life a lot easier. All I had to do was disable the two guards in the video room. I would hear one person coming down the hall. I would be wearing special boots that reduced sound from walking. I could quietly walk in the other direction and avoid the guard. The odds were good that I wouldn’t even encounter the two, as long as I entered the video room undetected. I even realized that, once I was in the room, I could see exactly where they were and check their position against my own map, then avoid them easily.
I had eliminated most of the risk. There was an extremely small chance that my escape would link me specifically to the crime. I did not think I would get caught by one of two guards in the hallways. I could sneak into the security room and disable the guards with a couple quick blows to the head. I had purchased an electrified police baton. I’d bash the first guy over the head, and I could shock the second before he or she could react.
My plan was as foolproof as it would get. Now all I had to do was wait.
*
I chose a Friday night. Fridays are when people go out to bars and parties, to friend’s houses for dinner or late-night movies. There would be a lot of traffic on the road, but not so much that it would slow my escape. I would be masked by the dozens of other cars and also able to make a quick getaway, driving down back roads that I had studied and driving calmly past traffic lights. In all likelihood, no one would know the treasure had been stolen, and no one would see what I was wearing in the dark. Surely there would be almost no good Samaritans that called the police on someone in a ski mask. And if they did? The police would laugh. They can’t do anything unless they see an actual crime in progress. My mask would not be enough to get me detained.
I parked on the street, a block over from the museum. I entered through the back door that I knew would be unlocked. I picked the other door on the inside that was not hooked up to the alarm system. I had for the past week practiced picking all sorts of locks, and I had become very proficient.
I entered without a hitch. The hallways were dead. I would have heard someone coming from half a mile away, and no one did. As I had suspected, the place was so big that no one encountered me.
You might think that I forgot one key detail: what about the guards in the video room? Wouldn’t they see me and call the police before I got there? As it turned out, there was a hallway that had no cameras which led to a breakroom. That breakroom had a maintenance shaft which led to a hallway which did not open up to any cameras. From there, I could enter the video room undetected and knock out the guards.
The shaft was dark. I was glad I wasn’t claustrophobic. I felt like I was going through an underground bunker, the way the walls and ceilings closed in around me. I had brought two headlamps, but I didn’t need the backup. My first one worked just fine.
I proceeded as silently as I could, slowly opening the door into the hallway that lead to the video room. When I approached, I inched the door open, waiting for it to creak. It did not. The door was solid metal, on hinges that were as new as the rest of the archival wing, and the guards were talking anyways.
A man and woman sat at a table, their backs to me. I had worried that they might spot me entering and yell up a storm, so I had 3D-printed a gun model. In the heat of the moment, there was no way they’d identify it as a fake. They would not be stupid. They’d cooperate, and I would knock them out without causing a commotion.
Sneaking up on them did not prove as easy. The woman spotted me, and when she did I raised the gun and told her to shut the fuck up. She did. They both stayed where they were, and I whipped out my baton then. I went for the man first because he was built like a tank. He went down with a quick jab of electricity. The woman screamed and whipped out her gun. Fortunately, I was faster, and I took her down too.
I scanned the camera displays. Finding the other two guards took a while. I had to scroll through a bunch of feeds. When I did find them, I determined that they were far from the video room. They did not look alarmed. They had not heard the woman, nor had they discovered any other signs of a break-in.
I was on an adrenaline high, and I realized I might get too cocky. I took a few deep breaths to calm down. I removed the guards’ guns and hid them in a cabinet. When I was sure they were out cold, I mapped out my route again and headed toward the archives.
The key worked like a charm. No one spotted me, and I guess the guards didn’t wake up while I was gone. I probably took five minutes getting to the room the treasure was held in. It was under a piece of cloth on a table in the center of the room. Thankfully it was not behind glass. I had known that was a possibility, and I had planned for it: I knew there were certain tools you had to use to break the seals on glass cases, I had researched where they might be held in the building, and I had been fully prepared to try removing said case. The walls were thick concrete, and I doubted anyone would hear what I was doing. Besides, I’d have to take the risk, and odds were that whoever heard the sound would have come to investigate, in which case I’d have knocked them out with my baton, ambushing them at the doorway.
Everything went smoothly. I did not have to break open a case, and no other guards pursued me. I gave the camera outside a thumbs-up for good measure, left the card key outside the door, and made my way out of the building.
I shoved the chest in a leather sack I had brought and made my way to the car. I half-expected someone to encounter me on the street and exclaim that there was a robbery in progress. The mask and bag would have been a pretty dead giveaway. I also was counting on the incompetency of police and that, even though I looked like I was robbing something, they wouldn’t have any evidence and would take their time getting to the scene. By then I’d be long gone.
I checked the streets and, thankfully enough, no one was out walking. I had expected as much. The part of town I was in did not often have people on the sidewalks at night. There were no restaurants or stores nearby that might invite late-night customers. I was safe.
No one questioned me on my way back to the car. I loaded the trunk, jumped in, and drove away, half-expected police to be waiting for me at my house. None were. I unloaded the treasure as quickly as I could, swapped back the original license plate, and shoved my clothes in a trash bag. I would burn them tomorrow at a campground nearby. In the meantime, no one would know they were hidden in my coat closet.
It was nearly midnight, but I couldn’t delay. The guards might have already woken up, and there was no way to know how quickly the police might identify the white Civic that had driven away from the museum. I suspected they might never make the connection, but I couldn’t be sure. I drove the car back to my cousin’s house, arriving two hours later and parking it in the driveway. When I was sure I had wiped it down for fingerprints, I took my own car back and drove it home.
See, I had told my cousin I was going on a road trip, taking advantage of the vacation time I had racked up over the years. My own Volkswagen is old, and it’s not great on highways. It had not been hard to convince my cousin I needed to borrow his car. He was very understanding. His Civic is brand-new, and compared to my car it drives like a McLaren.
I didn’t fall asleep that night. I was too worried about getting an early-morning call or visit from the police. But the call never came. I had taken every precaution to not get caught, and I hadn’t. I was safe.
*
The story made the second page of the local paper. I had subscribed a couple weeks ago. I wanted to make sure that the police did not discover any leads, and, while I knew it might not be in the article, I also knew I could afford the $10 for the monthly subscription.
If the paper was to be believed, they had no clue who had taken the treasure. The guards remembered nothing about the man that had knocked him out, only that they could identify him as a six-foot white male and that he had electrocuted them. Good luck with that description. I was actually five-eleven, and there was not even mention of the Civic I had used to escape. All they had was the guards’ accounts and the video footage of the masked man with the treasure.
I couldn’t believe it. I had actually pulled off a museum robbery. I had planned for weeks, all the while worrying about when the next family member would die, and I had gotten out unscathed. The next day I had taken the treasure back to where it belonged and buried it deep. No one had noticed me then, mostly because no one was at that stretch of beach. I hid the box just in case by putting it in a lunch cooler.
Maybe the curse had stopped because the treasure knew of my intentions. I had started crafting my plan days after my girlfriend had died. I could not guess as to what forces controlled what had happened. It was entirely possible that they had seen what I was doing and stopped the killings.
For a couple days, I was riding high, ecstatic that I had managed to steal from the museum undetected. I hate to admit it, but I was proud. I had done a lot of work making sure I wouldn’t get caught, and I think I was pretty smart about it. No one ever learned about the Civic, either, which made my escape more miraculous.
There were so many ways it could have gone wrong. I could have encountered a guard, I could have failed to knock out the guards in the video room, I could have been spotted leaving. None of it happened. Maybe the treasure was protecting me, begging for me to remove it from the museum. Maybe it was just luck. Either way, those things did not detract from what I had done.
Eventually I stopped feeling good about what I had done, and the grief returned. No matter what I had or would do, the people that had died would remain dead. I wanted more than anything to blame myself. At the same time, I knew I was innocent, as innocent as my girlfriend had been when she had dug up the treasure with me, as innocent as the scientists and museum personnel that had gushed about the artifact.
I do feel bad for the scientists. They were devastated when the treasure was stolen. They implored the police to find it, to uncover the perpetrator of the crime and bring them to justice. The police had no leads. They only had an eyewitness account of a white male and some footage of a guy in black leaving the building. It would be impossible to narrow down the search, let alone come to any sort of conclusion.
They would get over it. I would rather them be disappointed than go through what I had. I didn’t even care about them, really. I cared about my family. I cared about my mom and grandparents, my cousins that were still alive, my aunt and uncle that had sent me birthday cards since I was five. I was worried about my friends, the ones from college and work that could have dropped dead at any moment. I was scared.
In hindsight, I cannot believe I bought into the whole evil treasure theory. I would have scoffed at such an idea a month ago. Now that more months have passed and that no one else I know has died, I believe I did the right thing. Still, it does not help. I battle with grief every day. I have experienced more death than most people do in a lifetime. I still go to therapy, and I have not had the nerve to go on any dates since my girlfriend was killed.
Think of my actions as you will. Call me crazy if you want. I don’t care what you think. I did what I had to do to protect those I loved. You would do the same, if you had even the inkling of an idea of a supernatural being or entity. It doesn’t seem so outlandish when people you know start dying every other day.
It is over now, and that is all that matters. I have absolved my family of the curse. If I have done things right, the treasure will never be rediscovered by humans. Perhaps we will destroy ourselves or even leave the planet before anyone comes close to finding it. Regardless, I will live the rest of my life knowing that I have potentially saved the human race, and that I have by negligence killed several innocents, one that meant the world to me and others that have left me permanently scarred. If I have not made it clear, if anyone finds that cooler with the treasure inside: leave it the fuck in the ground. Do not remove it, or you will undo all that I have done. My suffering will be your suffering, and many others will pay for your ignorance.

The intent of this script is to allow users to self-diagnose their installations.

Below I'm posting what crash handler keeps spitting out. Standard troubleshooting methods did not help, that's why I'm here.
Also, not even Safe Mode works.

2020.10.24 22:28 Euronotus Molave (21W - Western Pacific)

Latest news

Monday, 26 October 2:30 PM PhST (06:30 UTC)

Molave begins to strengthen as it emerges over the South China Sea

Satellite imagery analysis over the past several hours indicates that Typhoon Molave has continued to strengthen as it emerges over the South China Sea to the west of the island of Mindoro this afternoon. Molave continues to maintain a well-organized convective structure despite moving over land throughout the morning. Animated infrared imagery depicts large and tightly-wound spiral bands which wrap into a well-defined low-level center and water vapor imagery shows a robust and well-established radial outflow pattern.
Intensity estimates derived from satellite imagery analysis indicate that Molave maintained strength as it moves across the central Philippines. Maximum one-minute sustained winds held steady at 75 knots (140 kilometers per hour), though Molave is likely beginning to resume strengthening now that its low-level center is moving over water again. Molave is moving toward the west along the southern periphery of a subtropical ridge situated to the north.
Latest data JTWC Warning #9 11:00 AM PhST (03:00 UTC)
Current location: 13.3°N 120.1°E 72 mi (116 km) WSW of Batangas, Philippines
Forward motion: W (275°) at 17 knots (31 km/h)
Maximum winds: 75 knots (140 km/h)
Intensity (JMA): Typhoon
Intensity (SSHS): Hurricane (Category 1)
Minimum pressure: 977 millibars (28.85 inches)

Forecast discussion

Monday, 26 October 2:30 PM PhST (06:30 UTC)

Molave should approach major hurricane-equivalent strength on Tuesday

Molave is currently moving through a favorable atmospheric and oceanic environment characterized by a pocket of relatively weak northeasterly shear (10 to 15 knots), a very warm ocean surface (29 to 30°C) with high ocean heat content, abundant mid-level moisture, and strong upper-level divergence. Though shear is expected to increase as the cyclone continues westward over the next couple of days, the environment is expected to be favorable enough to support further intensification. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecast calls for a peak intensity of 95 knots (175 kilometers per hour) on early Tuesday morning as the cyclone reaches a midpoint between the Philippines and Vietnam.

Molave will be the sixth named cyclone to make landfall over Vietnam

As Molave makes its final approach to the coast of Vietnam on Wednesday, it will encounter a surge of easterly shear which is expected to exceed 30 knots. This will begin to weaken the cyclone, but not enough to prevent it from reaching the shore at typhoon strength. Molave is forecast to weaken to Category 1 hurricane-equivalent strength before making landfall during the mid-morning hours on Wednesday, with maximum one-minute sustained winds measuring around 80 knots (150 kilometers per hour).
Molave will become the fifth named cyclone to directly impact Vietnam (after Sinlaku, Noul, Linfa, Nangka, and Saudel), the third to make landfall within just the past month alone, and the first cyclone to make landfall at typhoon strength. Molave is expected to greatly exacerbate an ongoing natural disaster, with heavy rainfall contributing to deadly flooding across the central portion of the country.

2020.10.24 05:43 pentuppinup “You have no reason”

Does anyone else have problems when screening for housing or shelters? My job is directly connected to MULTIPLE women’s shelters but the stipulations are like this: must be HIV positive, must be an addict with documented 3 months of recovery, senior, a person that is trans, etc
One shelter said “sorry to put it this way, but you have no reason to be in your position and probably had it easier than others before you got to this point”.
That hurt. A lot. I’m going through a divorce. My husband has been violent toward me while pregnant because I caught him cheating and he did the whole suicide threat theatrics, I had a stillborn due to nonstop stress because of his mental issues during the ENTIRE pregnancy, Covid paused him being able to go to therapy and get medication, he was on the brink of a schizophrenia diagnosis and has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder when his doctor first assumed he just had depression and anxiety. He has substance abuse issues and intense self harm issues. He even recently sent me a photo of his self harm scars on his arm........ conveniently posed and angled right at his slight erection in his boxers as some sick bait to me I assume. A mix of trying to refuel sexual flames AND cranking up the pity me card at the same time.
The one consistent job I had fired me because his sketchy lawyer got cases put on the docket with TWO DAYS notice and my job got fed up and fired me. This wasn’t the first time I’ve been terminated due to something related to my husband, and would not be the last. He works 3rd shift and goes into work drunk or high, stocking produce at a grocery store with bleeding, open self harm wounds and no one says shit to him. My job fires me because I can’t control when I had to answer to web meeting court dates. I would always arrive to work 1 hour early. I wasn’t a problem employee. I’ve gotten the “im terminating you because you have a lot going on” speech from two salons now in 2020. They both know I’m homeless. Luckily the bar I work at connected to those shelters has been WAY more empathetic.
I left the condo he walked out of that was in his mom’s name in July. All spring his mom would nicely suggest turning the AC on. I told her no, I’m not going to just yet, I don’t have the money, etc. She said she “wasn’t asking” me to pay for it. Come July, my husband and her kept the air between 90-95 degrees. She texted me saying “not my problem” when I asked why I can’t turn the cool air on after months of encouraging me to turn it on. She added “my plant tree isn’t there anymore so why should I turn the air on for you?”. I guess they were fine paying a HEAT bill in the middle of July for spite. I bought 5 box fans. I’ve never seen my cat pant like a dog but she started to while she hid in the bath tub where it leaked water nonstop. That was her safe place. I had to leave. My lawyer wants to sue for cruelty, among other things, but wants thousands of dollars more before he begins work on it, even though he could demand my husband pay my lawyer fees and get paid that way. He knows I’ve been living out of my car, too.
I guess they are right. I’m very happy all people listed above have safe places to live. I’m glad times have changed in some ways where they aren’t dying en masse on the streets. But can I just say being told that still hurt? Am I allowed? Some nights I am terrified.
Do I truly just need to ~be grateful it isn’t worse~ to get out of this? Yes I’m glad I’m not diagnosed with a permanent disease. I am SO glad addiction somehow is NOT a mental illness I have. I’m glad people who are trans and seniors DO have safe housing when needed. Yes I’m glad I do have a car but the cost of it + insurance is ruining my life and I’m sure it will soon slip away from me as well even though I work 2 jobs almost every day.
The most fucked up thing is my husband ALWAYS brags about how he was homeless from age 8 to his early 20s. I sometimes look at this text conversation to tell myself how bad I fucked up believing someone like my husband. I punish myself for falling for him because SO MUCH BAD has happened since I fell in love with him. He constantly told me tales of how he was homeless but has zero problems knowing his wife that loved him more than I loved myself is living out of the car, while men knock on my window while I’m trying to sleep offering drugs and trying to reach into my window. Obviously the ones knocking on my window at 4am do not have pure intentions and every time they have said something sexual. I’m terrified if I don’t find a secure place to live that eventually it’s going to be violent. I’m already paranoid of complaints and police that I always wake up when a car drives by me. I’ve debated wasting money on things like getting my nails done, so I can just look more polished so I can say I was “resting my eyes”/it wouldn’t be safe for me to drive any further, and it be more believable incase a complaint is made about someone sleeping in their car in a parking lot. Maybe I’m over thinking it because it’s just been the creeps bothering me so far.
I will “spoil” myself with hotel nights but just like my car, it’s a money pit even though it’s sometimes necessary because I just need a BED or a non-exposed gym shower. Or I don’t need to waste gas by keeping the car on because it’s raining and 40 degrees all night. Where I live, the hotel/air bnb industry is NOT suffering. They are not cheap. I can only do hotels a few days out of desperation.
I just hope me being excluded from shelters means someone who is indeed in a worse position than I am, gets in. I would be completely okay with my little car routine & gym-shower routine knowing someone with absolutely ZERO shelter and no income and even children got a bed that I may have taken from them.
At the same time.... I hate how all of us have to go through a show of poverty Olympics to “prove” which one of us deserve a roof, bathroom, and bed.
My credit score is bad because of student loans and me refusing to get a credit card, as well as late car payments lately. This imaginary score is the sole reason why I am homeless. 4 college degrees, refusal and restraint about credit cards but because it’s bad, that is “proof” that I’m bad with finances. All the while my friends that racked up credit card debt, waited 7 years and never paid them off, and then applied to BUY a house are doing just fine.
What even is this world we are living in.
I hope everyone reading this gets their living space soon. Job, no job, addiction, no addiction, children, no children, etc etc etc. everyone deserves a place to live, bathe, sleep, and just feel safe. Thanks for reading.

2020.10.24 05:43 wdpk FAQ

“All truth passes through three phases. First it is ridiculed. Secondly, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.” - Arthur Schopenhauer
Note that this FAQ is a work-in-progress
What is gangstalking?
Also known as organized stalking (the preferred term), cause stalking, or a myriad of other terms, it is a phenomenon in which a targeted individual (or ‘TI’) is subjected to harassment by a group of perpetrators (often called ‘perps’). It is not, as the term ‘gangstalking’ implies, street gangs doing the stalking, but mostly stems from three-letter agencies/governments targeting people for a variety of reasons. It can take several forms.
For many, it involves more analog experiences, such as: - a feeling of being followed in public - odd occurrences in one’s daily life (personal belongings being rearranged in one’s house, for example, or threatening phone calls)
others complain of technologies being used against them:
symptoms are often: - paranoia (sometimes based in reality and sometimes not) - hearing voices - tinnitus/ringing in ears - muscle twitching/involuntary muscle movements; forced speech - sleep deprivation - depression and anxiety - sharp, localized pain, often said to be ‘burning’ - increased heart rate - itching
Organized stalking can include any and all of the above, but for the purposes of clarity, should generally be separated into the non-government-related forms and the more extensive, government-related forms. This subreddit will focus on the latter.
When posting, please use tags that are relevant to your experience.
Who is using these technologies?
It’s thought that the majority of this comes from those with a connection to three-letter agencies and military intelligence. [John Hall video] Access of the technology seems to be extended often to former employees who may run private investigative firms, do contracting, etc. The military and intelligence agencies have a revolving door with regard to private industry — many of those who are employed officially by the government go on to use their clearance, connections, and information when they go into consulting, private security firms, etc.
Many assume that the government must be targeting them directly, and while this can be the case, especially for purposes of experimentation and for political dissidents or other similar persons of interest, it’s said that much of the abuse also comes from those with access who are using it for personal grievances, love interests, etc.
DoD, CIA, and particularly NSA are said to be the most involved with these technologies.
How is this being done?
With muscle control and remote neural monitoring (one’s thoughts being read), one of the main methods is said to be EEG-heterodyning, based on a patent by Dr. Robert G. Malech [1], [2]. In plain language, an EEG is a method of recording brain-wave activity. It is commonly used for sleep studies and for epilepsy. EEG-heterodyning is recording what happens to the brain when two frequencies are fired at it — the brain will send back an interference frequency when it receives these two frequencies, and it is this interference frequency which is read. This reading is a snapshot of what the brain’s activity looks like at that moment, and so when many of these are taken in succession, allows for one’s thoughts to be read. This method can further be used: when the target performs an action during this process, that specific action will create a unique brain wave pattern for that specific action. If one were to blink during the process, for example, one’s unique brain-wave pattern for commanding the body ’blink’ would be sent out and read. This specific, unique wave signature for ‘blink’ can then be sent back to the target to then force them to blink. This method also allows for the information from one’s optic nerve (which connects to the brain) to be read.
Because each person’s brain waves are unique, an attack can be directed at one person in a room without ever affecting anyone else in that same room.
As unbelievable as this sounds, it is very real and not the stuff of science-fiction. One should remember Arthur C. Clarke’s law of robotics that “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” The advanced state of these technologies are often met with disbelief, even by those undergoing their effects.
The other primary method is said to be the altering of resonance frequencies. All living things (and non-living things) have a frequency that they operate or exist at; frequency weapons dial in to these various specific resonant frequencies and, when fired, can stimulate the person or object. For example, by dialing in to the frequency of a wall in one’s house and firing at it, one could produce an audible tap or ‘click’ in the wall. Dialing into the frequency of the heart, one could stimulate it to beat at the desired rate, etc. DNA resonance is specifically said to be used, as it is a unique identifier of an individual (and again, allows for a single person in a room to be targeted while others can be completely unaware).
The attacks are thought to originate primarily in satellites [John Hall, A New Breed] and cell towers [R. Lighthouse]. Satellite surveillance, despite seeming more elaborate, is actually said to be a more cost-effective method of surveillance. It also allows a person to be targeted anywhere on the globe, rather than cell towers which are more localized. The idea of an EEG being read from space sounds bizarre on its face, but for these reasons it can be a more effective tool than the traditional (but often outdated) concepts of surveillance (staking out a car on the street, etc.)
Targets often mistakenly assume that nanotechnology, implants, or electrodes are being used. These technologies do indeed exist, but are much more likely to show up in medical imaging (MRI’s, CAT scans, etc.) and are more likely to leave a trace of having been used, and so their use is said to be much more rare. https://youtu.be/I8Sd8Yf2b2s (~22:20) The overarching principle with cyber torture is that it is ‘no-touch’ torture, leaving no evidence. This principle dates back to at least the work of the CIA’s Dan Mitrione.
Similarly, and for the same reason, hidden cameras are also less likely to be used, as EEG-reading allows for information from the optic nerve to be transmitted and read without the need for a physical hidden camera.
The effect of hearing voices can be trivially achieved through the microwave auditory effect, which relies on the same principle as purchaseable bone-conduction headphones, only done so wirelessly.
Sharp pains and burns are often the result of microwave/directed-energy weapons/millimeter-wave weapons.
Ultrasound weapons are also said to be used, and can make the target feel severe compression of their chest, as well as restrict the urethra, bladder, and sphincters of the body, and presumably constrain blood vessels.
In terms of logistics, perps will work in shifts, often around-the-clock.
Who is targeted?/“Why am I being targeted”?
Dr. John Hall mentions that approximately 70% of those affected are women, 30% men.
As of 2008, he estimated that 300,000 people are affected, in most major countries around the world (several countries have access to this technology). He has stated that this figure may have increased since then.
As for the types of targets chosen, he has pointed to the types of victims of related phenomena like MKUltra: those at the fringes of society like johns visiting prostitutes (Operation Midnight Climax), current or former drug addicts, and others who can be dismissed as schizophrenics or who do not have the resources to seek legal help.
This is not to say that there aren’t genuine schizophrenics or those who suffer from delusions or seek attention. (see below)
Whistleblower Bryan Kofron has claimed that targets are often individuals of above-average intelligence (presumably to fine-tune EEG responses), twins, the homeless, and individuals with peculiarities in their DNA — fast rates of healing, etc.
The experimentation phases of the technology are said to have been mostly completed, with those continuing to undergo this likely being the subjects of long-term study of the effect of the technologies.
Political dissidents and other figures in politics are also often targeted. Manuel Noriega, for example, is said to have complained of directed-energy attacks. [source] There are even reports from former MKUltra victims that they are currently being targeted under these new technologies.
Again, note that this is distinct from non-governmental forms of organized stalking, which can similarly be the result of angering someone powerful in a community, in retaliation for whistleblowing against a company or a corporation, spurned love interest/divorce, etc.
”What makes you so important that you would be targeted?”
See above. The subjects of MKUltra were also ‘nobodies’, or were people at the fringes of society who could be more easily discredited. With lower-grade forms of stalking, in particular, it can be as simple as a petty personal grievance.
”TI’s are schizophrenics/delusional/attention-seeking”
Schizophrenics are usually people who have always been ‘off’. Most targeted individuals are able to identify a specific time in adulthood that their targeting started, and most state that it began in their 30s-40s. TI’s have undergone brain imaging to show that their brain function is normal and not as would be expected with schizophrenia. Schizophrenics also respond to medication, whereas TI’s do not. https://youtu.be/I8Sd8Yf2b2s (~16:00)
The consequences of openly claiming that one is experiencing organized stalking are significant — many face skepticism, public ridicule and ostracization, strained relationships, loss of reputation, loss of employment/income, and some become homeless. There are indeed delusional people or people looking for attention who claim to be TI’s, but these are few in number. One should exercise judgment (as well as empathy) with the claims of each TI. Attempts to insult anyone on their claims will result in a ban. Keep in mind also that there may be trolls/astroturfing/sock-puppeting.
One of the difficulties that TI’s face is also that the effects of this technology (at times misplaced paranoia, etc.) can mimic genuine, a priori symptoms of schizophrenia and delusional disorders.
How long have these programs existed?
These seem to be a continuation of COINTELPRO and MKUltra-style programs. After the Church Committee and the Rockefeller Commission, agencies like the CIA were given a slap on the wrist and trusted to restrain themselves.
It’s important to understand that the projects of DARPA and related agencies are often working on projects decades before they become public-facing (the Internet that you’re reading this on being one example).
Dr. Jose Delgado’s experiments in the 1960s proved first that that the brain could be controlled via electrodes, and later that it could be controlled remotely without them.
The microwave auditory effect (voice-to-skull) was first discovered in 1961 and would have been weaponized thereafter.
DEW’s had an arms race in the 60’s? 70’s [El Espectador article]
Former British Royal Navy and MI5 scientist Barrie Trower has stated that microwave technology has been weaponized since the 1960s
Some of the earliest TI’s were Eleanor White and Harlan Girard, whose claims of these technologies date back to the ‘60s [source]. It should also be noted that many of the [claims of TI’s ](youtubebioethics) date back to the ‘90s [or earlier](wikileaksreport) which, together with the number of people affected, means that either this is a mass delusion which somehow spread worldwide before the advent of consumer Internet, or that there is some basis in reality.
[Nanotechnology is said to have come about in the 1980s]
How can so many people be involved?
As mentioned above, much of the abuse of these technologies comes from those with improper access to them. Dana Priest discusses the enormous amount of people with security clearances in the book [Top Secret America](link).
The scope may be unbelievable, but the first reports of concentration camps during the Holocaust were also said to be met with disbelief, and much of the technology itself is met with disbelief.
What can I do about this?
Do not isolate yourself. There are many support and advocacy groups for targeted individuals, including:
PACTS, International (has conference calls open to TI’s several times throughout the week)
Ella Free also hosts conference calls throughout the week.
most importantly, educate yourself.
If you plan on trying to explain it to someone or to convince them, be conscious of how you do it — don’t appeal to more fringe conspiracies like lizard people/reptilians, etc. Better yet, don’t bring other conspiracies into it at all unless they are directly related to gangstalking — things like tying 9/11 to your claims will only make it easier for you to be dismissed as a conspiracy theorist. It is understandably difficult under the circumstances, but try to perceive how you are coming across. Do not lash out at neighbors or those who you perceive to be doing the stalking as it will only make you seem crazy, which is the desired effect. PACTS and Dr. John Hall advise TI’s specifically to not seek psychiatric help, as this can set one up to be institutionalized and the targeting can continue unabated. Similarly, be wary of contacting the police. Take these recommendations under your own consideration and use your judgment as you see fit, however.
Please also note that grainy footage of a red car can’t be considered ‘proof’ of your being stalked. It may help with documenting for your own purposes along with other circumstantial evidence, however, and we do encourage those who may be experiencing this to document as extensively as possible. It is strongly recommended to archive as much of this as possible offline as well as online, as pages can be taken offline and are then inaccessible. In addition, one can direct archive.org’s Wayback Machine in some cases to store a copy of a webpage. This is doubly important recently, as QAnon videos have been banned from YouTube, and it is very possible that something like this could happen to videos that are relevant to organized stalking/targeted individuals.
Trust people until you have a reason not to. It is in the interest of perps to divide and create friction within the TI community.
shielding guide; keep in mind that extremely low-frequencies can penetrate through the earth and that these steps seem to be aimed more at minimization
Dr. Hall recommends the use of binaural beats#Binaural_beats) to re-entrain the brain’s frequencies. There are a number of free binaural beats apps for smartphones. The use of vitamins/supplements is also recommended, to address the damage to the body resulting from free radicals released with these weapons.
use techniques of counter-surveillance or — a tent in a room if you are concerned about cameras (although it is thought to not be necessary due to EEG reading of the optic nerve), turning on the shower to create white noise if you are trying to have a sensitive conversation (although this is thought to not be 100% effective any more), using a pen and paper or meeting with someone in-person rather than communicating online, white noise apps themselves, using a small rock in one’s shoe against gait analysis, covering one’s face for facial analysis, etc.
periodically reminding others that you have no intention to commit suicide can also be helpful, and/or something like the concept of a [canary warrant](link) to let others know this.
WireShark, a free and open-source network analyzer, in particular, can assist in documenting unauthorized network activity.
learn op-sec (operational security) with your devices:
Prism-Break
PrivacyTools
Tails
Tor Browser
Privacy is a good thing, but making oneself known publicly (or at least known to other TI’s) does offer some level of protection against targeting, and is better than simply being isolated and made to suffer alone. Ideally, TI’s would do well to join an in-person meetup group.
Freedom of Information Act/MuckRock; if one has the resources, many lawyers work with FOIA; if anyone knows one that would volunteer to help pro bono to the community, feel free to send a mod mail message. Privacy Act requests in particular are what TI’s should be using, as these are how one obtains information about oneself:
As of the time of this writing (September 2020), the UN has begun gathering testimonies of targeted individuals and appears to be in communication with some TI advocacy groups.
There appear to be class-action lawsuits in the works by these organizations, as well.
None of these fundamentally address, the issue, however, and it is thought that a socio-political change is necessary.

There are independent journalists from reputable international media in Nagorno Karabakh.

. . . . . . . . 2020.10.23 10:33 Logiman43 How PIS destroyed Poland.

EDIT: This post is in an article format with pictures and graphs here
I can't be silent anymore. In 2018, out of 1076 abortions in Poland, 1 was because of rape, 25 because it was dangerous for the woman's life and 1050 because of an unhealthy fetus. It means that PIS just totally banned abortion in Poland
Too few Europeans are aware of the depth of this crisis. The current Polish government is destroying the country from inside-out with its nepotism, religious zeal, communistic tactics, social programs and funding verge organizations (or trolls). It breaks every single law, making unconstitutional laws since 2015 and destroying the court of law. How Poland is pushing EU into crisis - rise of populism. The video is 2 years old and now it's worst
PIS staffed every single judicial court with its own people (ending the impartiality of judges). The very aggressive social 500+ program increased the job inactivity of Poles to 48% (48% of 15+ Polish citizens are NEET. Unemployment is at 5-6%). The Job vacancies in Poland are at the lowest level in EU. The corruption and nepotism is rampant, more than 1000 family members and friends are in public companies or in different Ministries. Polish PIS high ranking politicians are also making money together with pimps and mafia (see scandals down there). They are also giving millions of euros from public money to the Catholic Church. They are paying trolls to spew hate on Facebook, via Whatsapp and on the web. Some of them are hiding and not prosecuting pedophiles in the Catholic Church. Poland has almost the lowest innovation in EU. In 15 indexes tracking freedom and democracy in Europe Poland went from an average position of 12 out of 28 in 2010 to 23 out of 28 in 2019. I mean, not to diminish Trump’s “awesomeness” but imagine if the WHOLE republican party in the US was Trump-like. Shady deals, family in the govt, creating discord, staffing courts with their own judges. I’m just mortified.

Wikipedia about this blunder

Destruction of the rule of law.

Some of the passages below are taken from this pdf
No member state in the history of the EU has ever gone as far in subjugating its courts to executive control as the current Polish government. The Polish case has become a test whether it is possible to create a Soviet-style justice system in an EU member state; a system where the control of courts, prosecutors and judges lies with the executive and a single party.
Across Europe, national courts recognise the judgements of courts in other member states, whether these involve commercial law, the European arrest warrant or child custody. Judges must assume that courts across the EU operate according to common values and principles set out in the European Union Treaty and in its Charter of Fundamental Rights. Once judges across the EU have reason to doubt whether courts in any member state provide effective judicial protection, the legal order on which the EU rests collapses.
Freedom house - How PIS captured Poland’s Courts

Constitutional Tribunal changes

It all began with the constitutional crisis four years ago. Constitutional crisis and the destruction of the rule of law In 2015, parliament changed the law on the Constitutional Tribunal, which rules on the constitutionality of legislation. The changes allowed them to annul the nominations of three judges made by the previous parliament and appoint their own. It shortened the terms of the tribunal's president and vice-president from nine to three years. The tribunal ruled the move unconstitutional in an open rebellion, but the dispute remains unresolved. Julia Przylebska - was illegally named the president of the Tribunal court by the president. And now Kaczynski, the PM have meetings at her house. Nice separation of power
There's too much to describe. For further info please visit the link. It is an amazing summary of the whole ordeal. timeline

Supreme Court changes

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, said one of the most controversial reforms was to do with the Supreme court, which, among other duties, is responsible for confirming election results. The idea was to lower the age of retirement for Supreme Court justices from 70 to 65, but allow the Polish president to grant a five-year extension to whomever they deemed worthy. In 2019, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) — the EU's highest court —ruled this was illegal, after an interim decision ordered 20 already-sacked judges be reinstated. Of course, PIS chose 2 new Constitutional judges, A politician Pawlowicz with communistic past and Piotrowicz, also a politician and a prosecutor that was an active communist during the 80 that prosecuted Solidarnosc. Both of them are above 65 years old.

Ordinary court judges

There were also moves to try a similar tactic in the general court system for judges and public prosecutors, lowering the age of retirement for women to 60 and for men to 65, down from the current 67. Under the reforms the justice minister, who is appointed by the ruling party, would have the power to extend a judge's term. The laws were somewhat adjusted after pressure from the European Commission, but in November 2019 the ECJ shot down these laws, too, citing gender discrimination and political influence over the judiciary.

Disciplinary measures for judges

Another PiS addition allowed judges to be investigated and sanctioned for their court rulings. The disciplinary hearings and procedures were to be carried out by judges selected via parliament. These reforms were criticized by the European Commission because "judges are not insulated from political control and thus judicial independence is violated." The commission brought legal action against Poland on this matter in October 2019.

National Council of the judiciary takeover

In 2017 PiS remodeled the National Council of the Judiciary, which selects candidates for appointment as judges by the President of the Republic. This allowed it, in the short term, to control appointments to the Supreme Court – including to a newly created Disciplinary Chamber, which hears disciplinary cases against judges, and to a new Extraordinary Appeals Chamber, which adjudicates on electoral issues. Over time PiS’ take-over of the National Judicial Council allows it to reshape the entirety of the judiciary. Fifteen of the 25 members of the National Council of the Judiciary were previously elected by judges themselves, as is common practice across Europe for such bodies. These fifteen judges are now elected by the majority in the Sejm, the lower chamber of the Polish parliament. The other ten members of the National Council of the Judiciary are: four members from the Sejm itself (all four members of PiS), two members from the Senate, one representative of the President of the Republic, the Minister of Justice, the president of the Supreme Court and the president of the Supreme Administrative Court. In total 23 of the 25 positions are directly appointed by political authorities.
After the election of the new KRS, a publication of the list with the names of judges declaring their support for specific candidates was refused. The Supreme Administrative Court ruled that those names must be disclosed. However, the Chancellery of the Sejm has yet to carry out the NSA’s ruling. The Constitutional Tribunal (TK) and the President of the Personal Data Protection Office have been roped into guarding the secret. KRS destruction

Muzzle bill

The muzzle bill passed Dec 2019, victimize judges questioning the legitimacy of the government’s legal appointments, saying it is unlawful to “show hostility to other authorities of the Republic of Poland and its constitutional organs or to critisize the basic principles of the Republic of Poland.”The bill also delegalise the preliminary questions to the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU). The bill also allows to fire judges ( which is unconstitutional according to the Constitution). In average Ziobro dismissed a judge every day and a half from its position of president of court source

In the latest special Covid19 law (already 4th lol) PIS smuggled an article straight from a communistic playbook about prosecuting people that critique the president. Political scandals

Illegal presidential pardon

Illegal presidential pardon for CBA chief Kaminski In 2013, Law and Justice (PiS) MP Mariusz Kamiński – who served as head of the anti-corruption agency from 2006 and 2009 – was found guilty of overstepping his powers. He was sentenced to three years in prison and was banned from holding public office for ten years. Polish President Andrzej Duda pardoned Kamiński even though he was still appealing his sentence at the time. The case against Kamiński was then discontinued. A supreme court judge said that the president interfered in the legal process because Kamiński was proven neither innocent nor guilty when he was pardoned, making a future ruling redundant. The judge said that the president can pardon someone after any final appeal has been heard “because then he is not interfering with the judiciary”.

Merging the General Prosecutor with the political Minister of Justice

The general prosecutor role was merged with the minister of justice Ziobro. source. This handed Ziobro and his subordinates greatly expanded power to politically interfere with rank-and-file prosecutors, their decisions, and their freedoms of speech and association. Poland Is Purging Its Prosecutors
200+ public prosecutors that are loyal to the Minister of Justice Ziobro (from PIS) All of them got promotions (or someone from their family) or pay raises. another list

Destroying the military

The creation of a territorial defense unit- a civilian army led by the ministry of defense to control “the situation inside Poland”. In addition, there was a purge of generals. and killing multibillion deals with France. About 37 generals and 47 colonels left. Why? Because they had to answer to a 27-year old assistant to the Defense Minister, former pharmacy assistant without a university degree. The Rzeczpospolita daily newspaper reported that Misiewicz was given a top communications job with PGZ ( largest defense consortiums in Central Europe) that pays $12,500 a month, huge sum in a country where the average pre-tax wage is about $1,150 a month. source

In 2015, the Defence minister Macierewicz raided the Nato center in Warsaw at 1am to take control of documents and place their man at the helm

The ministry of Justice is funding trolls to destroy judges

Ziobro-Piebiak paid Troll scandal The Onet news portal published a report alleging that Deputy Justice Minister Łukasz Piebiak “arranged and controlled” an online campaign against Judge Krystian Markiewicz, the head of Iustitia, a judicial organization critical of the government’s efforts to restructure the judicial system, as well as against other inconvenient judges. According to the Onet report, Piebiak operated and financed an online campaign by a woman called Emilia who allegedly sent over 2,000 letters and emails about Markiewicz to other judges as well as to pro-government right-wing media. The messages contained fabricated, semi-confirmed and gossipy details of the judge’s personal life. According to Onet, Emilia obtained Markiewicz’s personal address from Piebiak so she could send him one of the letters.

Taking over the state media

State media was taken over by PIS and is using mass propaganda and here Not only they are a propaganda tube but they also offend polish citizens ie – translation: defenders of pedophiles and alimonies-takers are the ones against judiciary reforms. They call every peaceful protest as a coup
The same can be said about the GUS – general statistical bureau. It is controlled by PIS and it is known to “change” metrics so every Inflation or unemployment metrics can’t be trusted.

LBGT-free zones and Xenophobia.

Fear against refugees and calls for xenophobia. A leaked draft of a new Polish migration policy discriminates against Muslims, ranks foreigners according to ethnicity and breaches human rights
My article Why the Polish government is against LGBT?
PIS is supporting LGBT free zones where a thrid of Poland is declared as LGBT-free. During the presidential elections in 2020 Gay “ideology” is worse than communism, says Duda - PIS president.

Destroying education and HealthCare.

PIS cancels the in vitro program Polish government program that covered most of the in vitro costs was immediately cut by the Law and Justice Party when it came to power in late 2015, even though Poland has one of the lowest birth rates in the EU. Catholic Church opposition to IVF is widely seen as one factor in the Polish government's decision.
PIS also increased the minimum wage at the beginning of 2020. It created a weird paradox where a teacher and a starting MD is earning less than the minimal wage because they get paid from public money and the minimal wage change is for the private sector. And PIS wants to ban sex ed by labeling teachers as gay activists and pedophiles. Critics say Poland’s governing Law and Justice Party is wrecking the education system for political gain — and students are suffering.

Environment?

Destruction of the oldest European forest in Poland by Minister of Environment Szyszko The Bialowieza Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage site that sprawls across the border between Poland and Belarus, occupying almost 580 square miles of woodland and providing home to rare European wood bison among others. At least 10,000 trees are thought to have been felled in Białowieża, since the Polish environment minister, Jan Szyzko tripled logging limits there in 2016. The EU’s highest court has ruled that Poland’s logging in the Unesco-protected Białowieża forest is illegal, potentially opening the door to multi-million euro fines.
“Our (water) resources are comparable to those of Egypt,” it said in the report bearing the ominous title: “Poland, European Desert”

Nepotism and colleagues in state-owned companies

PIS won the elections by wanting to fight nepotism. The most famous was “24yo Misiewicz, a former pharmacy assistant without a university degree was in the defense industry under Macierewicz. The apparent favoritism has raised ethics concerns in a party that won office promising to fight corruption.” source There is even a webpage listing more than 1000 cases of nepotism under PIS Pisiewicze
Latest data show 162M PLN to 84 PIS oligarchs and Colleagues

Illegal budget for 2017

The 2017 budget "was adopted" not in the Sejm assembly hall, but in a smaller room where the so-called parliamentary session was held immediately as a follow-up to the meeting of the parliamentary causus of PIS, where no reliable counting of vates was possible, and with many allegations taht the opposition MPs were not allowed in. [Constitutional Democracy in Crisis?, Oxfoord, 2018, p.268]

Ex-communists in PIS ranks. And PIS is very anti-left and anti-PRL.

They are accusing the opposition – PO - to consist mostly of ex-communists or communistic party members or collaborators. The issue is that most members of PO fought against the communism and spent months/years in prison in the ’80. On the other hand, the PIS party members scarcely fought for polish liberty and some of its party members are former communistic party members or communistic prosecutors like Piotrowicz! Some Polish TC judge are also ex-PRL members. Here is a list in polish of all current PIS party members who served as PRL members during the communistic era. So, PIS is fighting against itself. Another list with 20 names of ex-party members now in PIS

Funding the Catholic church with public money

PIS is very Pro-Catholic, most of their voters are devout Catholics. So it is no surprise that PIS is funding religious orgs from public money. Since Law and Justice came to power in 2015, Father Rydzyk’s businesses have received at least $55 million in subsidies from at least 10 ministries and state companies. His Radio Maryja station, which reaches millions and is often the sole source of information for many older voters in rural Poland, offers a daily diet of horror stories about a world without faith, where gay people control the political agenda, universities are corrupted by “neo-Marxists,” and the Roman Catholic Church is under mortal threat. Rydzyk Embroiled in Corruption Allegations
Hiding Pedophilia. Map of 259 victims of catholic pedophilia. When a documentary was released before recent local elections revealing devastating examples of how priests sexually abused children and how church officials covered it up, many in PIS saw it not as evidence of an institution that lost its way, but one that needed to be defended. Piotrowicz, the above communist prosecutor, dismissed in 2001 a case against a priest accused of raping six girls.
Polish PIS president Duda pardons a paedophile that raped his own daughter. He makes the pardon a week before elections

Smolensk commission

The so-called assassination of Kaczynski's twin president brother in Smolensk created 90M PLN of costs. PIS created a "cult" around his death and even created a special commission that would prove it was an assassination. Kaczynski was using it on every occasion Don't wipe your treacherous mugs with .... Ofc they didn’t prove anything and they buried the topic. Every 10th of every month for 3 years, PIS party leader Kaczynski was making a "show" commemorating his dead twin brother. He was using the police to secure his demonstration even if he has no lawful power (he is neither a president, neither the prime minister). New law expanding police surveillance and the police is getting raises after raises to keep them happy. The commemorations, the commission and the damages (paid only to the politicians’ families, not to the crew) amounted to 91M PLN.

The welfare revolution

PIS is also very pro-family. The party is giving away 500zl per month for every kid. In short, it has “bought” the elections. The polish economy is unable to sustain such an endeavor roots of populism. And it costs the economy 80B PLN between 2016 and 2019. The best part? Rate of births is negative for the last couple of years and inflation is still growing. According to the PIS Stats bureau it is 3.5% and growing. However, many journalists made their own baskets of normal good and services and the inflation is closer to 10%. Additionally there is a growing debt that PIS tries to hide by shifting some debt into other Funds. One of them is the “Solidarity fund” that is not counted in the overall polish GDP, that is to support people with disabilities will pay for the 13th and 14th pension of people 65+.

Funding propaganda and trolls

Computational Propaganda in Poland: Russian troll factories
PIS bought the Pegasus spyware to spy on its citizens In September 2018, private broadcaster TVN24 reported that Poland’s state audit body, NIK, was questioning an outlay of over 33 million zloty (€7.6 million euro) by the Justice Fund, a government fund to help victims of crime. According to TVN, the money went toward the purchase of a “new system to spy on telephones and computers, the most expensive system in the history of Polish secret services.” Reports that the covertly purchased system could be Pegasus — a top-performing spyware that is impossible to track — surfaced last week.
Polish troll farms promoting Duda and Kaczynski

Funding public TV stations

Polish public TV stations should be impartial and public. Not favoring any party nor government and give the same screen time to every party equally. Unfortunately, there was a purge of journalists the moment PIS won the election and the propaganda is stalin-like. Look at this graph how it changed. Polish TVP is the mouthpiece of the govt. In 2020 PIS voted to give an additional 2B pln per year for 5 years to public tv.
Public Main TV making fun of US ambassador by reading the tweet with a derogatory accent

Scandals

PIS has hundreds of scandals that each would destroy a modern government. They defrauded billions of PLN over the years, put 1000’s of family members in different state-owned companies. Below are listed the main sexual and financial scandals.
  1. Sex hotel of the head of the Audit office Marian Banaś , a Law and Justice (PiS) politician and recently appointed chief of Poland’s Supreme Audit Office has been heavily embroiled in a corruption scandal, another to hit the ruling party just weeks before the country votes in a parliamentary election. Mr Banaś served as finance minister from June to August this year, and is a key figure in the party. Mr Banaś concealed his possession of a tenement house in Krakow from his financial disclosures. This property was then revealed to have deep running connections with a local, criminally-run escort agency. He claimed that the house was given to him by an old friend whom he met in the Home Army, which he then renovated. In his disclosures, he claimed he would sell the house, which never happened. Banaś claims that this was due to the buyer’s inability to get a loan. Investigations have further revealed that Mr Banaś agreed to rent the property for 5000 zloty a month, 10,000 zloty lower than its estimated market value, according to Gazeta Wyborcza. Just as the scandal could not apparently get any worse for Mr Banaś, further investigation by journalist Bertold Kittel revealed criminal links. When Mr Kittel entered the property he found at the reception an infamous Krakow criminal known as one of the brothers K – Wiesław or Janusz, who control escort agencies in the region. While still under investigation, there have been suggestions of contact between the two.
  2. "Alleged" Pedophila and Sex trafficking scandal of House speaker Wirtualna Polska learned the contents of the message of CBA officer Wojciech J. to the prosecutor's office about the failure of the head of the CBA, Ernest Bejda. In the background is a lost record with a recording of one of the leading PiS politicians who should have sex with a minor Ukrainian girl lost. His name falls on the document. In the message, Wojciech J. refers to several reports that he was the head of the office in connection with the "unauthorized access to his armored cabinet during his absence" submitted. From this vault, a record should be lost in escort agencies from the Podkarpacie region. One of the leading PiS politicians should have sex with a young Ukrainian in the recording. The statement signed by lawyer Beata Bosak-Kruczek mentions the name of Sejm spokesman Marek Kuchciński.
  3. Health minister Szumowski alleged to have bought £1m of PPE from ski instructor friend during pandemic. And givng away £65m grants to companies run by brother public anger has exploded after Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza reported that Szumowski bought masks with fake certificates from a skiing instructor who is friends with his businessman brother, Marcin. Poland’s Health Ministry reportedly spent five million zloty (£1m) on 120,000 FFP-2 type face masks and 20,000 surgical masks that were later found not to meet safety standards, Politico says. The company that sold the masks was registered on the 30 of March and won the govt. contract on the same day. Critics have also questioned Szumowski’s previous dealings in government. Polish news network tvn24 reports that while serving as deputy science minister in 2016-17, he gave 300 million zloty (£60m) in grants from Poland’s National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) to OncoArendi Therapeutics, a research company run by his brother. Another company in which Szumowski was a shareholder, Life Science Innovation (LSI), was reportedly given a 24 million zloty (£5m) NCBR grant just days after he took up the ministerial post.
  4. Same Health minister Szumowski bought 1.2 thousand ventilators for PLN 200 million from a company owned by an arms dealer, not a single device was delivered

What is all this about?
  • On 27th of September, Azerbaijan with direct involvement of Turkey and using mercenaries from Syria launched a devastating war against the de facto Nagorno Karabakh Republic in an attempt to resolve the lingering Karabakh conflict using extreme and remorseless violence despite the existing peace process while rejecting UN's appeal for a global ceasefire due to the pandemic.
  • Independent organisations have raised alarms of ethnic cleansing and a humanitarian catastrophe for the indigenous Armenian population of Nagorno Karabakh.
  • Azerbaijan has severely damaged 130 civilian settlements including the capital Stepanakert with aerial, drones, missiles, smerch, semi-ballistic and artillery means as well the use of cluster bombs against civilian settlements causing half of the Armenian civilians to be forced to leave and the remaining to live in underground shelters.
  • As of October 16, Azerbaijan's violence has resulted in: A total of 36 civilians have been killed - a little girl, 7 women and 28 men. A total of 115 people were wounded, of which 95 received serious injuries: 77 of them are male and 18 are female citizens. Severe damage inflicted upon civilians properties: 7800 private immovable properties, 720 private movable properties, 1310 infrastructure, public and industrial objects including bombing of a 19th century Armenian church. Over 700 Armenian military personnel and volunteers have also been killed, making the KIA per capita higher than the KIA of the Vietnam War.
Nagorno Karabakh Autonomous Oblast as was known during the USSR-era made several petitions to join Armenia culminating in an independence referendum.
  • The final status of Nagorno Karabakh is pending the UN-mandated OSCE settlement as also agreed to by Azerbaijan on the basis of the Helsinki Final Act of 1975 among other norms of international law.
  • The UN-mandated OSCE led by the US, France and Russia, and backed by the UN, EU, NATO and Council of Europe, among others, non-optionally applies the principle of self-determination to Nagorno Karabakh.
  • The European Parliament passed a resolution in 1988 supporting the unification of Nagorno Karabakh with the Armenia SSR.
  • The four existing UN Security Council resolutions call for cease of hostilities and mandate the conflict to be settled under the OSCE framework, with the latter determining the final status of Nagorno Karabakh. These resolutions followed the capture of surrounding territories around Nagorno Karabakh by the Nagorno Karabakh forces during the final months of the Karabakh War in 1993.
  • Same as above applies to the only existing non-binding UN General Assembly resolution which was rejected by the OSCE co-chairs (US, France and Russia) for attempting to bypass the UN-mandated OSCE framework to determine the final status of Nagorno Karabakh. The majority of UN members states abstained from voting in favour of said resolution.
Disclaimer: Official news is not independent news. Some sources of information are of unknown origin, such as Telegram channels often used to report events by users. Fog of war exists. Borders are fluid in 5th generation wars. There are independent journalists from reputable international media in Nagorno Karabakh reporting on events.

Buying & Shipping

1. What’s the best place to buy my anime figures from?
That’s going to depend a lot on what works for you, but most people around here buy them from Amiami, Big in Japan, Hobby Search, HobbyLink Japan, or Tokyo Otaku Mode. If none of those work for you for whatever reason, there’s a list of reputable retailers in the sidebar that you can check out at any time. Be extra careful when ordering figures from websites like Amazon or ebay, as there are a lot of bootlegs on those sites. Don’t be afraid to ask in our Bootleg Megathread if you’re unsure.
2. What differences are there between the shipping options I get from most Japanese shops?
Below is a rundown of the main shipping choices you’ll get at most retailers. Keep in mind that if an order is large enough you will be forced to use one of the more expensive options, as SAL shipments have lower size and weight restrictions.
  • Unregistered SAL: Sometimes referred to as uSAL, is usually the cheapest method. It does not come with any tracking or insurance. Usually takes up 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • Registered SAL: Sometimes referred to as rSAL, is insured for the declared value up to 6,000 yen. It comes with a tracking number and usually takes 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • EMS: This method of shipping is much faster than either SAL options, usually arriving within a week of shipment. EMS shipments are insured for the declared value up to 2,000,000 yen.
  • Airmail
  • E-packet
  • Surface: Shops don't offer this very often. It's an actual cargo ship and slow as a result.
  • DHL: Becoming more available as an alternative to EMS on AmiAmi and other sites. Can be less expensive than EMS and of comparable speed, but may be more reliant on the specific geographical area being shipped to. Offers their own tracking.
3. I placed two+ orders for figures at different times. Will my items be shipped together, or will I have to pay shipping twice?
Most shops will ask you to pay shipping on a per-order basis, but here are some that will allow combined shipping:
  • Amiami: You can combine orders here, as long as the orders ship in the same month. It doesn’t matter if the item is new or preowned. Any preorders that are set for that month can also be combined with other orders for that month. However, be aware that if the preorder gets delayed, Amiami will remove that item from that month’s shipment and place it on a new order. To combine orders on Amiami, use the “Combine Orders” feature under “My Account”.
  • Hobby Search: Hobby Search will let you combine orders that release in the same month, but you cannot combine in stock items with preorders. If you want to combine multiple preorders, or multiple in stock items, you can do so using the “Order Recombination” feature on your account page.
  • HobbyLink Japan: At HLJ, you have the option to send paid orders to their “Private Warehouse”, where you can store them for up to 2 months. When you’re ready to ship the items, you simply select which items to ship and HLJ will combine them into one shipment for you. To use this, just select the “Private Warehouse” option as shipping when you order.
  • GSC Web Shop: Here you’ll pay a flat 2,000 yen fee per order. It doesn’t matter how many items you put in your order, or how many different months the items release in. They will charge you 2,000 yen and ship all items as they release. The exception to this rule is their Wonder Festival exclusive items. Those can only be placed in the same order as other Wonder Festival items.
If you’re unsure about whether or not a shop we haven’t listed will combine your orders, please refer to their individual FAQ’s.
4. When will I get charged for my preorder?
Most Japanese shops charge you once the item is in stock and ready for shipment. When that happens, they will send you an email asking for payment. Some shops (mostly overseas ones), will allow you to pay for the item up front though, if you’d like. A few with that option are:
  • Big in Japan (Japanese store)
  • Tokyo Otaku Mode
  • Anime Island
  • Crunchyroll
Keep in mind that overseas stores will likely get the figure a few months after Japanese ones, so pay attention to the release date stated on the website you are buying from so as to avoid that confusion.
5. Should I expect to pay customs fees when importing figures?
That depends on where you live. Here’s a quick rundown:
  • Australia: 10% GST is now assessed up front.
  • Canada: Minimum declared value for charges is around CAD$20 for regular shipments, and CAD$60 for gifts (gifting something only seems to lower the declared value by about CAD$40, not deplete it completely). When using Amiami, try their Small Air Packet option. It comes with tracking, gets there in about the same time as EMS, and is better at avoiding customs.
  • Europe: Using EMS raises your chance of getting charged for customs. SAL can still avoid customs in some countries, but generally gets checked in the UK now if the items are above the threshold. Amiami offers a shipping service called “Small Air Packet” that is really good for avoiding customs when you are only shipping one or two figures. Small Air Packet usually takes about the same amount of time as EMS, and still comes with tracking. The minimum declared value for customs charges in the Europe is pretty low- around £15 (£36 for gifts) / €20.
  • Mexico: Minimum declared value for customs fees is USD$300 for shipments by post, and USD$50 for shipments by courier.
  • United States: A shipment has to have a declared value of USD$2,000 before customs starts hitting you with fees, so you most likely won’t have to worry about them at all.
6. The figure I want is an exclusive, how do I go about ordering one outside of Japan?
You have three options for this:
A. Big in Japan is known to stock exclusive figures and ship to other countries. Usually the price is higher because they build in their proxy fees, but it’s easier than worrying about using a forwarder or proxy service. If you live in the US, Crunchyroll, Right Stuf, and Tokyo Otaku Mode also get exclusives sometimes, but out of the states the shipping can get expensive.
B. Forwarding Services: A forwarder is someone who you ship an exclusive item to so that they can forward the package on to you, usually for a flat fee + shipping. When using a forwarder you still make the purchase yourself, and enter their address into the shipping field. When the box arrives at the forwarder they will then stick your address onto the package and send it on its way.
Some popular forwarders are:
Be sure to read each sites instructions on forwarding carefully!
C. Proxy Services: With a proxy, you tell them what the item you’re looking for is and they will purchase it in your stead. This is handy for when a company doesn’t accept foreign credit cards, or you’re having trouble navigating a Japanese website.
Some popular proxies are:
Again, be sure you thoroughly read through each sites proxy instructions.
7. I see a bunch of really cheap figures that ship from China on ebay. Are those okay to buy?
Generally, no. They’re most likely bootlegs. If you want a second opinion on that, feel free to ask in the Bootleg Megathread that’s always stickied at the top of the sub.
8. What’s a bootleg, and how can I avoid buying them?
A bootleg is a counterfeit figure often made using rejected molds of the official product. They are usually priced significantly lower than the genuine article, and in order to make their profit, bootleggers use lower quality materials and have less attention to detail- resulting in a substandard figure.
The Bootleg Megathread that I mentioned in question 7 is a great tool to avoid buying any bootlegs. It has a few tips and tricks to avoiding them to begin with, and a few more on how to spot them if you’re worried you might already own one.
9. Does anyone know when figure X is going to be released? How do I know if it was delayed?
My Figure Collection (sometimes referred to as MFC) does an excellent job of staying on top of information like release dates and delays. If you’re curious about an upcoming figures release date, check there first. This information can be found directly under the “Releases” section on a figure’s entry. If you only see a month and a year in that section, it means the release date has not yet been announced by the manufacturer, and there is still a chance the figure could be delayed.
If you make an account on MFC you can also subscribe to comments, changes, and pictures via a checkbox on the right hand side of a figure’s listing. Subscribing to any of these things will allow MFC to send you an email anytime the subscription in question updates. Subscribing to “changes” is a great way to keep up with release dates and delays, among other things.
10. The figure I want is long sold out at normal retailers! What’s the best place to pick it up in the aftermarket?
A list of reputable retailers can be found under the “Shops” section of the /AnimeFigures sidebar. They all sell legitimate products, and many of them also sell figures second hand. However, the most frequently suggested second hand sites are Mandarake and Amiami- who has a preowned section that they update every night save Sundays and Japanese holidays around 1PM JST and again around 6PM JST.
AmiAmi grades their pre-owned items on a letter scale. The general consensus from buyers is that their ratings are conservative, so unless the item and/or packaging is specifically indicated as having significant flaws, pre-owned items from them are usually in at least as good a condition as their rating suggests.
Note: When you search Mandarake, you’ll get the best results by using the Japanese characters for whatever you are searching. If you don’t know them, you can find them on MFC by clicking on any of the “details” in that figure’s listing.
11. Amiami has a figure I’m interested in labeled as “For sale in Japan only”. Does this mean I can’t order it without a proxy or forwarder?
No, you can still order it. Amiami’s English site has that warning on many items, and it’s mostly meant to inform you that this product was made for a Japanese market, and as such, will have Japanese speaking/writing in it- so don’t expect any instructions to be in English. If Amiami doesn’t want foreigners buying a certain product, they won’t even list it on their English site.

Displaying Your Figures

12. What display cases do you recommend?
If you live near an Ikea try out one of these:
*If you decided on a Detolf, you might find that there is a lot of wasted space. Here are a few tutorials on raising the shelves or and adding extra ones in.
If you don’t live near an Ikea, Amazon has a few display options, though they are more expensive. Also keep an eye on your local Craigslist (or your country’s equivalent) and stores near you that are closing up.
13. What lighting do you guys recommend?
Ikea’s Dioder LED strips are often suggested. They come in white or muti-colored.
Most hardware stores carry something similar though, if you don’t live by an Ikea. Just make sure that the lights don’t get too hot!
14. What are those clear plastic boxes that I see under everyone’s figures in their collection posts, and where can I get them?
Those are called risers. Most of us use standard acrylic risers like these. Some other, easy to find things that have been suggested are:
Check your local hobby store for the first 2 options, or your local hardware store if you want to make your own.
Another common suggestion is to visit The Container Store if you have one near you. They have a lot of things to choose from that can suit a variety of needs. Be sure to check out their standard acrylic risers, their Amac boxes, and the various display cases they sell (baseball cases, mini car cases. hockey puck cases, etc).
15. Should I keep my figures sealed?
That is, of course, up to you really, but here are a few things to keep in mind when debating this question:
  • Keeping it sealed can actually damage your figure. PVC figures usually have something called plasticizer in them, and that plasticizer needs to be able to breath. If a PVC figure isn’t exposed to oxygen, after a period of time the plasticizer starts to break down and form a sticky substance on the surface of the figure. Simply opening your figures and taking them out of the box prevents this from happening. If you happen to find plasticizer goo on one of your figures, Kahotan has a handy guide for dealing with it.
  • Unlike some other figure markets, keeping an anime figure sealed won’t raise its value by a whole lot. In fact, because of the plasticizer problem mentioned above, your figure could actually be in better condition if you open it versus keeping it sealed.

Finding the Right Figure(s) for You

16. There are so many figure companies! Who makes good figures?!
Obviously this is a very subjective question, but as a general starting point, here are a few well renowned figure companies:
  • Alter
  • Max Factory
  • Good Smile Company
  • Kotobukiya (usually hit or miss for people. Use your best judgement based off of the prototype)
  • Aquamarine
  • Flare
  • Stronger
17. I really love “series X / character X”- how can I check if any figures were ever made for it?
My Figure Collection can be your best friend here. Simply do a search on the name of the series or character using the search bar located at the top right of the screen, and all associated figures pop up!
Alternatively, if you’re looking at a figure’s MFC entry, most of the text under the “Details” section can be clicked on and used to run a search.
18. How can I commission a custom figure?
None of the major figure companies (Alter, Kotobukiya, Good Smile Company, etc.) will take a commission for a single figure. This thread has a few websites in it that you can check out, or you can look into garage kits. Some kit painters would be willing to resculpt, frankenstein together, or otherwise modify kits for the right price.
If you're looking for help completing a garage kit, /brushforhire may be useful.

Keeping Up with New Announcements

19. How can I keep up with figure news (announcements, updates, etc.)?
Most people use a MFC combined with any or all of the following news sites:
To use MFC for this I’ll quote question #9.
Most companies have one or more Twitter accounts. Some examples: Good Smile Company sales, Good Smile's USA branch, Max Factory, AmiAmi Hobby News.
20. Everyone’s excited about something called Wonfes….. what the heck is that?!
WonFes (short for Wonder Festival) is a biannual figure expo where many figure producers (both large and small) show off new sculpts and updates to figures already under way. Most companies save their most exciting announcements for WonFes, so we all look forward to the expo whenever it rolls around! Winter Wonder Festival is usually held in February, while Summer Wonder Festival is usually in July. The event has also spread to Shanghai, in the late spring.
21. One or two (or 15) figures were announced at WonFes that I’m really excited about! How can I keep track of their progress once the event is over?
MFC is always really quick about getting new WonFes announcements (or any others throughout the year, for that matter) listed in their database, so we suggest using that. To find a figure from the event you can search any number of things, including the name of the character or the name of the show. You can also use the tag search to search “WonderFestival 20xx_[season]” to see all items announced at that event.

Disclaimer: Official news is not independent news. Some sources of information are of unknown origin, such as Telegram channels often used to report events by users. Fog of war exists. Borders are fluid in 5th generation wars. There are independent journalists from reputable international media in Nagorno Karabakh reporting on events.

2020.10.22 00:45 Metalvayne7x Android game installing spy/malware impossible to delete WRECKS PHONE

My Android phone does not restart or factory reset following use/installation of a game called puzzle hockey by What Games. The screen flickers and is loaded with ads at all times ever since. Also all web browsers search in offline mode almost exclusively. Sometimes I can glitch the phone out enough after a "factory reset" to see old programs that should have been erased by the reset or old contact numbers. I even bought a new phone, but it seems to have been compromised by "low power Bluetooth" just by being in vicinity of the old phone. Same thing, nefarious uninstallable apps that install from unknown sources silently in the background while also using draw over apps to hide the activity. It seems like a maze of launchers on my Android preventing any return to normal functionality. What do I do????
Here's an excerpt from the company I believe that started the problems.

2020.10.21 19:16 whiskyriot Office365 Basic Authentication Disaster

I just blocked basic authentication for Exchange Online as Microsoft has been pushing customers to do, and it was a disaster. Here's the story:
Recently our company saw a lot of brute-force/password spray attempts against many of our Office 365 mailboxes. We were surprised to see that, even though we had IMAP and POP disabled at the mailbox level (via the set-casmailbox cmdlet) AND blocked legacy "Other clients" with a Conditional Access policy AND enforced MFA for all apps with a Conditional Access policy, these attacks were still effective against first-factor authentication (username/password).
We then learned that you can only stop attacks before the first-factor authentication by enabling an Authentication Policy as described here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/clients-and-mobile-in-exchange-online/disable-basic-authentication-in-exchange-online
So I set out to identify clients using legacy authentication protocols by pulling a report of all sign-ins using the Azure AD Sign-ins report, filtering to all connections using any of the 13 Client Apps listed as "Legacy Authentication Clients" and filtering on Status=Success for the previous 90 days.
Out of our thousands of users (all of which are on Office 2016 or later, BTW), I found only 13 accounts that had hits using IMAP, SMTP, Basic Powershell, Exchange Web Services or Autodiscover. I made some special Authentication Policies for these, allowing the respective services they showed in the logs. Then I made a new "Block Basic Auth" policy which has no allowed exceptions and set it as the default policy for the org.
I also set all the CASMailboxPlans to disable IMAP, POP and ActiveSync by default for all new mailboxes:
Get-CASMailboxPlan set-CASMailboxPlan -ImapEnabled $false -PopEnabled $false -ActiveSyncEnabled $false
And finally changed all existing mailboxes to disable POP, IMAP and EWS, then enabled those services for my handful of accounts that still showed as using it in the Sign-in logs:
get-casmailbox -resultsize unlimited set-casmailbox -PopEnabled $false -ImapEnabled $false -EwsEnabled $false
set-casmailbox -identity "REDACTED" -ImapEnabled $true set-casmailbox -identity "REDACTED" -EwsEnabled $true
... set-casmailbox -identity "REDACTED" -ImapEnabled $true

And just in case, I ran the command suggested by Microsoft to speed up Authentication Policy deployment time on a portion of the population:
Set-User -Identity  -STSRefreshTokensValidFrom $([System.DateTime]::UtcNow)
Despite monitoring the Sign-in logs like a hawk four almost 10 hours and not seeing any related failures, doing all of this broke lots of things:
Ultimately to restore service we had to:
  1. Allow ActiveSync, EWS and Autodiscover on our "Block Basic Auth" authentication policy
  2. Re-enable EWS at the CASMailbox level
What I don't understand is:
  1. Why did we see some, but not all of these legacy authentication connections in the Azure AD Sign-in logs, either before the change as successful events, or after the change as failures?
  2. Why are these basic protocols, particularly EWS and Autodiscover, still in use by our very modern Outlook clients (including the latest Microsoft 365 Subscription version of Outlook)?
We have a case open with MS, but its not making very good progress yet. I post this as an open warning to others endeavoring on this important task, as well as a request for help.

2020.10.21 18:55 Z3R0gravitas Silver is far harder than high gold (old main vs newer alt, all roles, solo Q, EU) - placements comparison graphic and matchmaker trap hypothesis

Graphic summary of this season's placements for my old main, long stuck in silver (ZeroGravitas#2272), verses my newer alt in high gold (Z3R0gravitas#2420). 27% verses 60% win rate, respectively (across the 15 matches on each). Seems backwards...
This is just a snippet of evidence of a larger picture, where my silver comp games have been consistently harder and less winnable than games on my alt, for a long time. [Edit: note, I also placed my alt for the first time in season 20, then played an additional 5 games per role, for a total of 45 matches on that account to date.]
Despite my alt being 402 to 873 SR higher, this season, I felt the games were more fair and easier, overall. I got more wins despite lower stats, sometimes (dps role, particularly). My occasional mistakes having a clear impact without being totally devastating.
The standard basic advice from this sub (and elsewhere) actually being fully relevant, on my alt. E.g. stay alive, get value, synergise and counter pick, analyse your mistakes, etc. (I've watched a very large amount of educational videos and streams in the last few years too, of course.)
Whereas my main has hopeless "gg go next" for about 2/3 matches. I examine all my losses in the replay viewer (a fantastic tool) to see what big mistakes I've made and what was happening overall. They are predominantly a clear case of team diff and/or enemy dps 'smurf' carry. (I'm fairly confident at recognising high plat+ rank snipeDoom, etc, play.)
I'll explain more about my personal experiences further down. First I'm going to run through what I've been able to find out about the OW competitive matchmaker, because I think this might explain the main reason for my situation while also being relevant for many other players. But not most - this sub definitely provides a whole lot of useful education info that clearly helps a lot of players. Good job! But many here can be a little too dogmatic in assuming that only personal failings can ever be a major issue preventing rank climb. I want to question that assumption, and maybe some others (with evidence).

MMR-SR disparity rank trap hypothesis:

[Edit: please check out Kaawumba's more detailed explaination of season 24 matchmaking and SR adjustments, with many more relevant source links, on the official forums.]
From what the devs are prepared to tell us, I quoted and summarised the bits I thought important at the end of this exchange, on a thread in this sub a week ago. So I'll only link the sources here. Only points 1 to 5 (and maybe 6) are fully relevant to this theory, but I've included more, because I'm verbose...:
What we know for sure about the competitive matchmaker:
  1. Jeff and the devs have emphasised that it primarily uses hidden MMR to match players together. [A 2016, B 2016]
  2. MMR is not equal to SR. It's a somewhat complex 'player quality' metric, but it maps skill on a -3 to +3 scale (for the majority of players). [C 2019]
  3. It tries its best to make every match's predicted outcome as close to 50/50 odds as possible. The cut-off for making a match is 40/60 percentage odds. More SR is given for a win overcoming bad odds. [D 2018]
  4. We all see that the average SR of each team is always usually close. These will also generally be fairly close to your personal SR, if you are solo queuing. (This is more commonly divergent for players at the rarefied extremes of the rankings, with fewer peers to match with.) [Edit: But I now fully believe the devs when they say they don't use this for matchmaking, after a detailed look at some SR adjustments following decay. Credit u/Preloa.]
  5. MMR [can sometimes] change more rapidly than SR usually can. And "will fluxate more rapidly the less frequently you play". Faster for band new players. [E 2020] (I've heard claims MMR used to be averaged across player stats for all time, but I'm dubious that this was ever so, or is still the case, if it ever was.)
  6. It considers your MMR relative to the enemy team's average MMR ("strength of schedule"). [E 2020] I think this means it will award less SR gain for winning matches below your rank (I've not seen this explicitly stated). Or rather, below your hidden MMR, however good it secretly thinks you are.
  7. First time comp placements have accelerated SR change, from a starting point of mid-gold. Accelerated SR change continues for the next 5 (?) games after first placements (at roughly 5 times the normal amount, ~125 instead of ~25).
  8. There's a minor performance based SR contribution (plat and below), of course. [E 2020] So hard carry players will gain a little more where they greatly outperformed the average for players on their chosen character(s), in matches around that rank.
  9. Grouping is considered advantageous, so it always tries to match same sized groups, with similar skill distribution, where possible. [D 2018] I think I've heard it hinted/admitted that other player quality factors might be used to counter-balance unequal group sizes? Please link me if you have a source.
  10. At the high end of the ladder, wins gain less SR the closer one gets to 5000 SR. Grouping is more limited and between season placement results are currently capped at 3900SR.
  11. Bonus SR gain for win streaks was essentially removed in season 11 [F 2018]. It may still exist, within mid-ranks, with raised requirement and lower rewards, so is not very relevant.
  12. Blizzard never analyse audio or text comms, despite their patent describing such. [G 2020]
  13. In season 3, the devs included an SR win/loss adjustment factor that often looked extreme and arbitrary (win 10 SR, lose 40 for no obvious reason). It was there specifically to realign the 'normal' curve of player SR distribution back towards gold. They apparently cocked up the maths at the start of season 2, making the range of SRs too compact and too high up towards plat. [H 2016]It seems to me that this one instance of arbitrary shifting of SRs may have created an ongoing misunderstanding, e.g. via this post. I doubt that, in general, SR is systematically shifted towards a player's hidden MMR with a biasing factor, like that. Not beyond fixing that specific issue, 4 years ago. (I've heard that the distribution's currently centred near 2350 as an average, rather than exactly mid-gold...?)
TL;DR - Crux of the trap theory: because the competitive matchmaker is simultaneously solving to balance teams by visible SR *and* hidden MMR, to create a predicted 50/50 odds outcome, it will have to counterbalance higher MMR players on one team with higher MMR players on the other team. Or lower MMR players on the same team. I believe MMR is able to change at a much faster rate than SR, e.g. to balance QP within a few games.
[Edit: I no longer think SR is used for matchmaking. Nor that MMR could possibly be shared between QP and comp. But I still suspect QP MMR could be a secondary consideration for team balancing of smurfs, etc.]
I think it's set up this way because the devs had to accept smurfing as a reality. (BTW, I think 'smurfing' is mostly account sharing in lower ranks.) There are a substantial number of players who deliberately avoid being moving fully towards an SR corresponding to their true player skill. These players would *entirely* dominate the outcome of matches if the system didn't try to counter-balance them. So it makes sense that any player performing a little better (or worst) should be able to tip the balance of a match, and thus climb (or fall). Even if they are not the carry.
The problem (I think) is that this could also create a trap, biasing matchmaking against players who are legitimately under-ranked. With MMR significantly above their SR. (Though not massively so - I'm only claiming ~500SR, due to my known limitations.)
This trap definitely isn't the case most of the time, so when is it relevant?:
Sub-hyppothesis: the same MMR metric is shared between QP and competitive matchmakers (on a per-role basis). [Edit: I now doubt this is plausible. See end note.]
I feel my comp matchmaking, on my main, has been more manageable when I've used my alt account for all my quickplay, instead. Conversely, it was particularly hard this season, after playing a fair bit socially with my game friends, who average around diamond/plat. But this is harder for me to be absolutely certain about, because my capabilities do vary a little, and the times I play at vary a lot, too.
Although, I see other players with under-ranked accounts talking about systematic bias against ranking up. Like this masters player, here yesterday, reporting a gold account with 67% win-rate failing to gain SR. I think their case may be more about MMR being a *lot* higher than rank, so it's expecting that they carry every game (point 6, above).
If the comp matchmaker were using a separate MMR stat, this would be far more limited to how far out of whack it could get. It could only project your skill based on performance differentials verses players of low skill. A top 2% player in silver is still just exceptionally good for silver; it can't say if they below in plat, diamond, higher. For accounts only playing comp (like streamers doing 'bronze to GM'), it con only go on comp performance. But I've not seen devs hint at any kind of MMR duality anywhere, so I expect it's shared (fitting with my experience, too). I'm keeping in mind that much referenced talk about the MMR system comes from back before competitive was first introduced [e.g. 2016].
Note that the scale of your MMR-SR disparity (how under-ranked you are) would not necessarily correlate with the scale of smurf skill you will be balanced against. A super-smurf (say, MMR 3 ranks above SR) on one team, would often be counter-balanced by multiple under-ranked players on the other side (say, 3 who are 1 rank out), so the total MMRs sum up. If something like this happens, then moderately under-ranked players could expect to hit super-smurf enemies a lot more than players who's SR is close to their MMR. I feel I've been seeing high plat and above skill enemy DPS players in ~1/3 of my matches (in addition to major imbalance in a further 1/3).
Alternative/complementary hypothesis: high silver truly has higher skilled players than high gold. But then they'd need to be trapped there, by this or other factors. Or maybe 'skill' is too one dimensional; they may be (for example) better mechanically while much worst overall, due to entrenched misunderstandings. I think there's some truth here, but it's not most significant.

Back to my situation and personal experiences:

Quick biography - I'm 37 and studied degrees in physics, then systems engineering. Since then I've been chronically ill with ME/CFS, and so have spent years in various game communities exploring and explaining counter-intuitive technical aspects. Hence I find this topic academically, as well as personally, interesting...
Anyway, I made my alt account at the end of last year, after being fed up of being stuck in silver (or below) for years. I placed my main season 1, when I was only playing socially, very casual. I was sure that I was now a gold level player, maybe a little higher on my main roles - Moira/main tank (from filling for years). I could see that, for one source, from looking at very many profiles of the players I matched against while solo queueing in quickplay (getting numerous plats and even some diamonds at various points). Yes, that's difficult to assess, with only 1/6 profiles visible, or so (and there might be bias towards higher ranks having more visible?).
But placing my alt totally vindicated me, to my satisfaction, at least. The matches on it were a breath of fresh air. Of course there was variability with some unfortunate match-ups. But it's a different order of magnitude, with most games more balanced than any on my silver main. I think people don't appreciate the scale difference of the issue, when trapped players complain of things that they also see, just to a much lesser extent.
There's definitely an 'ELO hell' aspect, for me, too - I have strong comms and team play and relatively weaker, slower mechanics. So higher ranks boost my contributions a little more, too (e.g. flankers I call out sometimes get dealt with!). My main limitation is slow visual information processing - I'm dyslexic with a reading speed half what it should be. I just can not read the kill feed while engaged in a fight and it takes me a little longer to see what's going on generally, especially in more chaotic situations. With ADHD-PI (and a little 'brain fog' from ME/CFS), my working memory can be weaker, so struggling to keep track what's behind me, too, when under pressure...
But I'm certain these deficits aren't the core issue with my main account's rank, because:
Note that all my matches have been solo queue, spread across many different days. Various times of day, due to my broken 26 hour long circadian rhythm with my ME/CFS (chronic fatigue). Avoiding peak times for kids (because their higher mechanics and lower team play may be unfavourable for me). Always warming up in Mystery Heroes and QP first, never playing comp unless I'm functioning well enough. Definitely never play drunk or tilted, stopping after 2 bad losses. Using the same, light, informative, positive comms (where there's anyone at all to talk to). No toxicity or ordering others about. I even tried one season (last year) of staying out of comms altogether, to be sure I wasn't distracting teammates (particularly with the EU language barrier). I still slowly dropped.
The only times I've consistently climbed have been:
Anyway. Please note that I'm not really looking for tips on playing better, currently. I've not included any replay codes, partly because I don't currently have any (after the last patch wiped them). Also, it would be near impossible to *prove* that my silver games are unfairly balanced. That would require you looking at a lot of games, to build up a full picture of the situation. Or that my play deserves to let me climb; I know I make plenty of mistakes, as everyone does. Because of my biological limitations I'm never climbing myself up as high as diamond, I'm pretty sure the pace and precision for that is well beyond me.

Edit 2020-10-24: as noted above, after comment discussion about decay, plus finding and reading more of this fantastic forum post, I no longer think SR is used for matchmaking. Nor that MMR could possibly be shared between QP and comp. But I still suspect QP MMR could be a secondary consideration for team balancing of smurfs, etc. Or there is some other secret analysis of play within comp, alone, to balance this kind of thing.

Welcome back to the fifty-fourth edition of /neoliberal elects the American presidents!
This will be a fairly consistent weekly thing - every week, a new election, until we run out.
I highly encourage you - at least in terms of the vote you cast - to try to think from the perspective of the year the election was held, without knowing the future or how the next administration would go. I'm not going to be trying to enforce that, but feel free to remind fellow commenters of this distinction.
If you're really feeling hardcore, feel free to even speak in the present tense as if the election is truly upcoming!
Whether third and fourth candidates are considered "major" enough to include in the strawpoll will be largely at my discretion and depend on things like whether they were actually intending to run for President, and whether they wound up actually pulling in a meaningful amount of the popular vote and even electoral votes. I may also invoke special rules in how the results will be interpreted in certain elections to better approximate historical reality.
While I will always give some brief background info to spur the discussion, please don't hesitate to bring your own research and knowledge into the mix! There's no way I'll cover everything!
John McCain v Barack Obama, 2008
Profiles
  • John McCain is the 72-year-old Republican candidate and a US Senator from Arizona. His running mate is Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin.
  • Barack Obama is the 47-year-old Democratic candidate and a US Senator from Illinois. His running mate is US Senator from Delaware Joe Biden.
Issues and Background
  • The United States and other countries are in the midst of what many are describing as the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. The crisis was largely triggered by a collapse in home prices, which in turn caused securities tied directly or indirectly to real estate to plummet in value. In September, major investment bank Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy. A day later, the Federal Reserve bailed out and essentially took control of insurance giant AIG. Credit markets were on the brink of meltdown. In early October, Congress passed the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act, which created an enormous government program to purchase "toxic assets" from banks and significantly increased the amount of insurance provided by the FDIC. Both McCain and Obama supported this rescue plan. Liquidity appears to have been restored, but the economic situation is still otherwise dire.
    • Senator Obama has described the current crisis as a "final verdict on eight years of failed economic policies promoted by George Bush, supported by Senator McCain, a theory that basically says that we can shred regulations and consumer protections and give more and more to the most, and somehow prosperity will trickle down." Obama has spoken of the importance of oversight over the TARP $700 billion, of the possibility of getting that money back, of making sure none of that money is going to executive pay or executive severance packages, and of following up the package with help for homeowners.
    • Senator McCain has said that what distinguishes him from Senator Obama on how he will lead the country out of the economic crisis is his commitment to get government spending under control. McCain has proposed a one-year spending freeze on "non-defense, non-veterans discretionary spending." McCain has criticized Senator Obama for supporting "pork-barrel spending" in the past.
  • The US occupation of Iraq continues. Last year, the Bush Administration oversaw a troop surge, and the conventional wisdom is that the situation has generally improved as a result. There are some indications that the security situation is improving and that the training of the new Iraqi military is working. That said, pressure on the US to withdraw has increased, as the Iraqi government has sought a withdrawal timetable and the US coalition partners have begun their own withdraw. Security responsibility for several provinces has already been transferred from US forces to Iraqi forces. However, earlier this year, General David Petraeus called for the delaying of troop withdrawals.
    • Both candidates accuse the other of failures of judgement. Senator Obama has criticized McCain sharply for supporting invading Iraq in the first place, while Senator McCain has criticized Obama for not supporting the 2007 surge. On the latter point, in January 2007 Senator Obama's stance was:
The need to bring this war to an end is here. That is why today I am introducing the Iraq War De-escalation Act of 2007. This plan would not only place a cap on the number of troops in Iraq and stop the escalation: more importantly, it would begin a phased redeployment of United States forced with the goal of removing all United States combat forces from Iraq by March 31, 2008.
    • Early this year, Democrats seized on a statement from Senator McCain in which he indicated that he would be comfortable with an American presence in Iraq for "maybe 100" years. He has stood by the comments, saying he was referring to a presence comparable to what the US has had in South Korea, Germany, and Japan.
    • Under the Obama plan for Iraq, a phased withdrawal of most troops would begin which would likely remove the US troop presence by summer of 2010. A residual force would remain "to conduct targeted counter-terrorism missions against al Qaeda in Iraq and to protect American diplomatic and civilian personnel."
    • Under the McCain plan for Iraq, the US would not leave Iraq "before Al Qaeda in Iraq is defeated and before a competent, trained, and capable Iraqi security force is in place and operating effectively."
  • Sarah Palin has received a significant amount of both positive and negative attention relative to most VP nominees. Supporters praise her history as a reformer, her advocacy for families with special needs children, and her ability to energize parts of the Republican base. However, critics have raised questions about her knowledge of policy and her readiness to be President if it became necessary. Some in the media have expressed frustration at their limited access to Governor Palin. This scrutiny increased following a poorly received interview with Katie Couric which included the following exchanges:
COURIC: You've cited Alaska's proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that?
PALIN: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land boundary that we have with Canada ... We have trade missions back and forth. We -- we do -- it's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America, where -- where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to -- to our state.
    ...
COURIC: What other Supreme Court decisions do you disagree with?
PALIN: Well, let’s see. There’s, of course in the great history of America there have been rulings, that’s never going to be absolute consensus by every American. And there are those issues, again, like Roe v. Wade, where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there. So you know, going through the history of America, there would be others but …
COURIC: Can you think of any?
PALIN: Well, I could think of … any again, that could be best dealt with on a more local level. Maybe I would take issue with. But, you know, as mayor, and then as governor and even as a vice president, if I’m so privileged to serve, wouldn’t be in a position of changing those things but in supporting the law of the land as it reads today.
    ...
COURIC: And when it comes to establishing your worldview, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this to stay informed and to understand the world?
PALIN: I’ve read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media.
    COURIC: What, specifically?
PALIN: Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years.
COURIC: Can you name a few?
PALIN: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news, too. Alaska isn’t a foreign country, where it’s kind of suggested, “Wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?”
  • Health care reform has come up frequently on the campaign trail. Both candidates recognize a need to increase coverage and lower costs.
    • The Obama plan includes requiring health insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions, a tax credit to incentivize small businesses to provide health coverage, requirements on large employers to provide health coverage or otherwise contribute financially to their employee's health care, and "a National Health Insurance Exchange with a range of private insurance options as well as a new public plan based on benefits available to members of Congress."
    • The McCain plan is to offer "a direct refundable tax credit ... of $2,500 for individuals and $5,000 for families to offset the cost of insurance" and promote health savings accounts. McCain also seeks to make it easier to purchase health insurance across state lines.
  • Attention has also been given to the candidate's differing tax plans.
    • The Obama tax plan is to cut taxes for the middle class further than the Bush tax cuts did, while increasing taxes on the wealthiest 2% of Americans back to levels as they were in the 1990s. Senator Obama also seeks to implement a universal 10% mortgage interest tax credit, the elimination of income taxes for seniors making less than $50,000 a year, and an expansion of the EITC.
    • The McCain tax plan is to preserve all of the Bush tax cuts, phase out the Alternative Minimum Tax, cut the corporate tax rate to 25%, and establish a large R&D tax credit. Senator McCain also pledges to keep the Internet free of taxes.
    • In October at a campaign stop, Senator Obama was confronted by Joe Wurzelbacher, who has since become known colloquially as "Joe the Plumber", with concerns that he would be taxed more if Senator Obama were to become President. More recently, Wurzelbacher has made joint appearances with John McCain on the campaign trail. The McCain campaign has in particular seized on Obama's comment to Joe that "I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody."
  • McCain, currently 72, would be the oldest first-term President if elected. McCain gave reporters an opportunity to review his full medical records, which showed that he is generally in good health and has relatively low risk of heart disease despite slightly elevated cholesterol and past issues with skin cancer.
  • If elected, Senator Obama would be the first African-American President of the United States. Obama was born in Hawaii, the son of a Kenyan economist and an anthropologist from Kansas. While many find the possibility of the first African-American President inspiring, particularly when combined with the optimistic rhetoric of Senator Obama's campaign, his identity has also been related to unique challenges for him during the campaign. Members of his own party during the primary implied that his success in the race was mainly due to his race. Former VP nominee Geraldine Ferraro said:
If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.
Senator Biden, now Obama's running mate, said:
I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man.
In addition, Senator Obama has faced false rumors that he was born in Kenya and that he is not Christian. Some argue that the spread of these rumors is motivated partially or entirely by racism.
  • Republicans have argued that Senator Obama is connected to problematic persons and organizations.
    • Roughly 40 years ago, now-professor Bill Ayers was a leading member of the militant Weather Underground Organization, which conducted a bombing campaign of targeting government buildings and financial institutions. Ayers first met Barack Obama through a non-profit reform project's board of directors, and later hosted a small informal event where a departing State Senator introduced Obama as her chosen successor. Through each of their active involvements in Chicago events and initiatives, they would serve on a couple of the same boards and panels in the years afterwards. There is virtually no evidence to support some Republican claims that Ayers was some sort of political adviser to Obama, who has referred to Ayers as "somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8."
    • Senator Obama's pastor, Jeremiah Wright, has been the subject of controversy related to several sermon excerpts. The excerpts include claims that the government lied about its advance knowledge of Pearl Harbor, that the government lied about "inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color," and his comment that "America's chickens are coming home to roost," interpreted by some to be referring to the 9/11 attacks given the date of the sermon. President Obama addressed the issue in a broader speech on race in March of this year. Senator Obama stated:
I have already condemned, in unequivocal terms, the statements of Reverend Wright that have caused such controversy. For some, nagging questions remain. Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes. Did I strongly disagree with many of his political views? Absolutely—just as I'm sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests, or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed.
      ...
I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother—a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe. These people are a part of me. And they are a part of America, this country that I love.
    • Pro-labor NGO ACORN has been accused by Republicans of orchestrating voter fraud, though further investigation has revealed this claim to be overstated at best. ACORN has hired people in the past to assist in voter registration, and sometimes these workers have come up with phony registrations - however, this issue seems to be motivated by laziness of individual workers rather than an attempt to conduct voter fraud. Obama served as a local counsel for ACORN in the 90s, and was endorsed by the ACORN political action committee during the primary. The Obama campaign also hired an ACORN affiliate for get-out-the-vote efforts during the primary.
  • Representative John Lewis, a civil rights icon, has received blowback for comments he made regarding the tone of the McCain/Palin campaign. Lewis accused the campaign of "sowing the seeds of hatred and division," and brought up the example of George Wallace never throwing a bomb or firing a gun but creating "the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans." McCain called the comments "hurtful" and called on Senator Obama to repudiate the comments. The Obama campaign has said that the comparison made by Rep. Lewis was inappropriate.
  • Senator McCain describes himself as a "free trader" and has criticized Senator Obama for opposing some free trade agreements. The Obama team has pledged to "use trade agreements to spread good labor and environmental standards around the world and stand firm against agreements like the Central American Free Trade Agreement that fail to live up to those important benchmarks." Senator Obama has also pledged to "fix" NAFTA.
Debate Excerpts
First Presidential Debate (full transcript)
(1) Obama on government spending:
John, it's been your president who you said you agreed with 90 percent of the time who presided over this increase in spending. This orgy of spending and enormous deficits you voted for almost all of his budgets. So to stand here and after eight years and say that you're going to lead on controlling spending and, you know, balancing our tax cuts so that they help middle class families when over the last eight years that hasn't happened I think just is, you know, kind of hard to swallow.
(2) McCain on Iraq:
I think the lessons of Iraq are very clear that you cannot have a failed strategy that will then cause you to nearly lose a conflict. Our initial military success, we went in to Baghdad and everybody celebrated. And then the war was very badly mishandled. I went to Iraq in 2003 and came back and said, we've got to change this strategy. This strategy requires additional troops, it requires a fundamental change in strategy and I fought for it. And finally, we came up with a great general and a strategy that has succeeded.
(3) Obama on meeting foreign adversaries "without precondition":
I reserve the right, as president of the United States to meet with anybody at a time and place of my choosing if I think it's going to keep America safe ... Now, understand what this means "without preconditions." It doesn't mean that you invite them over for tea one day. What it means is that we don't do what we've been doing, which is to say, "Until you agree to do exactly what we say, we won't have direct contacts with you."
(4) McCain on Iran:
My reading of the threat from Iran is that if Iran acquires nuclear weapons, it is an existential threat to the State of Israel and to other countries in the region because the other countries in the region will feel compelling requirement to acquire nuclear weapons as well.
Now we cannot have a second Holocaust. Let's just make that very clear. What I have proposed for a long time, and I've had conversation with foreign leaders about forming a league of democracies, let's be clear and let's have some straight talk. The Russians are preventing significant action in the United Nations Security Council.
Vice-Presidential Debate (full transcript)
(1) Biden on what his administration would look like if a President Obama were to die in office:
God forbid that would ever happen, it would be a national tragedy of historic proportions if it were to happen.
But if it did, I would carry out Barack Obama's policy, his policies of reinstating the middle class, making sure they get a fair break, making sure they have access to affordable health insurance, making sure they get serious tax breaks, making sure we can help their children get to college, making sure there is an energy policy that leads us in the direction of not only toward independence and clean environment but an energy policy that creates 5 million new jobs, a foreign policy that ends this war in Iraq, a foreign policy that goes after the one mission the American public gave the president after 9/11, to get and capture or kill bin Laden and to eliminate al Qaeda. A policy that would in fact engage our allies in making sure that we knew we were acting on the same page and not dictating.
(2) Palin on what her administration would look like if a President McCain were to die in office:
And heaven forbid, yes, that would ever happen, no matter how this ends up, that that would ever happen with either party.
As for disagreeing with John McCain and how our administration would work, what do you expect? A team of mavericks, of course we're not going to agree on 100 percent of everything. As we discuss ANWR there, at least we can agree to disagree on that one. I will keep pushing him on ANWR. I have so appreciated he has never asked me to check my opinions at the door and he wants a deliberative debate and healthy debate so we can make good policy.
What I would do also, if that were to ever happen, though, is to continue the good work he is so committed to of putting government back on the side of the people and get rid of the greed and corruption on Wall Street and in Washington.
Second Presidential Debate (Town Hall) (full transcript)
(1) McCain on nuclear energy:
But we kept the debate going, and we kept this issue to -- to posing to Americans the danger that climate change opposes. Now, how -- what's -- what's the best way of fixing it? Nuclear power. Senator Obama says that it has to be safe or disposable or something like that. Look, I -- I was on Navy ships that had nuclear power plants. Nuclear power is safe, and it's clean, and it creates hundreds of thousands of jobs.
(2) Obama on McCain's criticism that he's being reckless on foreign policy:
Senator McCain, this is the guy who sang, "Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran," who called for the annihilation of North Korea. That I don't think is an example of "speaking softly." This is the person who, after we had -- we hadn't even finished Afghanistan, where he said, "Next up, Baghdad."
(3) McCain on Russia:
I said before, watch Ukraine. Ukraine, right now, is in the sights of Vladimir Putin, those that want to reassemble the old Soviet Union. We've got to show moral support for Georgia. We've got to show moral support for Ukraine. We've got to advocate for their membership in NATO. We have to make the Russians understand that there are penalties for these this kind of behavior, this kind of naked aggression into Georgia, a tiny country and a tiny democracy.
(4) Obama on spending priorities:
You know, you may have seen your health care premiums go up. We've got to reform health care to help you and your budget. We are going to have to deal with energy because we can't keep on borrowing from the Chinese and sending money to Saudi Arabia. We are mortgaging our children's future. We've got to have a different energy plan. We've got to invest in college affordability. So we're going to have to make some investments, but we've also got to make spending cuts. And what I've proposed, you'll hear Senator McCain say, well, he's proposing a whole bunch of new spending, but actually I'm cutting more than I'm spending so that it will be a net spending cut.
Third Presidential Debate (full transcript)
(1) McCain on Obama's economic plans:
I don't think there's any doubt that Sen. Obama wants to restrict trade and he wants to raise taxes. And the last president of the United States that tried that was Herbert Hoover, and we went from a deep recession into a depression.
(2) Obama on comments by Congressman Lewis:
I mean, look, if we want to talk about Congressman Lewis, who is an American hero, he, unprompted by my campaign, without my campaign's awareness, made a statement that he was troubled with what he was hearing at some of the rallies that your running mate was holding, in which all the Republican reports indicated were shouting, when my name came up, things like "terrorist" and "kill him," and that your running mate didn't mention, didn't stop, didn't say "Hold on a second, that's kind of out of line."
(3) McCain on Obama's connections:
I don't care about an old washed-up terrorist [Bill Ayers]. But as Sen. Clinton said in her debates with you, we need to know the full extent of that relationship.
We need to know the full extent of Sen. Obama's relationship with ACORN, who is now on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy. The same front outfit organization that your campaign gave $832,000 for "lighting and site selection." So all of these things need to be examined, of course.
(4) Obama on who he associates with:
Let me tell you who I associate with. On economic policy, I associate with Warren Buffett and former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker. If I'm interested in figuring out my foreign policy, I associate myself with my running mate, Joe Biden or with Dick Lugar, the Republican ranking member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, or General Jim Jones, the former supreme allied commander of NATO.
Those are the people, Democrats and Republicans, who have shaped my ideas and who will be surrounding me in the White House. And I think the fact that this has become such an important part of your campaign, Sen. McCain, says more about your campaign than it says about me.
